  • The yield performance and nutrient quality of barley for pellets making from whole crop material were discussed during 1993-1994. Barley (cv. Olbori) was grown on paddy land after rice cutivation and was harvested at early stage of physiological maturity. A column type of whole crop pellets was produced by 1.5cm diameter and 2.5cm height. Barley war evaluated as a suitable materials for whole crop pellet making. Barley produced higher yield and better qualitative roughage in the utilization of pellet making than in the silage making. Dry matter yields were obtained 12.02 MTha in pellet making and 11.70 MT/ha in silage making. Net energy value of barley pellet were 6.54 MJ in net energy lactation and 635 SV in starch equivalent net energy. Feeding of barley pellet improved milk production of daily cattle Daily milk yields per head were 25.1 liter in silage feeding and 25.9 liter in pellet feeding. Production cost of pellets and silages made from whole crop barley were 169.07 won/kg and 124.15 won/kg dry matter, respectively.

  • In order to clarify the solidification mechanism of Al-Si alloy, Mushy Degree of Eutectic Solidification (MDE) and Centerline Feeding Resistance (CFR) were systematically studied by casting with various compositions of $Al-(6{\sim}18%)$ Si alloys into several kinds of molds having different cooling rates. The results are as follows: 1. CFR% increases slightly as solute concentration increases, but decreases remarkably as the cooling rate of the mold increases, that is, the composition dependence of the alloys has more effect on the change of CFR% than that of the mold cooling rate. 2. The composition dependence of MDE value has the same tendency as that of Degree of Eutectic Solidification (DES). MDE value within the range of hypereutectic composition is larger than that of hypoeutectic and it represents the maximum value at eutectic composition. The higher the cooling rate is, the less the MDE value is.

  • In this study, the effects of feeding citrus byproduct on physicochemical and sensory characteristics of chicken meats were investigated. The samples consisted of chicken meats provided with only feed for laying hen without citrus byproduct (T-0), and the chicken meats fed with 1.0%, 1.5% and 2.0% citrus byproduct during the starter (initial period feed; $1{\sim}9th$ day), the grower (middle period feed; $10{\sim}24th$ day), and the finisher (latter period feed; $25{\sim}36th$ day), respectively. The $L^*$ value of thigh was significantly lower in the T-1 than in the T-0, the $a^*$ value was significantly higher in the T-1 than in the T-0 (p<0.05). The water holding capacity of thigh was significantly higher in the T-1 than in the T-0 and the cooking loss was significantly higher in the T-0 than in the T-1 (p<0.05). The acid value was significantly higher in the T-0 than in the T-1 (p<0.05). Antioxidant activity was higher in the T1 than in the T-0 (p<0.05). There was no significance between T-0 and T-1 regardless of feeding citrus byproduct, in terms of chicken's $b^*$ value, frozen loss, thawing loss, hardness, springiness, cohesiveness, gumminess, chewiness, shear force, free amino acid content of hot water extracts, taste, flavor, tenderness, juiciness and palatability.

  • During the evaporation of garlic juice by centrifugal thin film evaporator (Centri-Therm, CT-1B), the effect of feeding rate was investigated for its operation properties. On the process condition of feeding rate of 25 to 125 kg/h, theoretical average thickness of the garlic juice film on the rotating cone and residence time of the juice in the evaporator varied in the range of 0.52 to 0.89 mm and 1.77 to 6.75 second, respectively. And the flow of garlic juice was considered as a streamline flow by Reynolds number. At constant temperatures of steam and juice evaporation, concentration ratio decreased with the increase of the feeding rate. But the evapoartion rate and overall heat transfer coefficient increased with the increase of the feeding rate until the feeding rate reached a certain value and then decreased. On the conditions of $25{\leq}$feeding rate ${\leq}125\;kg/h$, evaporation temperature of $40^{\circ}C$, $95{\leq}steam$ $temperature≤120^{\circ}C$ and initial feed concentration of $32^{\circ}Brix$, concentration ratio and overall heat transfer coefficient were $1.04{\sim}2.04\;and\;3,074.33{\sim}17,614.70kJ/m^{2}{\cdot}h{\cdot}^{\circ}C$.

  • This experiment was conducted to investigate the effects of feeding with MS (miraculous soil-bacteria)-fermented food waste on feeding efficiency and meat quality of mallard. Twenty one heads of 12 weeks-old mallards were fed with three different mixing rates of MS-fermented food waste (0, 20 and 50 %) with 7 replicates. After 6 weeks of feeding, weight gain and feed intake were measured to estimate feeding efficiency, moreover physico-chemical characteristics, amino acids and fatty acids of the fresh slaughtered mallards were analyzed to determine meat quality. The feeding efficiency of 0 % fermented food waste (control) was significantly (p<0.05) higher than other treatments. Water holding capacity and pH were not significantly differed. The color value in lightness of control meat was higher, while in redness was lower than that of the plots mixed with fermented food waste. Total content of amino acids in thigh meat was relatively lower in control, but that in breast meat showed a reverse trend. The amount of unsaturated fatty acids in both thigh and breast meat was the highest in the 50 % mixed plot. Considering economic and environmental aspects for mallard feeding, this results indicated that MS fermented food waste could be a useful resources for mallard feed.

  • Yongchonppon, one of the native varities, is the highest clod resistant. For its practical use, feeding test has been implemented in the ordinary rearing and in the branch rearing 1987 through 1988. The results are summarized as follows. 1. The feeding of Yongchonppong at the 4th and 5th instar made 5% decrease in spring and 10% decrease of cocoon yield in autumn, respectively, while cocoon shell ratio was a little less and percentage of raw silk was a little high, as compared to the feeding of Kaeryangppong. 2. The feeding of Yongchonppong at the 4th instar only showed nearly same nearing result as the feeding of Kaeryangppon. 3. In case of the feeding of yongchonppong at the 4th instar and early stage of the 5th instar, cocoon yield and percentage of raw silk marked 96% and 97-98% of Kaeryangppong. 4. The total nitrogen and crude protein of Yongchonnppong was less, while the total carbohydrate, crude ash and crude fat were high, as compared to those of Kaeryangppong. It had more phosphate and boric and less manganese than Kaeryangppong. 5. The leaf aereal weight of Yongchonppong was 1.57g/dcm2 and the leaf thickness was 113$\mu$. The moisture reducing rate marked 41.3% after three hour exposure to the air.

  • A comparison of the ARC metabolizable energy system and the NRC net energy system was made with special reference to growing steers. Two simulation models, one based on the ARC and other on the NRC system, were constructed to examine differences between the energy systems. The average daily live-weight gains predicted from both models for growing steers were compared under various conditions in which equal feeding levels and metabolizabilities were assumed. The two simulation models yielded similar results with very high energy intake with high quality feed. Difference between the two systems became larger as feeding conditions deviated from the above. The ARC system generally predicted higher daily live-weight gains than the NRC system. This appeared to be due to the higher efficiency of utilization of metabolizable energy ($k_m$ and $k_f$) and basal metabolism (F), and lower energy value of growth (EVG) in the ARC system.

  • Overstock in aquaculture is a matter of concern in aquaculture management. To sort fish based on fingerling size in case of overstocking is an important problem in aquaculture farm. This study aims to determine the amount of fry overstock and sorting time in aquaculture farm. This study builds a mathematical model that finds the value of decision variables to optimize objective function summing up the fingerling purchasing cost, aquaculture farm operating cost and feeding cost under mortality and farming period constraints. The proposed mathematical model involves following biological and economical variables and coefficients: (1) number of fingerlings, (2) sorting time, (3) fish growth rate and variation, (4) mortality, (5) price of a fry (6) feeding cost, and (7) possible sorting periods. Numerical simulation is presented herein. The objective of numerical simulation is to provide decision makers to analyse and comprehend the proposed model. When extensive biological data about growth function of fry becomes available, the proposed model can be widely applicable to real aquaculture farms.
