Precision Cardiology: Phenotype-targeted Therapies for HFmrEF and HFpEF

  • Heart failure with mid-range ejection fraction (HFmrEF) and preserved ejection fraction (HFpEF) represent over half of heart failure cases but lack proven effective therapies beyond sodium-glucose cotransporter 2 inhibitor and diuretics. HFmrEF and HFpEF are heterogeneous conditions requiring precision phenotyping to enable tailored therapies. This review covers concepts on precision medicine approaches for HFmrEF and HFpEF. Areas discussed include HFmrEF mechanisms, anti-inflammatory and antifibrotic treatments for obesity-related HFpEF, If inhibition for HFpEF with atrial fibrillation, and mineralocorticoid receptor antagonism for chronic kidney disease-HFpEF. Incorporating precision phenotyping and matched interventions in HFmrEF and HFpEF trials will further advance therapy compared to blanket approaches.

  • Many of researches regarding mechanical properties of composite materials are associated with humid environment and temperature. Especially the temperature is a very important factor influencing the design of thermoplastic composites. However, the effect of temperature on impact behavior of reinforced composites have not yet been fully explored. An approach which predicts critical fracture toughness GIC was performed by the impact test in this work The main goal of this work is to study effects of temperature in the impact test with glass fiber/polypropylene(GF/pp) composites. The critical fracture energy and failure mechanisms of GF/PP composites are investigated in the temperature range of $60^{\circ}C\;to\;-50^{\circ}C$ by impact test. The critical fracture energy shows a maximum at ambient temperature and it tends to decrease as temperature goes up or goes down. Major failure mechanisms can be classified such as fiber matrix debonding, fiber pull-out and/or delamination and matrix deformation.

Limit analysis of a shallow subway tunnel with staged construction

  • This paper presents a limit analysis of the series of construction stages of shallow tunneling method by investigating their respective safety factors and failure mechanisms. A case study for one particular cross-section of Beijing Subway Line 7 is undertaken, with a focus on the effects of multiple soil layers and construction sequencing of dual tunnels. Results show that using the step-excavation technique can render a higher safety factor for the excavation of a tunnel compared to the entire cross-section being excavated all at once. The failure mechanisms for each different construction stage are discussed and corresponding key locations are suggested to monitor the safety during tunneling. Simultaneous excavation of dual tunnels in the same cross-section should be expressly avoided considering their potential negative interactions. The normal and shear forces as well as bending moment of the primary lining and locking anchor pipe are found to reach their maximum value at Stage 6, before closure of the primary lining. Designing these struts should consider the effects of different construction stages of shallow tunneling method.

  • Failure mechanisms were investigated for the two layer thermal barrier coatings consisting of NiCrAlY bond coat and $ZrO_2-8wt.\% Y_{2}O_3$ ceramic coating during cyclic oxidation. $Al_{2}O_3$ developed at the ceramic coating/bond coat interface first, followed by the Cr/Ni rich oxides such as $NiCr_{2}O_4 and Ni(Al,Cr)_{2}O_4$ during cyclic oxidation It was observed that the spalling of ceramic coatings took place primarily within the NiCrAlY bond coat oxidation products or at the interface between the bond coat oxidation products and zirconia based ceramic coating or the bond coat. It was also observed that the fracture within these oxidation products occurred with the formation of $Ni(Cr,Al)_{2}O_4$ spinel or Cr/Ni rich oxides. It was therefore concluded that the formation of these oxides was a life-limiting event for the thermal barrier coatings.

  • In order to use PUR/CuO Composites as the sealing materials for ships equipment, this research has been performed. PUR/CuO composites are produced by using ultrasonic waves. The increase of CuO leads to increase in the tensile strength and shore hardness. The cumulative wear volume shows a tendency to increase in proportional to sliding distance. As the CuO particles of these composites indicated, the friction coefficient was slightly increased. The major failure mechanisms were lapping layers, deformation of matrix, plowing, debonding of particles and microcracking by scanning electric microscopy photograph of the wear tested surface.

The critical fracture energy increased as the fiber volume fraction ratio increased. The critical fracture energy shows a maximum at ambient temperature and it tends to decreases as temperature goes up or goes down.   • Responses of ultrasonic back scattered energy and AE (Acoustic Emission) characteristics related to the progressive damage of $[0/90-{2}]_s$ and $[0/90-{4}]_s$ crossply laminates were studied. It was found that the ultrasonic backscattered energy was sensitive to the matrix cracking but not sensitive to other failure mechanisms. However, AE was proved to be sensitive to matrix cracking as well as other failure mechanisms.AE signals were analyzed by investigating the amplitude and number of counts per event for corresponding applied strain. Loading and unloading tests were conducted separately. AE results showed Kaiser effect in the crossply composite laminates and ultrasonic results supported the AE results.

  • The motor current signature provides an important source of the information for the faults diagnosis of three-phase induction motor. The theoretical principles behind the generation of unique signal characteristics, which are indicative of failure mechanisms, are Presented. The fault detection techniques that can be used to diagnose mechanical Problems, stator and rotor winding failure mechanisms, and air-gap eccentricity are described. A theoretical analysis is presented which predicts the presence of unique signature patterns in the current that are only characteristics of the fault. The predictions are verified by experimental results from a special fault Producing test rig and on-site tests in a steel company. And this study have made new diagnostic algorithm for the operating induction motors with the test results. These developments are including the use of monitoring and analysis of electric current to diagnose mechanical and electrical problems and gave the precise test results automatically.

  • In high-performance cold work applications, tool failure depends on the predominating loading conditions. Typical failure mechanisms are a combination of abrasive wear, adhesive wear, plastic deformation, cracking and edge crumbling. In this paper we demonstrate how the microstructure of tool steels can be positively influenced by modifying the alloying system and the production route to meet the demands of the different loading situations which occur during operation. The investigation was focused on ductility, fatigue strength and wear resistance. Theoretical considerations were confirmed by practical tests.
