Fatigue failure of a grid structure using bolt-sphere joints is liable to occur in a high-strength bolt due to the alternating and reciprocal actions of a suspension crane. In this study, variable amplitude fatigue tests were carried out on 20 40 Cr steel alloy M30 high-strength bolts using an MTS fatigue testing machine, and four cyclic stress amplitude loading patterns, Low-High, High-Low, Low-High-Low, and High-Low-High, were tested. The scanning electron microscope images of bolt fatigue failure due to variable amplitude stress were obtained, and the fractographic analysis of fatigue fractures was performed to investigate the fatigue failure mechanisms. Based on the available data from the constant amplitude fatigue tests, the variable amplitude fatigue life of an M30 high-strength bolt in a bolt-sphere joint was estimated using both Miner's rule and the Corten-Dolan model. Since both cumulative damage models gave similar predictions, Miner's rule is suggested for estimating the variable-amplitude fatigue life of M30 high-strength bolts in a grid structure with bolt-sphere joints; the S-N fatigue curve of the M30 high-strength bolts under variable amplitude loading was derived using equivalent stress amplitude as a design parameter.
The composite blades of offshore wind turbines accumulate structural damage such as fatigue cracking due to harsh operation environments during their service time, leading to premature structural failures. This paper investigates various fatigue crack models for reproducing crack development in composite blades and proposes a stochastic approach to predict fatigue crack evolution and to analyse failure probability for the composite blades. Three typical fatigue models for the propagation of fatigue cracks, i.e., Miner model, Paris model and Reifsnider model, are discussed to reproduce the fatigue crack evolution in composite blades subjected to cyclical loadings. The lifetime probability of fatigue failure of the composite blades is estimated by stochastic deterioration modelling such as gamma process. Based on time-dependent reliability analysis and lifecycle cost analysis, an optimised maintenance policy is determined to make the optimal decision for the composite blades during the service time. A numerical example is employed to investigate the effectiveness of predicting fatigue crack growth, estimating the probability of fatigue failure and evaluating an optimal maintenance policy. The results from the numerical study show that the stochastic gamma process together with the proper fatigue models can provide a useful tool for remaining useful life predictions and optimum maintenance strategies of the composite blades of offshore wind turbines.
This paper investigates the compressive fatigue behaviour of polypropylene fibre reinforced self compacting concrete with Granite Sawing Waste (GSW). An experimental programme was conducted to obtain the fatigue lives of fibre reinforced self compacting concrete (FRSCC) at various stress levels. The stress ratio was kept constant as 0.3. Compressive fatigue test was conducted on 60 cubic specimens with 100mm edge length and 0.1% of polypropylene fibres at a frequency of 0.05Hz. The test results indicate that the fatigue lives of concretes containing granite sawing waste follow the double-parameter Weibull distribution. The fatigue strength equations have been developed based on different probabilities of failure.
Investigating safer ways to design and use to prevent a loss of life and property by failure of the structures are necessary and assessing total fatigue life with initiation and propagation of fatigue crack accurately through fatigue analysis is very important. The object of this study is to examine the initial life and propagation life when the fatigue crack is introduced from the root which is likely to appear in LOP(Lack of Penetration) cruciform fillet welded structure including bridges, ships and gas storage facilities which are impossible to be fully penetrated and to measure the rate of fatigue life until the final cleavage failure. As the result, each rate of fatigue life for fatigue failure is somewhat different in the range of 5% according to the thickness of material, however, the overall rate of initial life is in the range of 34~39% and propagation life showed the range of 61~66%.
In this research, to develope the A1 7075/CFRP multilayered hybrid composites, CRALL(Carbon Reinforced aluminum lamiate) specimens were processed by autoclavecuring system that curing temperature, time, surface pretreatment condition of aluminum were constant. Andthe fatigye life and failure mechanism on CFRP volume fraction and fiber orientation of CRALLspecimens were investigated. A fatigue life was greatly influenced by effect of CFRP fiber volume fraction but it was less effected than those of fiber orientation. The fatigue failure arised from interface delamination of CFRP and aluminum sheet after shear fracture of aluminum layer. The failure mechanism is assumed that the aluminum laminates which divide the CFRP into many thim layers tend to arrest the failure propagation.

The gear was made of SNC815 case-carburized, quench hardened and tempered steel. The gears were failed far earlier than the expected service life used in the industrial site. Causes of the failed gear were analyzed by microstructure observation. By the SEM and micro structure examinations, the damaged surfaces had been weared and failed by fatigue. Through microscope observation on the damaged surface, it was found that the cause of failure was determined by external overloading and the initial stage of the damage was closely related to complex contact fatigue failure. The overload and contact fatigue contributed to the early failure cause.

The spider of a drum washing machine receives the repeated fatigue loadings during laundering. Although the spider is designed statically safely, it often happens fatigue failure. Therefore it requires the safe design for fatigue and needs the prediction of quantitative fatigue life. The S-N diagram for a spider material is developed by fatigue test and statistical analysis. The stresses are measured directly from strain gages on the spider. To predict the fatigue life of spider, the rainflow counting method and Miner's rule are used. The data for fatigue life are analyzed statistically. From these data, reliability estimation for fatigue life can be done and also, equivalent fatigue life can be obtained. It will be applied to make and improve to a short period for design and prototype test.
Predicting fatigue life by numerical methods was almost impossible in the field of rubber materials. One of the reasons is that there is not obvious fracture criteria caused by nonstandardization of material and excessively various way of mixing process. But, tearing energy as fracture factor can be applied to a rubber-like material regardless of different types of fillers, relative to other fracture factors and the crack growth process of rubber could be considered as the whole fatigue failure process by the existence of potential defects in industrial rubber components. This characteristic of fatigue failure could make it possible to predict the fatigue life of rubber components in theoretical way. FESEM photographs of the surface of industrial rubber components were analyzed for verifying the existence and distribution of potential defects. For the prediction of fatigue life, theoretical way of evaluating tearing energy for the general shape of test-piece was proposed. Also, algebraic expression for the prediction of fatigue life was derived from the rough cut growth rate equation and verified by comparing with experimental fatigue lives of dumbbell fatigue specimen in various loading condition.

Fatigue behavior of carbon fiber reinforced polyimide composite materials was studied experimentally and analytically. The physical variables, such as cyclic displacements and hysteresis loop energy were observed during fatigue tests. Fatigue life of the investigated [0/90]$_{2S}$ laminates was predicted by H'||'&'||'H models which was proposed based on the fatigue modulus and resultant strain. The predicted fatigue life by H'||'&'||'H curves was reasonably close to the experimental data. Fractography study shows that fatigue failure mechanism of [0/90]$_{2S}$ laminated composite materials involves failure break, matrix tearing and fiber-matrix debonding as well as delamination of layers.

Possibility of fatigue failure in punching shear of reinforced concrete decks of highway bridges is analytically investigated by applying Matsui et al.'s experimental finding to models of 2-meter span decks designed in compliance with previous and current codes. Decks made of concrete of compressive strength of 240㎏/㎠ showed longer fatigue life than decks made of 210㎏/㎠ concrete at the same Md/U rations ; higher Md/U ratio resulted in linger fatigue life but its effect is insignificant in decks having effective depths of 14 and 15cm. Decks designed to higher load factors as specified by current codes showed longer fatigue life than decks designed to lower load factors specified by previous codes ; yet fatigue failure appeared to occur in both decks within their normal life span, thus indicating need for redefining the minimum deck thickness.
