  • A reliability analysis and design procedure based on the design of experiment (DOE) is combined with the response surface method (RSM) for numerical efficiency. The procedure established is based on a 3$^n$ full factorial DOE for numerical quadrature using explicit formula of optimum levels and weights derived for general distributions. The full factorial moment method (FFMM) shows good performance in terms of accuracy and ability to treat non-normally distributed random variables. But, the FFMM becomes very inefficient because the number of function evaluation required increases exponentially as the number of random variables considered increases. To enhance the efficiency, the response surface moment method (RSMM) is proposed. In RSMM, experiments only with high probability are conducted and the rest of data are complemented by a quadratic response surface approximation without mixed terms. The response surface is updated by conducting experiments one by one until the value of failure probability is converged. It is calculated using the Pearson system and the four statistical moments obtained from the experimental data. A measure for checking the relative importance of an experimental point is proposed and named as influence index. During the update of response surface, mixed terms can be added into the formulation.

  • In unreplicated factorial or fractional factorial experiments, the presence of one or more outliers can seriously affect the analysis of variance. Using the normal plot of t residuals to identify outliers in factorial or fractional factorial is an easy method to find these dubious points. In some cases, the t residuals form the identical pairs. One can not tell from the plot which is doubtful. This phenomenon occurs for all minimal designs of resolution IV, which fits the model containing all main effects and some two-factor interactions, whether it is orthogonal or not. In these kinds of models, when we drop one point or two points (not foldover pair) from the fraction, the phenomenon of identical pairs of t residuals may still occur. In this paper, the theoretical background of the phenomenon and its sequences will be investigated in detail.

  • In this study, we analyzed about that after design form manufacture master pattern in Rapid Prototyping-RP through design program, processes to manufacture prototype using Vacuum Casting. In Rapid Prototyping-RP, there is an en-or by shrinkage of resin and, in Vacuum Casting, there is an error by shrinkage of silicon. To select condition which shrinkage become the minimum of each process, manufactured prototype after using Full Factorial Design of Design of Experiments, We could confirm shrinkage using reverse engineering and that result came into effect ANOVA 2-way. We applied errors of each process to master pattern, and then presented the method to improve flood control precision of prototype of Vacuum Casting.

  • The objective of this investigation was to indentify major factors affecting surface roughness among various parameters of electropolishing process using the design of an experiment method (full factorial design) for UNS S31603. Factors selected included electrolyte composition ratio, applied current density, and electrolytic polishing time. They were compared through analysis of variance (ANOVA). Results of ANOVA revealed that all parameters could affect surface roughness, with the influence of electrolyte composition ratio being the highest. As a result of surface analysis after electropolishing, the specimen with the deepest surface damage was about 35 times greater than the condition with the smallest surface damage. The largest value of surface roughness after electropolishing was higher than that of mechanical polishing due to excessive processing. On the other hand, the smallest value of surface roughness after electropolishing was 0.159 ㎛, which was improved by more than 80% compared to the previous mechanical polishing. Taken all results together, it is the most appropriate to perform electrolytic polishing with a sulfuric acid and phosphoric acid ratio of 3:7, an applied current density of 300 mA/cm2, and anelectrolytic polishing time of 5 minutes.

  • The cooling stage greatly affects the product quality in the injection molding process. The cooling system that minimizes temperature variance in the product surface will improve the quality and the productivity of products. The cooling circuit optimization problem that was once solved by a response surface method with 4 design variables. It took too much time for the optimization as an industrial design tool. It is desirable to reduce the optimization time. Therefore, we tried the back-propagation algorithm of artificial neural network(BPN) to find an optimum solution in the cooling circuit design in this research. We tried various ways to select training points for the BPN. The same optimum solution was obtained by applying the BPN with reduced number of training points by the fractional factorial design.

  • This paper reports on an investigation (using RSM with commercial CFD software) of the performance characteristics of the impeller in a centrifugal pump. Geometric parameters of vane plane development were defined with the meridional shape and frontal view of the impeller. The parameters are focused on the blade-angle distributions through the impeller in a fixed meridional geometry. For screening, a $2^k$ factorial design has been used to identify the important design parameters. The objective functions are defined as the total head rise and the total efficiency at the design flow-rate. From the $2^k$ factorial design results, it is found that the incidence angles and the exit blade angle are the most important parameters influencing the performance of the pump.

  • The purpose of this study is to discuss how to improve the maneuverability of lifting and diving for underwater vehicle's vertical motion. Therefore, to solve these problems, applied the 3-D numerical simulation, Taguchi's Design of Experiment (DOE), and intelligent parameter design methods, etc. We planned four steps as follows: firstly, we applied the 2-D flow simulation with NACA series, and then through the Taguchi's dynamic method to analyze the sensitivity (β). Secondly, take the data of pitching torque and total resistance from the Taguchi orthogonal array (L9), the ignal-to-noise ratio (SNR), and analysis each factorial contribution by ANOVA. Thirdly, used Radial Basis Function Network (RBFN) method to train the non-linear meta-modeling and found out the best factorial combination by Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO) and Weighted Percentage Reduction of Quality Loss (WPRQL). Finally, the application of the above methods gives the global optimum for multi-quality characteristics and the robust design configuration, including L/D is 9.4:1, the foreplane on the hull (Bow-2), and position of the sail is 0.25 Ls from the bow. The result shows that the total quality is improved by 86.03% in comparison with the original design.

  • Near Infrared transmittance Spectroscopy (NIRS) was used to evaluate and quantify the pharmaceutical active compounds. In the paper, taurine (2-Aminoethanesulfonic acid) was quantitatively analyzed in commercial pharmaceutical preparations. For calibration a central composite factorial design was used to determine concentrations of ingredients in reference samples. For the quantitative analysis of taurine, the most suitable data analysis method includes the calculation of second derivatives and a partial least squares regression (PLSR) model. By NIR spectrometry, combined with PLSR, the taurine concentration was successfully predicted with a relative standard error of prediction (SEP) lower than 1.04%.
