  • Due to continuous increase of electric power consumption, couple of resolutions for improving accuracy in power system like line separation are being studied. The increase of the power demand can cause problems such as supply difficulties of the electricity and broadband outages, failure, etc. When a fault occurs in the power system, a fault current also increases. Fault current creates problems like reduction of lifespan and failure on the power system. In order to resolve these problems, the reduction of initial fault current using the characteristics of superconducting element was applied to fault current limiter. We applied the system to high speed fault current limiter. We found that the superconducting element effectively reduced initial fault current and the fault current was limited by changing operation of high speed interrupter.

  • Arc Fault Current is an electric discharge which is occurred in two opposite electrode. In this Paper, arc current control algorithm is designed for the interruption of arc fault current which is occurred in the low voltage network. This arc Is one of the main causes of electric fire. Arc fault in electrical network has the characteristics of low current, high impedance and high frequency. Conventional control algorithm does not have the arc current interrupt function. Hence, Control algorithm of arc current is designed for the interruption of arc fault current which has the modified arc characteristics.

  • To apply the superconducting fault current limiter(SFCL) into a power system, the analysis for its recovery characteristics as well as the consideration for its cooperation with other protecting machine such as a circuit breaker is required. The recovery characteristics of the flux-lock type SFCL like its current limiting characteristics are dependent on the winding direction of two coils. In this paper, the experiments of the current limiting and the recovery characteristics of the flux-lock type SFCL with YBCO thin film were performed. From the analysis on the experimental results due to the winding direction of two coils, the limited fault current in case of the additive polarity winding was observed to be lower than that for the case of the subtractive polarity winding. In addition, the recovery time was found to be faster in case of the additive polarity winding compared to the subtractive polarity winding.

  • The fault current has been increasing due to expansive substation facilities for meeting the increase of demand. To limit increasing fault current in a power system, among methods the superconducting fault current limiter (SFCL) has been considered to be adopted in the power grid. However, in case of adopting SFCL in the power system, most of SFCLs need to solve problems such as recovery, cost. With efforts to solve those problems, the novel fault current limiting device which is called hybrid SFCL is developed. To apply the hybrid SFCL, it has to be needed to analyze application possibility and itself operation characteristics. In this paper, the fault current limiting and operation characteristics of hybrid SFCL with first half cycle the limiting operation in case of various resistances of superconducting element were analyzed through experiment.

  • The fault current limiting characteristics of three-phase transformer type superconducting fault current limiter (SFCL), which consisted of three-phase primary and secondary windings wound on E-I iron core, one high-TC superconducting (HTSC) element connected with the secondary winding of one phase and another HTSC element connected in parallel with other two secondary windings of two phases, were analyzed. Unlike other three-phase transformer type SFCLs with three HTSC elements, three-phase transformer type SFCL using double quench has the merit to perform fault current limiting operation for three-phase ground faults with two HTSC elements. To verify its proper three-phase ground fault current limiting operation, three-phase ground faults such as single-line ground, double-line ground and triple-line ground faults were generated in three-phase simulated power system installed with three-phase transformer type SFCL using double quench. From analysis of its fault current limiting characteristics based on tested results, three-phase transformer type SFCL using double quench was shown to be effectively operated for all three-phase ground faults.

  • This paper is a study on the computer simulation of the characteristics of the superconducting fault current limiter. Input variable parameters are apparent power, load resistance value, line resistance value and so on. Initial fault current 2 times larger than the trigger current is required to reduce the switching time of SFCL. The propagation velocity increases abruptly, the transport current is several times larger than the ciritical current. In this paper, the switching time is calculated to be 323$\mu$ sec, and the initial fault current is 19 times larger than the critical current. Because the trigger coils are bifilar winding, they have little impedance in superconducting state. After fault occurred, the limiting coil acts as a superconducting reactor and the trigger coils quench at a critical current. Without the SFCL in the circuit, fault current after the load impedence is shorted might be increased to 1100A. The fault current is, therefore, successfully limited by the superconducting limiting coil to 100A determined by the coil inductance.

  • Fault currents characteristics contain decaying DC offset. First cycle peak value of fault currents is higher than steady-state fault current value. These characteristics can affect the operation of protective device. To reduce the asymmetric fault current, the method using a series connection of two hybrid-type Superconducting Fault Current Limiter(SFCL) components, an auxiliary SFCL and a main SFCL, has been proposed. The auxiliary SFCL limits the first half cycle fault current, while main SFCL limits the steady state fault currents. This paper proposed a decision method of the optimal insertion resistance of auxiliary and main SFCL components. To verify the effectiveness of proposed scheme, the various simulations are performed by using Electromagnetic Transient Program(EMTP).

  • In this paper was proposed a flux offset-type fault current limiter as means of reducing fault currents. To secure the operation reliability of a flux offset-type fault current limiter, constructed a simulation system to analyze its operation characteristics by generating a double line-to-line fault. According to the test results, the system performed stably without any impedance. However, when an accident occurred, the flux-offset of magnetic was not occurred. Because of this, any impedance occurred at circuit. It was confirmed that the impedance was low and fast to limit the fault current. At this time, the fault current limited rate was about 95%.

  • As one of the countermeasures to solve the increase of the fault current in a power system, the superconducting fault current limiter (SFCL) has been noticed together with the development of a various types of SFCL, which has accelerated the researches to apply a SFCL into a power system. Among the developed SFCLs, the transformer type SFCL is expected to be available for adjusting the voltage and the current ratings of the SFCL. In this paper, the fault current limiting and the bus line‘s voltage sag suppressing effect by the transformer type SFCL were investigated and the case without the transformer type SFCL was compared as well. Through the analysis on the results of the short-circuit tests, the fault current limiting and the bus-line voltage suppressing characteristics of the transformer type SFCL could be confirmed to be effectively performed.

  • In this paper, the fault current limiting and the hysteresys characteristics of a superconducting fault current limiter (SFCL) using magnetic coupling of two coils on the iron core with an air-gap were analyzed. The introduction of the air-gap in the SFCL with magnetically coupled two coils can suppress the saturation of the iron-core and, on the other hand, make the limiting impedance of the SFCL decreased, which results from the increase of the exciting current. To analyze the effect of the aig-gap on the fault current limiting characteristics of the SFCL, the hysteresys curves of the iron core comprising the SFCL were derived from the short-circuit experiment and the variation in the voltage-current trace of the SFCL during the fault period was analyzed. Through the comparison with the current limiting characteristics of the SFCL without air-gap, the air-gap could be confirmed to contribute to the suppression of the iron core's saturation through the increase of the SFCL's burden from the short-circuit current.
