  • In this paper, we propose an Active Shape Model (ASM) and Lucas-Kanade (LK) optical flow-based feature extraction and analysis method for analyzing the emotional features from facial images. Considering the facial emotion feature regions are described by Facial Action Coding System, we construct the feature-related shape models based on the combination of landmarks and extract the LK optical flow vectors at each landmarks based on the centre pixels of motion vector window. The facial emotion features are modelled by the combination of the optical flow vectors and the emotional states of facial image can be estimated by the probabilistic estimation technique, such as Bayesian classifier. Also, we extract the optimal emotional features that are considered the high correlation between feature points and emotional states by using common spatial pattern (CSP) analysis in order to improvise the operational efficiency and accuracy of emotional feature extraction process.

  • A widely used single image-based 3D face reconstruction method, 3D morphable shape model, reconstructs an accurate 3D facial shape when 2D facial feature points are correctly extracted from an input face image. However, in the case that a user's cooperation is not available such as a real-time 3D face reconstruction system, this method can be vulnerable to the errors of automatic facial feature point extraction. In order to solve this problem, we automatically classify extracted facial feature points into two groups, erroneous and correct ones, and then reconstruct a 3D facial shape by using only the correctly extracted facial feature points. The experimental results showed that the 3D reconstruction performance of the proposed method was remarkably improved compared to that of the previous method which does not consider the errors of automatic facial feature point extraction.

  • Synthesizing speech and facial images is necessary for human interface that man and machine converse naturally as human do. The target of this paper is synthesizing the facial images. In synthesis of the facial images a three-dimensional (3-D) shape model of the face is used for realizating the facial expression variations and the lip shape variations. The various facial expressions and lip shapes harmonized with the syllables are synthesized by deforming the three-dimensional model on the basis of the facial muscular actions. Combications with the consonants and the vowels make 14.364 syllables. The vowels dominate most lip shapes but the consonants do a part of them. For determining the lip shapes, this paper investigates all the syllables and classifies the lip shapes pattern according to the vowels and the consonants. As the results, the lip shapes are classified into 8 patterns for the vowels and 2patterns for the consonants. In advance, the paper determines the synthesis rules for the classified lip shape patterns. This method permits us to obtain the natural facial image with the various facial expressions and lip shape patterns.

  • Make-up changes facial images. In particular, eyebrow make-up is a part of changing expression most easily and effectively. While color make-up is helpful to produce women's desired image with their favorite colors, eyebrow make-up is hidden actor to give a clear impression to others. Therefore, this study connected facial type which is an important factor deciding facial image with eyebrow, examined image of eyebrow make-up and that changed by facial types and aimed to be helpful in producing more effective facial image with eyebrow make-up considering one's facial type. Consequently, it was found that eyebrow make-up was a great factor in making better facial impression and image and complementing the weakness of facial type. h strong impression of facial type can be changed into soft shape or foolish shape in worse case depending on the types of eyebrow make-up. Eyebrow make-up shows charming image as angle of eyebrow is steep, heavy image as eyebrow is horizontal, cold image as eyebrow tail rises and simple and dull image as it lowers. Therefore, it is known that image of eyebrow make-up can be governed by several factors including angle and direction of eyebrow. Consequently, it is thought that most effective eyebrow make-up considers individual facial types, images of their eyes, noses and mouths and factors deciding angle, direction and colors of eyebrow.

  • In this paper, knowledge based text to facial sequence image system for interaction of lecturer and learner in cyber universities is studied. The system is defined by the synthesis of facial sequence image which is synchronized the lip according to the text information based on grammatical characteristic of hangul. For the implementation of the system, the transformation method that the text information is transformed into the phoneme code, the deformation rules of mouse shape which can be changed according to the code of phonemes, and the synthesis method of facial sequence image by using deformation rules of mouse shape are proposed. In the proposed method, all syllables of hangul are represented 10 principal mouse shape and 78 compound mouse shape according to the pronunciation characteristics of the basic consonants and vowels, and the characteristics of the articulation rules, respectively. To synthesize the real time facial sequence image able to realize the PC, the 88 mouth shape stored data base are used without the synthesis of mouse shape in each frame. To verify the validity of the proposed method the various synthesis of facial sequence image transformed from the text information is accomplished, and the system that can be applied the PC is implemented using the proposed method.

  • The human face has "expression" as an important visual factor in contrast with general objects. For this reason, cartoonists draw shadow that emphasizes facial shape and facial expression in order to convey atmosphere of scene and trait of character. This shadow should be considered when doing cartoon rendering for facial expression although it is not an physical shading. This paper proposes a cartoon rendering system for facial expression based on shading techniques of real cartoonist. First of all, we searched such techniques of cartoonist through variety of collected cartoon images and defined shadow templates according to character's facial expression to do cartoon rendering diffently. After that, we demonstrated cartoon rendering system of facial expression on the basis of survey result that effectively emphasizes facial shape and facial expression. Finally, we showed the usefulness through the user questionnaire.

  • The mandibuloplasty for the facial aesthetic reason has been the one of the most popular procedures in aesthetic facial bone surgery in East Asia. Most East Asian women prefer smaller-looking and smooth-shaped facial contour. Prominent mandible angle which are common in Asia would be the main problem for smooth facial contour. In addition, recently, the mandibular body and broad chin shape also are known to be remodeled in order to get the ideal smooth facial shape. However, mandibuloplasty is not that easy to cut because many patients has inward mandibular angle and the visual field in operation is limited. The aim of this trial is to try to provide the prefabricated cutting guide for the symmetric and appropriate mandibuloplasty with the surgeons. Preoperative computed tomography(CT) data were processed for the patient and computer simulation model was produced. Then, mandibuloplasty was done on the computer simulation screen. Based on this data, customized cutting guide was made. This prefabricated cutting guide was used in real mandibuloplasty bilaterally. Premade cutting guide for the mandibuloplasty based on the computer simulation turned out to be very successful in this patient. Individualized approach for each patient could be an ideal way to manage the patients in near future.

  • In this paper, we propose an study of the facial emotion recognition considering the dynamical variation of emotional state in facial image sequences. The proposed system consists of two main step: facial image based emotional feature extraction and emotional state classification/recognition. At first, we propose a method for extracting and analyzing the emotional feature region using a combination of Active Shape Model (ASM) and Facial Action Units (FAUs). And then, it is proposed that emotional state classification and recognition method based on Hidden Markov Model (HMM) type of dynamic Bayesian network. Also, we adopt a Harmony Search (HS) algorithm based heuristic optimization procedure in a parameter learning of HMM in order to classify the emotional state more accurately. By using all these methods, we construct the emotion recognition system based on variations of the dynamic facial image sequence and make an attempt at improvement of the recognition performance.
