Gold contents with major and trace elements have been determined in 67 fresh igneous and altered wall rocks in the acid-sulfate alteration zone of the Ogmaesan-Seongsan pyrophyllite deposits in the Haenam area of the south-western part of Korean peninsula. The results are as follows; (1) Li contents have a tendency to show high value in dickite and altered rocks with dickite, while As, Mo and Sb contents have tendencies to show high values in alunite vein and silicified zone. F contents are higher in the altered rocks compared to fresh rocks. (2) Gold contents are enriched in alunite vein and silicified zone of the Seongsan deposit, but depleted in dickite and altered rock with dickite. Gold contents are especially concentrated in fault or conjunction area of two faults. (3) Gold contents are higher values in the mineral assemblages of alunite-quartz-pyrite and alteration zone of the Seongsan deposit among the studied deposits. (4) Gold contents in samples of silicified zones tend to show positive correlations with Ag, As, Co, Hg, Sb and V content, but negative correlations with Y and Zr contents, while on the other gold contents of silicified tuffs tend to show positive correlations with Hg and Sb contents. Therefore it is important to survey alunite vein and silicified zone at the conjunction of faults, and to analyze pathfinder elements such as Ag, As, Hg and Sb for geological and geochemical exploration of gold in the studied deposits.
Because fault gouge developed at the center of fault is recognized as one of the most important weak sites, it is evident that clay mineralogy and physical properties greatly affect the rock stability. The purpose of this study is to establish the relationship of mineralogy and physical factors that control rock stability in fault zones. We analyzed a total of 51 samples from 16 main faults which were selected from a Korea fracture map, using XRD, SEM, and physical analyses like unit weight, friction and cohesion properties. Though it is considered that the most common clay minerals comprising fault gouge are kaolinite, illite and smectite, clay mineralogy slightly varies depending on lithology: illite > smectite > kaolinite and chlorite in volcanic rocks, kaolinite and chlorite > illite > smectite in sedimentary rocks, and illite > smectite > kaolinite and chlorite in abundance, respectively. Friction angle decreases with increasing clay content. Cohesion increases with increasing clay content below the 45 % region while it decreases with increasing clay content at the region higher than 45%, with some scatters in the data. It is likely that these results are ascribed to the physical heterogeneity of fault gouges with varying content of different clay minerals.
The granitic rocks distributed in the southern part of the Yangsan Fault are classified into five distinct rock facies based on the field relation, petrography and geochemical characteristics. These five different rock facies can be grouped into two considering their origins. Group I, which reveals various evidences of magma mixing, includes three rock facies of granodiorite, enclave-rich porphyritic granite, and enclave-poor porphyritic granite. Group H intruding Croup I includes equigranular granite and micrographic granite with no evidence of magma mixing. It is suggested that the distinctively different trace element and isotopic chemistries between group I and II, support evolution from the different parental magma. It is suggested that the three rock facies in group I were generated by different degrees of magma mixing in addition to fractionation of plagioclase. MMEs experienced fractionation of biotite. The two facies in group H seem to have been generated from different parent magma from group I and evolved by fractionation of K-feldspar. The Rb-Sr whole-rock ages of the group I rocks yield $59.2\~58.9Ma$, and those of the group II rocks give 53. $3\~51.7Ma$, regardless of their distribution whether they occur in the eastern or western parts of the Yangsan Fault. Based on Sm-Nd isotope compositions, depleted mantle model ages $(T_2DM)$ of the group I range $0.8\~0.9Ga$, while those of the group II$0.6\~0.7Ga$.
Monthly monitoring, 3D scan survey, and electrical resistivity survey were conducted from January 2018 to August 2022 to identify the cause of rockfall occurring in Daljeon-ri Columnar Joint (Natural Monument No. 415), Pohang. A total of 3,231 rocks fell from the columnar joint over the past 5 years, and 1,521 (47%) of the falling rocks were below 20 cm in length, 978 (30.3%) of 20-30 cm, and 732 (22.7%) of rocks over 30 cm. While the number of rockfalls by year has decreased since 2018, the frequency of rockfalls bigger than 30 cm tends to increase. Large-scale rockfalls occurred mainly during the thawing season (March-April) and the rainy season (June-July), and the analysis of the relationship between cumulative rainfall and rockfall occurrence showed that cumulative rainfall for 3 to 4 days is also closely related to the occurrence of rockfall. Smectite and illite, which are expansible clay minerals, were observed in XRD analysis of the slope material (filling minerals) in the columnar joint, and the presence of a fault fracture zone was confirmed in the electrical resistivity survey. In addition, the confirmed fault fracture zone and the maximum erosion point analyzed through 3D precision measurement coincided with the main rockfall occurrence point observed by the BTC-6PXD camera. Therefore, the main cause of rockfall at Daljeon-ri columnar joint in Pohang is a combination of internal factors (development of fault fracture zones and joints, weathering of rocks, presence of expansive clay minerals) and external factors (precipitation, rapid thawing phenomenon), resulting in large-scale rockfall. Meanwhile, it was also confirmed that the Pohang-Gyeongju earthquake, which was continuously raised, was not the main cause.
The purpose of this study is to analyze the Slope Angles and Summit Levels in the relation with the geological structures in the Taehwa River Basii where the NNE-SSW trending Yangsan fault and subsiduary fault are well developed. The mean slope angle in the Taehwa river basin is 12.18$^{\circ}$. The mean slope is higher in the volcanic and metamorphic terrain than in the area of granitic and sedimentary rocks. In view of a slope angle, the area can be divided into four categories, that is, low plains (0-5$^{\circ}$), hilly gentle slopes (5-15$^{\circ}$), moderate steep mountain slope (15-25$^{\circ}$), and steep mountain slope (over 25$^{\circ}$). The analysis of summit level exhibits that the mean of the highest points in the Taehwa River Basin composed mainly of the volcanic and metamorphic rocks is 327m.
In this study, we collected data through the investigation of rock slopes of highway. By analyzing the collected data, the main factors of rock slope failure were studied. We studied on the failure types and scales according to rock types and geological structures in many rock slopes of highway. As a result, it was shown that many failed slopes were distributed in the areas of Cretaceous sedimentary rocks of south-eastern part in the Korean Peninsula and the Gneiss Complex in both Kyonggi-Do and Kangwon-Do. According to rock types, the following slope failure types were shown : that igneous rocks had the types of rock fall, plane failure, soil erosion and circular failure but had low failure frequency, and sedimentary rocks had predominantly the type of plane failure. Metamorphic rock showed the types of circular failure, wedge failure and plane failure due to poor rock qualities . According to geological structures, the following slope failure types were shown slope failure in igneous rocks was caused by joints, and in sedimentary rocks by bedding plane, and in metamorphic rocks by faults and poor rock qualities.
The geology of the Tumbang Lapan area consists of Permian to Carboniferous metamorphic rocks, Cretaceous granitic rocks, and Permian to Tertiary sedimentary and volcanic rocks. Three faults are developed in surveyed area, and are functioned as channels of the hydrothermal solution which farmed quartz veins within tuff3. In the mineralized area, argillic and propylitic alterations are dominant. Argillic altered rocks show the alteration mineral assemblages of kaolinte+sericite+quartz+chlorite+pyrite. Mineral association in propylitic alteration is chlorite+epidote+feldspar+quartz+pyrite+ magnetite. Vein type, fracture filling, stockwork are observed in survey area. As a result of analysis of samples from quartz veins and altered rocks, some mineralized rocks showed $0.01\~4.6g/t$ of gold.
Several volcanics are found within the Tertiary sedimentary basins, southeastern part of Korea. The sedimentary basins have been interpreted to have formed in the framework of separation of the East Sea. The volcanics are Eocene or Early and Middle Miocene in ages, showing a distincetve chronological gap, and show mafic and silicic (bimodal) in composotion. The Miocene volcanics were regionally and stratigraphically grouped into two varieties along the Hyeongsan fault; younger volcanics (13.6-15.2 Ma, K) from the north of the fault, erupted after the opening of the East Sea, and older volcanics (16.2-21.1 Ma) from the south of the fault. Gravity data were analyzed to identify the cause of clustered seismicity that occurred intensively in Yeoncheon, located in the central part of the Korean Peninsula. Our analysis suggests that the En echelon faults developed in the northwest-southeast direction. In addition, in the eastern part of the Dongducheon Fault, it was interpreted that high-density lower bedrock intermittently lifts close to the surface due to vertical tectonic movement accompanied by a flower structure. The fracture zone of the Dongducheon Fault is estimated that the width is about 200 m, the depth is at least 5 km, and the density is about 15% lower than the adjacent rocks. It is analyzed that the shallow earthquakes that occurred within 5 km depth was concentrated along the low-density En echelon fault fracture zone developed between the high-density rocks intruding close to the surface. Therefore, the earthquakes can be interpreted as the result that the north-south stress caused by the dextral tectonic movement of the Dongducheon Fault activated the En echelon fault in the northwest-southeast direction.

Electrical resistivity and seismic refraction surveys were conducted to investigate geologic structures and geotechnical characteristics of the subsurface in Dok-do island, along with rock physical properties. The resistivity results in Seo-do island show that the fault adjacent to the fisherman's shelter is a normal fault and extended towards the NW direction. Bedded Rapilli Tuff in the downstream was more severely influenced in depth by weathering and erosion than Trachy Andesite II in the upstream area. The physical properties of the rocks illustrate that Trachyte and Trachy Andesite are hardest, Massive Tuff Breccia is next, and Tuffs are the most soft rocks in Dok-do island.
