  • Ultrafine grained (UFG) low carbon (0.15 wt.% C) steel produced by equal channel angula. pressing (ECAP) was tested for investigating the effect of load ratio on the fatigue crack growth rate. Fatigue crack growth resistance and threshold of UFG steel were lower than that of asreceived coarse grained steel. It was attributed to the less tortuous crack path. The UFG steel exhibited slightly higher crack growth rates and a lower △Kth with an increase of R ratio. The R ratio effect on crack growth rates and △Kth was basically indistinguishable at lower load ratio (R >0.3), compared to other alloys, which indicates that contribution of the crack closure vanishes. The crack growth rate curve for UFG steel exhibited a longer linear extension to the lower growth rate regime than that for the coarse grained as-received steel.

  • Antifatigue failure technology take an important the part of current industries. Currently, the shot peening is used for removing the defect from the surface of steel and improving the fatigue strength on surface. Therefore in this paper the effect of compressive residual stress by shot peening on fatigue crack growth characteristics in stress ratio(R=0.1, 0.3, 0.6)was investigated with considering fracture mechanics. There is difference between shot peening specimen and unpeening specimen. Fatigue crack growth rate of shot peening specimen was lower than that of unpeening specimen. Fatigue lift shows more improvement in the shot peening material than in the unpeening material. And compressive residual stress of surface on the shot peening processed operate resistance force of fatigue crack propagation. That is the constrained force about plasticity deformation was strengthened by resultant stress, which resulted from plasticity deformation and compressive residual stress in the process of fatigue crack propagation.

  • Corrosion fatigue fracture with change in the grain size of M.E.F. dual phase steel is investigated in 3.5% NaCI aqueous solution at pH 2, 4, 6, 9, and 11. Generally speaking, decrease in corrosion fatigue life is strongly dependent on decrease in pH and slightly on the grain size. For the B material with the big grain size, the fatigue life is small due to its large reduction ratio of corrosion fatigue life. The influence of grain size on the reduction ratio of corrosion fatigue life is large at pH 11-6. Whi9le at pH 4-2 the reduction ratio of corrosion fatigue life only depends on the corrosion effect. The larger grain size and the lass pH result in the greater influence on corrosion fatigue crack propagation rate. As pH decreases, the plateau portion in the crack propagation rate curves of the B material are distinct. Crack propagation rate curves become slow down at high .DELTA.K range because crack closure effect by minute corrosion products inside crack causes the oxidation corrosion action less effective for a certain period of time. In A material with small grain size, fatigue life is increased in proportion with increase of martensite intergranular which brings forth restraining the crack propagation decreases crack propagation rate. Corrosion pit which is created in the surface of specimen is found at pH 6,4 and 2 which is noticeable and the unevenness of the surface of the specimen becomes severe as pH decreases. The unevenness of corrosion fatigue fracture surface is severe as the effect of pH increases i.e. as pH decreases. In proportion with increase in the grain size and decrease in pH, the aspect of brittle fracture becomes evident.

  • 6063-T5 alloys are tested in laboratory air, water and 3% NaCl solution to investigate the effects of corrosive environment on the retardation behavior through single overload fatigue test. Also, the fatigue crack propagation and the crack closure behavior are studied. The results obtained in this experimental study are summarized as follows. 1) Behaviors of fatigue crack growth retardation are observed in water and 3% NaCl solution as they do in air. The number of delay cycles and the size of affected region by single overload decrease greatly in water and 3% NaCl compared with those in air. 2) In fractographic results, the overload marking by single overload appear remarkably in air, but indistinctly in water and 3% NaCl solution. 3) The effect of crack closure on crack propagation is most remarkable in the beginning of crack propagation. With crack propagation, the crack closure level and its effect decrease greatly.

  • Fatigue crack propagation behaviors and life prediction for SUS 321 plate and its electron beam weld metal were investigated using compact tension specimens. The larger the stress ratio is, the faster the crack propagates, but the variation of crack propagation rate decreases. The effect of stress ratio is greater in the slow crack propagation area than in the faster one. The crack propagation rate of electron beam weld metal is faster than that of base metal because of hardening, weld defect and residual stress in welding area. The crack propagation rate of transverse weld metal has a lower than that of base metal due to the effect of residual stress, but in the time of passing through welding area, has a higher rate. The crack propagation rate using $\Delta$K$_{eff}$ can be well plotted regardless of stress ratio. The fatigue life prediction method of considering crack closure more exactly predicts fatigue life than conventional one. conventional one.e.

  • High velocity oxygen-fuel thermal spray coating of the WC-Co cermet material is a well-established process for modifying the surface properties of the structural components exposed to the corrosive and wear attacks, and also these coating are well-known method to improve the fatigue strength of material. In this study, HVOF coated SM490B are prepared to evaluation of the effect of coating on tension and fatigue crack growth behavior. The pre-crack of the fatigue crack growth test specimens machined at deposited material area, heat affected zone and boundary, respectively. Through these test, the following results are obtained: 1) Tensile strength was about 498 MPa, and fracture occurred on base metal area. 2) The fatigue crack of coated specimens propagated more rapidly than non-coated specimen in all specimens. 3) In the same coating thickness specimens, the specimens with pre-crack at boundary more rapidly propagated than the specimens with pre-crack at HAZ and deposited material area. These results can be used as basic data in a structural integrity evaluation of rolled SM490B weldments considering HVOF coating.

  • This study has been made to investigate into the behavior of fatigue limit, of fatigue crack initiation, and of fatigue crack propagation under the condition of rotating bending stress; specifically on the independency of stress field as well as the crack behavior of surface micro hole defect, which is made artificially through the specimen. The results obtained can be summarized as followa; 1) For the single micro hole defect, initiation of fatigue crack is occurred at both tips of microhole defect simultaneosly along the slip which are produced in the range of maximum principal stress arround micro hole defect independent of the size of micro hole defect. 2) For the neighbored deuble micro hole defects with equal size, in the range ($\frac{L}{r}$)ratio $\gtrsim$ 3 defined as the size of micro hole defect(2r) to the distance between the centers of micro hole defects (2L), the crack behavior of the micro hole defects is same as single one. However, for the range of $\frac{L}{r}$<3, the interference effect becomes significant as the ratio approaches to 1.

  • In this study, we investigated the effect of fatigue crack propagation of the beams which have a vital importance in engineering applications, on the natural frequency of the system. Beams which have a wide range of applications, are used as fundamental structural elements in engineering structures. Therefore, early detection of any damages in these structures is of vital importance for the prevention of possible destructive damages. One of the widely used methods of early detection of damages is the vibration analysis of the structure. Hence, it is of vital importance to detect and monitor any changes in the natural frequencies of the structure. From this standpoint, in this study we experimentally investigated the effect of fatigue crack propagation on beams produced from 4140 steel, of the natural frequency of the beam. A crack was opened on the $8{\times}16{\times}500mm$ beam using a 3 mm long and 0.25 mm wide wire erosion. The beam, then, underwent 3 point bending tests at 10 Hz with a dynamic fatigue device and its natural frequencies were measured in scheduled intervals and any changes taking place on the natural frequencies of the beam were measured. This data allowed us to identify and measure the crack occurring on the beam subjected to dynamic loading, during the propagation phase. This method produced experimental data. The experimental data showed that the natural frequency of the beam decreased with the propagation of the fatigue crack on the beam.

  • We investigated fatigue crack growth behavior in laser-welded sheet metal caused by a single applied overload The fatigue specimens were made using butt jointed cold rolled sheet metal that was welded with a $CO_2$ laser, The effects of the specimen thickness and overload ratio were determined from fatigue crack propagation tests, These tests were performed in such a way that the fatigue loading was aligned parallel to the weld line while the crack propagated perpendicular to the weld line, Overload ratios of 1.0, 1.5, and 2. 0 were applied near the tip of the fatigue crack at points located 6, 4, and 2 mm from the weld line. The specimens were either 0.9 or 2.0 mm thick. The size of the plastic zone at the crack tip due to the single applied overload was also determined using finite element analysis.
