  • Influences of different variables that affect the effective flexural rigidity of reinforced concrete (RC) members are not considered in the most seismic codes. Furthermore, in the last decades, the application of steel fibers in concrete matrix designs has been increased, requiring development of an accurate analytical procedure to calculate the effective flexural rigidity of steel fiber reinforced concrete (SFRC) members. In this paper, first, a nonlinear analytical procedure is proposed to calculate the SFRC members' effective flexural rigidity. The proposed model's accuracy is confirmed by comparing the results obtained from nonlinear analysis with those recorded from the experimental testing. Then a parametric study is conducted to investigate the effects of different parameters such as varying axial load and steel fiber are then investigated through moment-curvature analysis of various SFRC (normal-strength concrete) sections. The obtained results show that increasing the steel fiber volume percentage increases the effective flexural rigidity. Also it's been indicated that the varying axial load affects the effective flexural rigidity. Lastly, proper equations are developed to estimate the effective flexural rigidity of SFRC members.

  • Fourier transform has been one of the most common tools to study the frequency characteristics of signals. With the Fourier transform alone, it is difficult to tell whether signal's frequency contents evolve in time or not. Except for a few special cases, the frequency contents of most signals encountered in the real world change with time. Time-frequency methods are developed recently to overcome the drawbacks of Fourier transform, which can represent the information of signals in time and frequency at the same time. In this study, heat damage process of a carbon fiber reinforced plastic(CFRP) and glass fiber reinforced plastic(GFRP) under monotonic tensile loading was characterized by acoustic emission. Different kinds of specimens were used to determine the characteristics of Strength and AE signals. Time-frequency analysis methods were employed for the analysis of fracture mechanism in CFRP such as matrix cracking, debonding and fiber fracture.

  • This paper presents the results of theoretical analysis and experimental test to show the size effect on the fiber strength of filament would pressure vessel. First, a series of fully scaled hoop ring tests with filament would carbon-epoxy were conducted, which exhibited a remarkable size effect on the fiber strength. Next, the failure analyses using WWLM(Weibull Weakest Link Model) and the SMFM(Sequential Multi-step Failure Model) were performed and compared to the hoop ring test data, as well as to unidirectional specimens test data from the literature. It was found that the analysis results significantly underestimated the fiber strengths compared to the test data. In this study, a modified SMFM was proposed through the modification of the length size effect. The fiber strengths from modified SMFM analysis showed good agreement with the test data.

  • This research was designed to compare the subjective evaluation of texture image and preference according to fiber blending ratio of men's suit fabrics. 110 subjects evaluated the texture image and preference of various fabrics. For statistical analysis, factor analysis, MDS, pearson correlation and ANOVA were used. The results were as follows: Sensory image factors of suit fabrics were 'smoothness', 'bulkiness', 'stiffness', 'elasticity', 'moistness' and 'weight sensation'. Sensibility image factors were 'classic', 'practical', 'characteristic' and 'sophisticated'. 'Bulkiness' and 'elasticity' sensory images showed high correlations with sensibility images. Fabrics with high wool blending ratio showed as 'classic' and 'sophisticated', 'bulkiness' and 'elasticity' texture images and fabrics with low wool blending ratio showed texture images of 'characteristic', 'surface character', 'stiffness', 'moistness' and 'weight sensation'. Wool fiber blending ratio affected on the purchase preference and tactile preference. Using regression analysis, it was shown that sensibility images had more of an effect on preference than sensory images. The thickness and pattern type showed positive effects and fiber blending ratio showed negative effects on the preference.

  • Natural fiber/phenolic biocomposites with chopped henequen fibers treated at various levels of electron beam irradiation (EBI) were made by means of a matched-die compression molding method. The interfacial property was explored in terms of interfacial shear strength measured by a single fiber microbonding test. The thermal properties were studied in terms of storage modulus, tan ${\delta}$, thermal expansion and thermal stability measured by dynamic mechanical analysis, thermomechanical analysis and thermogravimetric analysis, respectively. The result showed that the interfacial and thermal properties depend on the treatment level of EBI done to the henequen fiber surfaces. The present result also demonstrates that 10 kGy EBI is most preferable to physically modify the henequen fiber surfaces and then to improve the interfacial property of the biocomposite, supporting earlier results studied with henequen/poly (butylene succinate) and henequen/unsaturated polyester biocomposites.

  • In the present study the behavior of fire and the residual strength of fire-ignited RC slabs are investigated by experimental tests and numerical simulations. The fire tests of RC slabs were carried out in a furnace using the ISO 834 standard fire. The load capacity of the cooled RC slabs that were not loaded during the fire tests was evaluated by additional 3 point bending tests. The influence of the proportion of PP (polypropylene) fibers in the RC slabs on the structural behavior of the RC slabs after the fire loading was investigated. The results of the fire tests showed that the maximum temperature of concrete with PP fiber was lower than that of concrete without PP fiber. As the concrete was heated, the ultimate compressive strength decreased and the ultimate strain increased. The load-deflection relations of RC slabs after fire loading were compared by using existing stress-strain-temperature models. The comparison between the numerical analysis and the experimental tests showed that some numerical analyses were reliable and therefore, can be applied to evaluate the ultimate load of RC slabs after fire loading. The ultimate load capacity after cooling down the RC slabs without PP fiber showed a considerable reduction from that of the RC slabs with PP fiber.

  • This paper presents irradiance distribution model of light radiated from a step-index multimode optical fiber. The model is important in analysis of displacement response characteristics for intensity modulation type optical fiber sensors. The induced model was verified by experimental results. And the displacement response analysis result induced by using the irradiance distribution model was verified by experimental results and compared with using existing irradiance distribution models such as the constant model or the gaussian model. The experiment has better agreement with the analysis result using the induced model in this study than with the others models.

  • Utilization of fiber beam-column element has gained considerable attention in recent years due mainly to its ability to model distributed plasticity over the length of the element through a number of integration points. However, the relatively high sensitivity of the method to modeling parameters as well as material behavior models can pose a significant challenge. Residual drift is one of the seismic demands which is highly sensitive to modeling parameters and material behavior models. Permanent deformations play a prominent role in the post-earthquake evaluation of serviceability of bridges affected by a near-fault ground shaking. In this research, the influence of distributed plasticity modeling parameters using both force-based and displacement-based fiber elements in the prediction of internal forces obtained from the nonlinear static analysis is studied. Having chosen suitable type and size of elements and number of integration points, the authors take the next step by investigating the influence of material behavioral model employed for the prediction of permanent deformations in the nonlinear dynamic analysis. The result shows that the choice of element type and size, number of integration points, modification of cyclic concrete behavior model and reloading strain of concrete significantly influence the fidelity of fiber element method for the prediction of permanent deformations.

  • The increase in color depth of polyester fiber dyed with black disperse dyes was investigated with respect to the kinds of resins and alkali treatment. The color depth of the dyed polyester fiber increased continuously according to the concentration of resins coated onto the fabrics. The alkali treatment to polyester fiber before dyeing also enhanced the color depth. It was thought that the polyester fiber was hydrolyzed by alkali resulting micropores on the sample. And the following treatment with a resin, Jet Black T-101, to the polyester fiber increased the color depth much higher. The successive process of alkali treatment, dyeing and Jet Black T-101 treatment could give the best color depth to polyester fiber. Although the alkali treatment reduced the tensile strength of polyester fiber, the color depth of polyester fiber enhanced sufficiently within the range of practically acceptable weight loss and strength. To analyze the micropore on the polyester fiber formed by alkali treatment, nitrogen porosimeter was used. As the weight loss of polyester fiber treated with alkali increased, the BET(Brunauer-Emmett-Teller) surface area, total pore volume, and average pore size of the sample increased.

  • This paper presents the tensile strength of shotcrete steel fibers depending on the shape of steel fiber. The experimental and numerical analyses are performed in this study. In experimental study, a series of laboratory pullout tests are carried out by changing both the angle and the length of the embedded steel fiber according to the corresponding type of steel fiber in order to derive the optimal type of steel fiber. Results obtained from the experimental work are evaluated and compared with the numerical analysis results. The results clearly show that the pull-out strength of the steel fiber are increased with increasing the hook angle and embedded angle of steel fiber. It is also found that the pull-out strength of the steel fiber is larger in case of the short steel fiber body length.
