  • Art-Make-up has resulted in occupying one of the central areas of this culture. Art Make-up is currently undergoing various changes. The viewpoint of modern make-up is the infiniteness of emotion such as the subjectively individualized expressions and aesthetic values breaking with conventional thought. The most significant change is the idea of the 'grotesque'. The purpose of this research is to re-clarify the development of the diversity, professionalism and artistic feature through the study of Art make-up based on the 'grotesque' style. This also strives to focus attention at observing the deep and mysterious workings of the human inner world. In order to explain the features of 'grotesque' Art make-up, six images below are presented. Firstly, Inharmonious images. Secondly, disgusting inhuman images. Thirdly, mechanical images. Fourthly, distorted and exaggerated images. Fifthly, diabolic and horrific images. And, lastly, playful images. These six images thoroughly demonstrate the 'grotesque' features. The fact at we can see the 'grotesque' features in Art make-up explains the enormous growth of Art make-up and the unlimited range of expression in this field. It also implies that the choice of material and theme is not restricted to universal artistic criteria. In closing, it is necessary that Art make-up is thought of not as actual art but more as a tool for its subjects. As a result, this research will provide valuable information for studies in the future.

  • The purpose of this research is to study if the images that make-up advertisement tries to symbolize can be altered with changes only in the colors of make-up and without any changes in other factors and if colors can be tools of communication in image. Also, we studied the interaction between the partial changes of eyes and lips. The results are as follows. First, we studied if the images that make-up advertisement tries to symbolize can be altered with changes only in the colors of make-up and without any changes in other factors. The study revealed more or less differences, however, when we applied colors of each image on photos, people had higher recognition on that image more than other images. Therefore, we can conclude that the image can be changed merely with the change from colors of make-up. Second, we changed the make-up colors of lips and eyes separately and studied the interaction of the two. When natural colors and elegant color were applied, there was no interaction of color application between eyes and lips within 0.1 significance level. In the case of romantic colors, there was interaction of applying colors between lips and eyes within 0.1 significance level. When we applied gorgeous colors and modern colors, there was interaction of applying colors between lips and eyes within 0.1 significance level. Therefore, from the interaction of the two, it was recognized to be most gorgeous or most modern when gorgeous colors or modern colors were applied in both lips and eyes.

For this study, a lot of documents and papers related to the woman's make-up were collected and reviewed. In particular, to analyze the characteristics of woman's make up trend in 1960s, a lot of women's pictures and makeup-related articles from 143 volumes of woman's magazines such as Yeowon and Jubusaenghwal were collected. Among the 624 pictures, fifty two pictures which were good enough for studying the total face and makeup were used for this study. The period of this study ranges from 1960 through 1969 and the analysis is focused on skin expression, eyebrow, eye shadow, eye line, lipstick, and brusher and through the related articles, the intention and contents of make up. were delivered and found out. The results are as follows. In early 1960s, the woman's make up was characterized by the make up ranging from unnatural and gray skin expression to dense pink skin expression, giving natural and glossy tint onto the skin and in particular putting a bright accent on the eyelid, eye or lip. In the mid-1960s, the make up style expressed skin more naturally, giving more shading on the eyelid, nose and lip, thus having cubic make-up. In the late 1960s, the make up became more refined and harmonized by using colors according to the TPO (time, place and objective) and skin color. The study results show that the women in 1960s pursued the "cute and young looking image" and used the make up to express their images young and cute. In the mid 1960s, the minimalism which pursued the pure and simple make up appeared in US. That trend affected the make up style of Korean women and hence Korean women showed more natural make up style in the mid and late 1960s.
