This study aims to assess the effects of specimen thickness (ST) on fatigue crack growth in the early stages of crack propagation and near failure in magnesium alloys. The analysis of variance (ANOVA) method was adopted because fatigue crack propagation in magnesium alloys exhibits statistical behavior. The equality of variance test and residual diagnostics were performed on the grown cracks to confirm the validity of ANOVA by verifying the normal distribution and mutual independence of the residuals and their homoscedasticity. ANOVA confirmed that ST heavily impacts crack growth; i.e., when ST is smaller, cracks grow faster in the early crack propagation stage and break more quickly before the formation of larger cracks. We found that ST significantly affects fatigue crack growth in the early crack propagation stage and near the failure stage in magnesium alloys. The regression model was also used to predict crack formation near the failure stage.
The operating experience showed that the fatigue is one of the major piping failure mechanisms in nuclear power plants (NPPs). The pressure and/or temperature loading transients, the vibration, and the mechanical cyclic loading during the plant operation may induce the fatigue failure in the nuclear piping. Recently, many fatigue piping failure occurred at the socket weld area have been widely reported. Many failure cases showed that the gap requirement between the pipe and fitting in the socket weld was not satisfied though the ASME Code Sec. III requires 1/16 inch gap in the socket weld. The ASME Code OM also limits the vibration level of the piping system, but some failure cases showed the limitation was not satisfied during the plant operation. In this paper, the fatigue behavior of the socket weld in the nuclear piping was estimated by using the three dimensional finite element method. The results are as follows. (1) The socket weld is susceptible to the vibration if the vibration levels exceed the requirement in the ASME Code OM. (2) The effect of the pressure or temperature transient load on the socket weld in NPPs is not significant because of the very low frequency of the transient during the plant lifetime operation. (3) 'No gap' is very risky to the socket weld integrity for the specific systems having the vibration condition to exceed the requirement in the ASME OM Code and/or the transient loading condition. (4) The reduction of the weld leg size from $1.09*t_1$ to $0.75*t_1$ can affect severely on the socket weld integrity.

PURPOSE. The objective of this study was to evaluate the effect of thickness reduction and fatigue on the failure load of monolithic zirconia crowns. MATERIALS AND METHODS. 140 CAD-CAM fabricated crowns (3Y-TZP, inCorisTZI, Dentsply-Sirona) with different ceramic thicknesses (2.0, 1.5, 1.0, 0.8, 0.5 mm, respectively, named G2, G1.5, G1, G0.8, and G0.5) were investigated. Dies of a mandibular first molar were made of composite resin. The zirconia crowns were luted with a resin composite cement (RelyX Unicem 2 Automix, 3M ESPE). Half of the specimens (n = 14 per group) were mouth-motion-fatigued (1.2 million cycles, 1.6 Hz, 200 N/ 5 - 55℃, groups named G2-F, G1.5-F, G1-F, G0.8-F, and G0.5-F). Single-load to failure was performed using a universal testing-machine. Fracture modes were analyzed. Data were statistically analyzed using a Weibull 2-parameter distribution (90% CI) to determine the characteristic strength and Weibull modulus differences among the groups. RESULTS. Three crowns (21%) of G0.8 and five crowns (36%) of G0.5 showed cracks after fatigue. Characteristic strength was the highest for G2, followed by G1.5. Intermediate values were observed for G1 and G1-F, followed by significantly lower values for G0.8, G0.8-F, and G0.5, and the lowest for G0.5-F. Weibull modulus was the lowest for G0.8, intermediate for G0.8-F and G0.5, and significantly higher for the remaining groups. Fatigue only affected G0.5-F. CONCLUSION. Reduced crown thickness lead to reduced characteristic strength, even under failure loads that exceed physiological chewing forces. Fatigue significantly reduced the failure load of 0.5 mm monolithic 3Y-TZP crowns.
Recently, axle load, operating speed and traffic density on railroads have had a tendency to increase and thereby cause additional pressure applied on used track. These operating conditions frequently result in service failure due to wear caused by wheel-rail contact and fatigue damage under cyclic loading. Among rail defects, the transverse crack, which has been the most dangerous type of fatigue damages, is developed from the subsurface crack near the rail running face and grows perpendicular to the rail surface. Therefore, it is necessary to investigate systematically the growth behavior of transverse crack for rail steel under mixed mode. In this study, the fatigue crack growth behavior of the transverse crack in rail steel was experimentally investigated under mixed-mode variable amplitude loadings.
It is well-known that the defects (existing in structures) and the material degradation(caused by the fatigue load) generally initiate the failure of structures. The NDE such as ultrasonic technique which can be used to detect the size and the orientation of defects has been utilized to estimate the life and stability of structures. However, only few experimental reports made by using the ultrasonic technique have been published for the case of fatigue estimation of materials and structures. The purpose of this study is, thus, to derive the relationship between ultrasonic attenuation and fatigue behavior of Polycarbonate and PMMA through ultrasonic characterization. It is also attempted to offer NDE experimental procedure which may be useful to predict fatigue life.
The deformation behaviors under uniaxial compressive cyclic loading were investigated for fresh rocks and freeze-thaw cycled samples. The Pocheon granite which is one of the most popular building stone in Korea was selected for tests. 0.5 Hz and 50% of dynamic strength were used as test conditions for frequency and fatigue span, respectively. For freezethaw procedure, sample were frozen for 3 hours under the temperature of -2$0^{\circ}C$ and then followed 3 hours thawing under the temperature of +2$0^{\circ}C$. Twenty seven samples were used as untreated and seventy three for freeze-thaw samples. No failure occurred up to 15000 cycles at the stress level of 60% of dynamic strength, indicating that the lowest strees level for fatigue failure may be around 60% of dynamic strength. Permanent strain and damping capacity curves show that there were three stages when rock behaves like under creep. Young's moduli were increased and Possion's ratios were decreased with the increase of the number of cycles. Possion's ratios varied more rapidly than Young's moduli did with the increase of the number of cycles. This may represent that most microcracks developed by fatigue stress are parallel to the axis of loading. The deformation behavior of freeze-thaw cycled samples were almost the same as that of untreated samples. However, the result of freeze-thaw cycled samples showed lower regression constant, indicating that the physical durability of rock is much lowered because of cyclic temperature variation.
Fine grained Al-5083 alloy produced by equal channel angular pressing (ECAP) at $120^{\circ}C$ was tested for investigating mechanical properties and crack growth propagation behavior. Also, FEM stress and strain analysis for the samples during ECAP were investigated, using a plastic deformation analysis software DEFORM 2-D. Coarse grained as-received samples exhibited UTS of 255.6MPa with a elongation to failure of 34.4%. By contrast, the ECAPed fine grained samples exhibited UTS of 362.0MPa with a elongation to failure of 12.9%. Fatigue crack growth resistance and threshold of fine grained samples were lower than that of as-received coarse grained samples. The higher fatigue crack growth rate in the fine grained ECAPed samples may partially arise from small roughness closure effect due to smoother fracture surfaces.
The characteristics of fatigue cumulative damage and fatigue life of 8-harness satin woven CFRP composites with a circular hole under constant amplitude and 2-level block loading are estimated by Stochastic Makov chain model. It is found in this study that the fatigue damage accumulation behavior is very random and the fatigue damage is accumulated as two regions under constant amplitude fatigue loading. In constant amplitude fatigue loading the predicted mean number of cycles to a specified damage state by Markov chain model shows a good agreement with the test result. The predicted distribution of the fatigue cumulative damage by Markov chain model is similar to the test result. The fatigue life predictions under 2-level block loading by Markov chain model revised are good fitted to the test result more than by 2-parameter Weibull distribution function using percent failure rule.
In this study, the fatigue property of U rib-to-crossbeam connections in orthotropic steel bridge (OSB) crossbeams under heavy traffic vehicle load was investigated considering the effects of in-plane shear stress. The applicability of an improved structural stress (ISS) method was validated for the fatigue behavior analysis of nonwelded arc-shaped cutout regions in multiaxial stress states. Various types of fatigue testing specimens were compared for investigating the equivalent structural stress, fatigue crack initiation positions, and failure modes with the unified standards. Furthermore, the implications of OSB crossbeams and specified loading cases are discussed with respect to the improved method. The ISS method is proven to be applicable for analyzing the fatigue property of nonwelded arc-shaped cutout regions in OSB crossbeams. The used method is essential for gaining a reliable prediction of the most likely failure modes under a specific heavy traffic vehicle load. The evaluated results using the used method are proven to be accurate with a slighter standard deviation. We obtained the trend of equivalent structural stress in arc-shaped cutout regions and validated the crack initiation positions and propagation directions by comparing them with the fatigue testing results. The implications of crossbeam spans on fatigue property are less significant than the effects of crossbeams.
Fatigue is a process of progressive permanent internal structural change in a material subjected to repeitive stresses. These change may be damaging and result in progressive growth of cracks and complete fracture if the stress repetitins are sufficiently large. For structural members subjected to cyclic loads, the continuous and irrecoverable damage processes are taking place. These processes are referred as the cumulative damage processes due to fatigue loading. Moreover, increased use of high strength concrete makes the fatigue problem more important because the cross-section and dead weight are reduced by using high strength concrete. The purpose of this study is to investigate the shear fatigue behavior of reinforced concrete beams according to shear reinforcement ratio and concrete compressive strength under repeated loadings. For this purpose, comprehensive static and fatigue tests of reinforced concrete beams were conducted. The major test variables for the fatigue teats are the concrete strength and the amount of shear reinforcements. The increase of deflections and steel strains according to load repetition has been plotted and analyzed to explore the damage accumulation phenomena of reinforced concrete beams. An analytical model for shear fatigue behavior has been introduced to analyze the damage accumulation under fatigue loads. The failure mode and fatigue lives have been also studied in the present study. The comparisons between analytical results and experimental data show good correlation.
