The Properties of Plant Fiber and Polyester Blended Nonwoven Fabrics (식물성 섬유와 폴리에스테르 섬유의 혼합 부직포 제조 및 특성 -어저귀, 칡섬유를 중심으로-)

  • Nonwoven fabrics have been widely used in various fields that include household, industrial, agricultural, medical goods, especially in the automobile industry. In this study, eco-friendly fiber materials were developed and investigated as a substitute material for polyester fibers in nonwovens. To make plant fiber bundles, stems of Indian mallow (IM), and Kuzu vine (KV) were retted; in addition, the non-cellulose component was partially removed. Plant fiber bundles and polyester fibers (P) were blended and needle punched to produce nonwovens. Five kinds of nonwovens were manufactured: P100 (Polyester 100%), IM10 (IM 10% and Polyester 90%), IM20 (IM 20% and Polyester 80%), KV10 (KV 10% and Polyester 90%), and KV20 (KV 20% and Polyester 80%). The color values, surface appearance, tensile strength, elongation, tear strength, abrasion strength, flexstiffness, moisture regain, water or oil absorbency, and static electricity of manufactured nonwovens are investigated. As the blended ratios of IM or KV increased, the brightness of nonwovens decreased compared to that of polyester 100%. Tensile strength, tear strength, abrasion strength, and flexstiffness of IM10 as well as KV10 were higher than those of P100, IM20, and KV20, resulting from the influence of the structure and properties of nonwoven fibers. Moisture regain and water or oil absorbency increased, while static electricity decreased in proportion to the amount of plant fibers. IM or KV and polyester blended nonwovens showed improved properties over P100 that could be substituted for P100 as a novel material for textiles.

Study of the Clothing Behavior and Fiber Preferences of Multicultural Families (다문화 가정의 의복 실태와 섬유 선호도에 관한 연구)

  • The purpose of this study was to survey the clothing behavior, care and the fiber preferences of multi-cultural families living in Korea. The data was collected using questionnaire surveys based on pre-tests, and a main survey conducted in Seoul, Gyeonggi Province and Chungcheong Province. The 258 participants came from 151 multi-cultural families and 107 Korean families. The results of this study were as follows: First, Filipinos owned more clothes than the Chinese and bought clothes more frequently. The Filipinos spent 10,000~30,000 Korean won on all types of clothing. Each time, the Chinese spent more money when purchasing jackets. Second, when health was the greatest concern for underclothes, they chose cotton fiber as their preferred fiber. When beauty was of greatest concern for blouses they chose cotton. When beauty was of greatest concern for skirts and jackets they chose natural fibers such as silk, wool or linen. Filipinos preferred synthetic fibers because they are easy to care for, and the Chinese preferred natural fibers due to their beauty, especially for pants. Third, multi-cultural families laundered at home using only a washing machine. All fibers were laundered together into the washer without any sorting. This study can contribute to providing basic data for an understanding of the clothing behavior and laundry styles of multi-cultural families which may be useful data in the apparel market in Korea given the relative and direct changes relevant to various clothing cultures.

New-silver women's fiber and material property preferences (뉴실버 여성의 선호 섬유와 재질감에 대한 연구)

  • The purpose of this study was to examine new-silver women's fiber and material property preferences and purchasing behaviors. The survey subjects were 115 new-silver women ranging in age from 50 to 60 years old. This study utilized a questionnaire as a measurement tool. The results of this study were as follows: First, the home ownership rate of the participants in this was 81.4%, and 54.9% of them had a bachelor's degree or higher. Therefore, they turned out to be a new silver generation with higher education and stable income and assets. Second, regarding their purchasing behaviors, it was shown that they purchased the largest amount of clothing for themselves and their spouses, children, and grandchildren at the change of seasons. Third, with regard to their average spending on clothing, when they purchased clothing for themselves, it was shown that they purchased clothing at the price of KRW 500,000 or above for themselves but not for their family members. Fourth, their favorite type of fiber was synthetic fiber, and their favorite material property was heaviness, followed by roughness, stiffness, bulkiness, and glossiness. Moreover, with regard to their favorite functional textile, it was shown that the highest percentage of them preferred vitamin textiles, followed by ocher and scented textiles.

Dietary Fiber and Fat Intakes Related to Age in Adults Living in Taejon City (대전지역 성인의 연령별 식이섬유소와 지방 섭취 실태)

  • This study was performed to investigate the variation in dietary fiber and fat intakes, and the contribution of food groups to dietary fiber and fat consumption in relation to age and to examine the relationship between dietary fiber and fat intakes in 337 urban adults aged 20-49 year. Dietary intakes were evaluated with one-day 24-hour recall and two-day dietary record method. Significantly higher intakes of fat in males and saturated fatty acid, monounsaturated fatty acid, polyunsaturated fatty acid, and cholesterol in females were associated with younger age. The ratio of fat to the total energy intake slightly exceeded 20% at 20s and 30s in both males and females. The main source of dietary fiber was vegetables in all age groups of males and 30s of females, but grains in 20s and 40s of females. The main source of fat was meats in all age groups of males and 40s of females, but grains in 20s and 30s in females. The main source of cholesterol was eggs in both males and females. Dietary fiber intake was positively correlated with all fat-related parameters except cholesterol in 20s and 40s and was positively related with fat in 30s of males. For females dietary fiber intake was positively correlated with polyunsaturated fatty acid in 20s and with monounsaturated fatty acid and polyunsaturated fatty acid in 40s. These findings show that there is considerable variation in intake of dietary fiber and fat in relation to age among adults and suggest that these factors should be considered at interventions aimed toward improvement of nutritional status.

Novel Recycling Technology of Ultra-fine Fibrous Materials

  • Ultra-fine fibers are spun by expensive fiber spinning technology using special spinnerets. Ultra-fine fibrous materials have attracted considerable attentions because of their potential applications as high performance wiping cloths, water absorbent sound proofing materials and moisture transfer sporting good. However, production expense of ultra-fine fibers is 5 to 7 times higher than general textile materials. The objective of this research is to develop cost-effective recycling process to produce multi-functional ultra-fine fibrous material in terms of the development of garnetting and carding machines for ultra-fine fibrous material waste and scrap. The efficiency of sound absorption for the recycled polyester nonwoven increased with decreasing length and thickness of component fibers, which was attributed to the reduction of air permeability. Dietary quality differs by consumption of meals prepared at home vs. outside in Korean adults

  • BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES: Eating out has been reported to have negative effects on nutritional status. However, eating out can include meals prepared at home and eaten outside. Conversely, meals eaten at home can be brought from outside, as take-out and home deliveries have become common in Korea. Thus, we tested whether or not meal preparation location influences daily diet quality. SUBJECTS/METHODS: From the Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (KNHANES) 2007-2009, 4,915 Korean adults (20-64 years) were classified into two groups: home-made meal group (HMG), who ate ${\geq}2$ meals per day prepared at home (n = 4,146), and non-home-made meal group (NHMG), who ate ${\geq}2$ meals per day prepared outside home (n = 769). Daily diet quality was determined by energy intake, nutrient intake, Dietary Variety Score (DVS), and Diet Diversity Score (DDS). RESULTS: Compared to the HMG, the NHMG was more likely to consist of men, single, employed, educated and of a higher economic status (all, P < 0.01). The NHMG showed higher energy intakes (1,776 vs. 2,116 kcal/day) with higher percentages of energy from protein (15 vs. 23%) and fat (14 vs. 16%) and lower intakes of dietary fiber, phosphorus, potassium, niacin, and vitamin C (all, P < 0.01) than the HMG, with some variations among age groups. The NHMG tended to consume foods prepared by frying and grilling and had more one-dish meals such as bibimbap, noodles, and dumplings but also showed higher dietary diversity. CONCLUSIONS: It should be noted that home-made meals do not necessarily guarantee a healthy diet, and the effects of meal preparation location on nutritional status might vary depending on socio-demographic characteristics.

  • Kimchi is an important traditional fermented food a korean eating habbit. It is an outstanding food to supply its taste, dietary fiber, vitamins and inorganic substances by microorganism. And recently Kimchi has spotlighted as an international food. To make study of contents concerned Kimchi, analyzed the girl’s high school economics textbook, made questionnaires about necessity of Kimchi education, practiced process of Kimchi to present how to pickle vegetables into Kimchi. The results were: 1. The most of the respondents wanted for Kimchi making and answered that they prepare Kimchi at home by themselves. 2. The most suitable pickling time was about 4 hours and salting conditions by dry and wet styles were 20% for good taste and nutrition of Kimchi. 3. Teaching-learning program by cooperative learning model developed.

  • With rising demand of Internet Service, the existing communication for users (aced the restricted capability and speed, and also failed to satisfy consumer's desire for providing service-quality to them. It can be accomplished the broad-band on subscribe-line to offer various multimedia service to subscriber. But it takes a lot of times and costs. Consequently, it stands out the most economic subscribe-line for acheving a broadband scheme that new transmission technology can be realized the high-speed data communication as the present telephone-line and telephone by the general public of FTTH(Fiber To The Home). As using the pseudo line, this paper have the result that the mesured speed was improved by connecting a variable resistor on the line.

The Ergonomic Study on the Compressibility of the Pillow (베개의 압축성에 대한 인간공학적 연구)

  • The purpose of this study is to find at the basic data for the appropriate compressibility of the pillows for the Koreans as well as, for the appropriate conditions to establish the estimating criterion for the pillows on the market place. This paper also aim to grasp thr compressibility of the materials used to make the pillows for sale. The appropriate compressive rate of the pillows have been investigated by sensuous test. The compressive rate, recovery rate, and decreasing rate of compression and recovery have been investigated by means of ergonomic and physical experiments. The results were as follows; 1) By sensuous test, the compressive rate of the pillows for the most comfortable state turns up $45\%{\pm}5\%$ in men and women. 2) As for the compressive rate and recovery rate of the eight pillow materials on market, panya, duck feather two kinds of synthetic fiber are highest, wood is lowest. 3) The compressive rate of panya, duck feather, and two kinds of fiber is within the range of the comfort by sensuous test. 4) In the durability of the compressive rate and recovery rate against the repeated use of the pillows, duck feather is in the highest grade, panya is the lowest grade and the others are graded between two.

Analysis of Shape and Materials of Saenghwal Hanbok School Uniforms (생활한복교복의 형태분석과 의복소재)

  • Demands and attempts to express Korean traditional beauty are increasing. Some schools choose the uniform in designs expressing the image of Hanbok, but recently there is a few increment of wearing the uniforms. For the improvement of the uniforms, first of all, the shape and the clothing materials of the uniforms should be considered. We have compared and analyzed the shape and the clothing materials of the uniforms reflecting the image of Hanbok, according to seasons and clothing items. The uniforms reflecting the image of Hanbok were worn in eight schools and all of them are Saenghwal Hanbok style. The shape of Saenghwal Hanbok school uniforms showed both Korean style and western style characteristics. Korean style characteristics were expressed through the appearance-related parts while western style characteristics showed through the performance-related parts such as open/closure method, armhole pattern and straight sleeve line. It was shown that girls' uniforms are more diverse and similar to the western style uniforms than boys' uniforms. It was found that most of the clothing material were synthetic fiber or mixture of natural/synthetic fiber, and polyester was shown to be used most.
