A Comparison of Fault Tolerant Ethernet Implementation Approaches (고장 극복 (Fault Tolerant) Ethernet 구현 방안의 비교 분석)

  • Reliability is absolutely necessary in most recent mission critical systems which usually utilize the Ethernet based computer networks. A typical way to increase system reliability is to equip the fault tolerant Ethernet. In this paper we try to formulate the fault tolerant dual Ethernet concept and presents a comparison of its implementation approaches. Two types of dual Ethernet configuration are analyzed; the divided and the connected. Then the characteristics of three current implementation approaches which are the hardware based, the software based, and the recently proposed hybrid approach are compared. The results show that the hardware based or the hybrid approaches can be a better solution for the real time mission critical systems. Also for the systems which require the use of Commercial-Off-The-Shelf (COTS) hardware for fault tolerant Ethernet the possible choice is the software based or the hybrid approach.

  • Nowadays, there are various networked systems with many computers. In most networked systems, a crucial objective is to keep transmitting and/or receiving data continuously even though failures exist. How can one make a computer continue transmitting and/or receiving data even when there are some errors on a link? Fault-Tolerant Ethernet (FTE) can be a solution to this question. In this paper, we propose a Localized Software-based Fault-Tolerant Ethernet (LSFTE). Our new approach fulfills the general FTE requirements. It takes advantage of redundant cable lines to maintain communication in a faulty environment. A software layer, which uses a simple and effective algorithm, is added above the LAN card driver software to detect and overcome faults. For our approach, there is no need to change the existing hardware or the end-use interfaces. Furthermore, the fault-detection time is reduced significantly compared to the conventional software-based approach.

  • The link-fault recovery in the normal Ethernet bridged networks has relied on the Spanning Tree Protocol(STP) or Rapid STP. However, STP can not offer fast error recovery which is needed real-time services such as aircraft. In this paper, we compare automatic protection switching(APS) providing fault-tolerant function in the BcN back bone system with Avionic Full Duplex Switched Ethernet(AFDX) which is recently equipped in the A380 for Airbone Databuses. Also, we propose a link-bypass scheme for improving fault-tolerant performance of the AFDX by connecting switches and bypass fault section when a fault is originated on the link. For comparing and verifying the performance of proposed scheme, we simulated Ethernet, AFDX, APS and proposed AFDX with link-bypass scheme using NS-2. The proposed AFDX with link-bypass scheme can be applied to aircrafts, BcN backbone networks and industrial automatic networks.

  • 최근 대부분의 첨단 (Mission Critical) 무기체계가 컴퓨터 노드 연결에 의한 Ethernet 네트워크 기반으로 구성되고 있어, 이에 따른 시스템의 신뢰성 측면이 더욱 중요한 요소로 대두되고 있다. 본고에서는 첨단 무기체계의 신뢰도를 높이기 위한 Fault Tolerant Ethernet (FTE)의 기본인 이중화 방식을 비교 소개하고자 한다. 기존의 소프트웨어 접근방식과 하드웨어 접근방식은 물론, 최근 본 연구팀이 제안한 복합 (Hybrid) 방식도 비교 대상으로 하였다. 또한 FTE 구현 시 필수적 고려사항인 고장감시/자동 복구 Metric 및 관련 Simulation 결과도 함께 제시한다.

  • In high reliability systems for industrial network such as railway signal system, fieldbus protocols have been known to satisfy the real-time and fault tolerant requirements. But, the application of fieldbus has been limited due to the high cost of hardware and software, and the difficulty in interfacing with multi-vendor products. Therefore, as an alternative to fieldbus, the computer network technology, especially Ethernet(IEEE 802.3), is being adapted to the industrial network. In this paper, we propose a switched Ethernet based railway signal system because of its very promising prospect for industrial application due to the elimination of uncertainties in the network operation. In addition, we propose the redundancy architecture for the reliability of network components. More specifically, this paper presents an analytical performance evaluation of switched Ethernet for railway signal system, and shows experimental evaluation of redundancy architecture.

  • Launch control system controls the sequence for launching missile in weapon systems. This system have to generate the engagement plan, input information and launch the missile in timeliness requirement. Such a system may fail to operate correctly either due to errors in hardware and software or due to violation of timing constraints. We presented fault-tolerant ethernet for embedded real-time system like launch control system. This approach is designed to handle network faults using dual commercial-off-the-shelf(COTS) network devices. To support fault-tolerant ethernet each node is composed dual channel ethernet and designed the communication middleware for network fault detect and recovery. Especially for time-critical system, the middleware is being developed to achieve that no point of network failure shall take down or cause loss of communication to network nodes.

  • This paper describes the Petri Net(PN) model for reliability analysis of fault-tolerant dual Ethernet which Is applied in Naval Combat System. The network for Naval Combat System performs failure detection and auto path recovery by handling redundant path in case of temporary link failure. After studying the behavior of this kind of network, the reliability analysis model is proposed using stochastic Petri Net and continuous-time Markov chains. Finally, the numerical result is analyzed according to changing the failure rate and the recover rate of link.

  • One of the important operational requirements for mission critical Ethernet networked system is having the fault tolerant capability. Such capability can be obtained by equipping multiport Network Interface Card (NIC) in each node in the system. Conventional NIC uses two or more Media Access Controls (MACs) and a co-processor for the MAC switching whenever an active port fails. Since firmware is needed for the co-processor, longer fail-over switching and degraded throughput can be generally expected. Furthermore the system upgrading requiring the firmware revision in each tactical node demands high cost. In this paper we propose a novel single MAC based NIC that does not use a co-processor, but just use general discrete building blocks such as MAC chip and switching chip, which results in better performances than conventional method. Experimental results validate our scheme.

  • In this paper, we propose the protocol of Ethernet that will receive a popular interesting in the automotive intelligent network, it also attempts to implementation and verification through simulation and experiments to propose a fault tolerance algorithm when the data transfer on it. It has proven the usefulness of the system in order to apply toward an existing automotive communication system. In the case of actual real-time data for automotive industry, we generated a randomly-generated data which is the set of payload into a standard format to complete the experiment. Among the implemented existing algorithms performance, we confirmed the effectiveness of all range from a single data to mixed (Hybrid-type) data, to verify the proposed algorithm.

  • A Dual-Path Ethernet Module(DPEM) is developed to improve Local Area Network (LAN)'s performance, High Availability(H/A) and security. Since a DPEM simply locates at the front end of any network device as a transparent add-on, it does not require sophisticated server reconfiguration. Our evaluation results show that the developed scheme is more efficient than conventional LAN structures in various aspects.
