The fertilities of pyloploidy mulberries and the germination abilities and shape of poliploidy mulberry seeds fructified by natural cross were investigated and the results are as follows. Regarding the size of seeds, that of the tetraploid was the biggest and that of hexaploid was the smallest among the investigated polyploids. Those of diploid and triploid ranged between those of tetraploid and hexaploid. The fertilization rates of the varieties of Shinkwangppong and Cheongunppong, which were triploid, were 25.4 and 55.0%, respectively, and Shinkwangppong showed 10.2% of cross rate, but Cheongunppong did not have germination ability. The tetraploid seeds showed 61~68% of fertility and 30~54% of cross rate. The Puksan No. 2, which is hexaploid, had about 43% and 7% in fertility and cross rate, respectively. The germination abilities of floating seeds of diploid and tetraploid were comparatively high, but the floating seeds of triploid and hexaploid did not have germination ability. The seeds of diploid had a high fertility of 81~95% and a comparatively high cross rate of 47~74%.
Rice is very sensitive to high temperatures during the reproductive stage, particularly during the flowering and anthesis periods. To determine how high temperatures result in sterility during the flowering period in Korean rice cultivars, groups of 11 cultivars were subjected to different temperature regimes (24, 28, 30, and 33℃) during the flowering stage using sunlit phytotrons. At an average of 33℃, all 11 rice cultivars reached anthesis earlier than at the other temperatures. Microscopy analyses revealed significant differences in pollen germination and pollen viability in cultivars grown at 33℃ compared to those cultured at lower temperatures. At 33℃, the cultivars had significantly lower fertility rates (47% reduction) than cultivars grown at 24℃. These findings are important as rice pollination and fertility depend on the pollen viability and germination. The present study shows that rice fertility is negatively affected by excessively high temperatures.

Exochorda serratifolia, broad-leaved shrub has beautiful flowers and is resistant to cold, shade and decease. New this native plant is considered to be worth being exploited as the outstanding plant for landscaping and horticulture. So this study was executed to utilize Exochorda serratifolia as the planting material for landscaping and horticulture through the survey of its habitat environment and the experimennt of its seed physiology and germination, vegetative propagation, culture and utilization, etc.. The results are as follows ; 1. The color of the flower is white, blooming in the early and middle of May and the seeds ripen late in Sep.. 2. The elevation, elevation, gradient and direction of the native habitat were 250m, 20-25$^{\circ}$and northern side respectively. 3. The soil pH of the natural habitat was 5.3 and soil fertility was poor. 4. Exochorda serratifolia appeared as indicator within P. densiflora community and its neighboring species were Q. mongolica, Q. dentata, R. mucronulatum, L. obtusiloba, E. oxyphillus, C. heterolphylla, var thunbergii, etc.. 5. The optimum temperature for seed germination was found at 20$^{\circ}C$ and the longer the stratification period at 5$^{\circ}C$ was, the lower the germination rate was. 6. The treat merits of GA and Kinetin increased the seed germination rate, especially under the dark condition but their high concentrations decreased the seed germination rate. 7. The rooted rate of the greenwood cutting was the highest at IBA 100ppm plot of vermiculite bed but its high concentration decreased the rooted rate conspicuously. 8. In the tissue culture, the each 1.0 ppd plot of NAA, Kinetin and NAA 1.0ppm + Kinetin showed the best growth. And the mixture of NAA 1.0ppm and Kinetin showed better growth than the single treatment of NAA or Kinetin did. 9. Transplanted Exochorda serratifolia showed healthy growth with shaded environmental condition(42.1% light intensity), therefore they can be cultivated as a shade tolerant landscape plant. 10. It was considered that Exochorda serratifolia was applicable to group planting at shade places or under trees in parks, homes, etc..
This experiment was carried out to obtain the information on the crossability, germination rate, and pollen viability of the progeny from the cross between hexaploid triticale cv. Sinkihomil and five hexaploid wheat varieties. The results are summarized as follows. Seed set was 28.8 to 41.8% (ave-raged 34.1%) in the cross between triticale and wheat, which resulted in 3.61% in F$_2$(selfed F$_1$), 3.99% in F$_1$/P$_1$ 21. 9% in F$_1$/P$_2$ respectively. However, seed set was extremely low in reciprocal crosses when triticale was used as male. In the backcross, crossability was higher in F$_1$/wheat and triticale/F$_1$ than that in wheat/F$_1$ and F$_1$/triticale, respectively. Germination rate of the crossed seed was 95% in F$_1$ 66.3% in F$_2$ (selfed F$_1$), 62.0% in F$_1$/P$_1$ and 81.0% in F$_1$/P$_2$ from the cross between triticale and wheat, respectively. When triticale cv. Sinkihomil was used as male, seeds were degenerated because of the failure of endorsperm development. This might be caused by AAABBBDDR genome constitution in the cytoplasm from a hexaploid wheat. Pollen fertility of F, plant was averaged 34.1% in the cross between triticale and wheat. Significant positive correlation between the pollen fertility and seed set rate in the cross between triticale and wheat were detected.

Green manure crops have a variety of benefits, including improving soil fertility, removing soil salinity, enhancing soil aeration and moisture regulation, reducing the use of chemical fertilizers, reducing nitrous oxide emissions, reducing herbicide use through weed-suppressive effects, promoting agricultural ecosystem protection and carbon dioxide absorption capacity. To find ways to increase the germination rate of legumes and green manure crop seeds, which are imported in large quantities every year. It was carried out that two seed priming methods, osmotic priming and heat treatment, and compared their effects. Heat treatment was treated for 10 minutes at 40℃ or 60℃, followed by rinsing with water. Osmotic priming was applied for 30 seconds in a saline solution with a specific gravity of 1.13. Overall, there was no significant difference in the final germination rate, but it was found that osmotic priming and heat treatment affected the germination speed. However, applying heat treatment and osmotic priming simultaneously did not affect the germination characteristics. Therefore, it is suggested that heat treatment and osmotic priming can increase the germination speed of soybean and green manure crops.
1) Germination rate was rather irregular than decreasing as increasing dose of radiation and there were no differences between Kyong-Sam and Chuong-Bang of Chinese cabbage. 2) In R1 generation, abnormal leaves from seedling of irradiated seeds were observed. These were more apparent in X-ray irradiation than in thermal neutron. 3) Seedling height was inhibited with increasing dose of X-ray and thermal neutrons. Growth inhibition was more remarkable in X-ray than in thermal neutron. Kyong-Sam demonstrated more sensitivity than Chyong-Bang in both X-ray and thermal neutron. 4) Seedling height produced from seeds subjected to thermal neutrons showed small variation around its mean value, while in X-irradiation there was a greater deviaton from the mean value. 5) Fertility was decreased as increasing with dose, while the frequency of abortive pollen was increased. There were variability of the fertility and frequency of abortive pollen among plants or branches of a plant. 6) The mutants were obtained more in thermal neutron irradiation than in X-ray. The types of mutations obtained in Chinese radish of R2 generation were abnormal leaf, densely glowing leaf, degeneration in growing point and dwarf. The maximum frequency of phenotypic mutations was abnormal leaf mutation.
Mutation tachniques inducing more useful mutations and reducing somatic effects need to be improved for crop breeding. Seeds of barley varieties ; Dema, Grosso were treated with two types of mutagens ; 1) chemical treatment: single treatment or double treatment of two mutagens (N-nitroso-N-methylurea ; MNH, Sodium Azide; NaN$_3$) 2) gamma ray irradiation treatment. After treatment, half of seeds were used for germination test and half of seeds were sown to the field. With the higher dose of mutagen both chemical and gamma ray were plants treated, the higher rate of growth reduction rate was in M$_1$ seedling. In chemical treatment, germination rate of seeds, growth rate of coleoptile and root in double treatment of chemical mutagens were better than single treatments, especially in same dose. Growth inhibition rate of plant in double treatment of 1.0mM MNH(0.5mM MNH + 0.5mM MNH), for example, were less than one of plants of single treatment of 1.0mM MNH in pot and petri dish test. Growth reduction rate of culm and fertility rate in M$_1$ plants double treated in same dose of single treatment were also less than single one. With the higher dose of mutagen both chemical and gamma ray were plants treated, the higher frequency of chlorophyll mutants was in M$_2$ seedling. The rate of chlorophyll mutants in double treatment of chemical mutagens were higher than single treatment. Double treatment methods can be a improved method for induction of new good mutants, which were induced more useful mutations and reduced harmful somatic effects.

This study was conducted to provide the fundamental data based on the agronomic characteristics of domestic aroma rice, widely cultivated domestic rice and foreign aroma rice for breeding of functional aromatic rice. Among the 104 varieties, all of domestic aroma rice and widely cultivated rice varieties were headed, 24 of 84 varieties of foreign aroma rice were not headed. The average heading date of domestic aroma rice Japonica types of domestic rice was later as 136 day, and Tongil types of domestic aroma rice were faster as 122 day. The average culm length of Indica types of foreign aroma rice was longer as 130 cm, and Tongil types of were shorter as 74 cm. The average panicle length of domestic aroma rice and traditional rice were about 21 cm, and Indica types of foreign aroma rice were longer as 29.5 cm. The average 1,000 grain weight of Tongil types of domestic aroma rice and was not a difference with the domestic aroma rice and was more 2.5 g than the Indica types of foreign aroma rice. The average ratio of grain width and length of Indica types of foreign aroma rice were highest as 3.29 (W/L), and the domestic traditional rice was lowest as 1.7 (W/L). The average fertility rate of the domestic aroma rice, the widely cultivated domestic rice, and the Japonica types of foreign aroma rice were above 89.7%, but the Indica types of foreign and the Tongil types of domestic aroma rice were below 65.4%. The average germination rate of foreign aroma rice were above 83.7%, and domestic aroma rice were above 90.4%. The non-glutinous rice were 64 varieties (84.2%) of total 104 accessions of material rice and the waxy rice were 7 varieties (1%). In the domestic aroma rice, Hyangmi2ho and Aranghyangchalbyeo has a mild aroma grade. In the foreign aroma rice, 22 of 40 varieties of Indica types and 9 of 16 varieties of Japonica types has a lightly aroma grade. And 13 varieties of widely cultivated domestic rice has a non-aroma grade.
The study aims are to examine the characteristics of artificial and natural hybrids between Viola albida var. albida (= albida, from below) and V. albida var. chaerophylloides (= chaerophylloides, from below), and to confirm if hybrids could be fertile and make populations in their native habitats. The 1st filial (= F1, from below) leaf shape produced by artificial crossing between albida and chaerophylloides was the same as that of V. albida var. takahashii (= takahashii, from below), and F1 bore also both chasmogamous and cleistogamous flowers. F1 seed number was 9.6 per cleistogamous pods, which was remarkably less than the average of 38.2 for albida and chaerophylloides, but the germination rate was all similar. The leaf type of self-crossed 2nd offsprings (= F2, from below) showed all leaf types found in the Viola albida complex, but the ratio of chaerophylloides leaf type was relatively low. Individuals whose F2 leaf type was restored to albida produced an average of 31.4 seeds per capsule, meaning that fertility was restored. On the other hand, individuals of F2 takahashii leaf type come to fruition a low average of 10.4 seeds per capsule, which is similar to that of takahashii. The results of crossbreeding experiment, where is their native habitats, were similar to that of laboratory. Both albida and chaerophylloids in Mt. Bulmyeong distribute extensively, but takahashii make a small population only in places where albida and chaerophylloides grow together. Summarizing the above results is suggesting that the speciation of takahashii was done by hybrid between albida and chaerophylloides, and these have been maintained with relatively small population by cleistogamous capsules.
