Temperature distribution on the rake face and flank face in orthogonal turning with cutting tool of high speed steel is studied by using a finite element method and experiments. Experiments are carried out to verify the validity of the temperature measurement by using a thermoelectric couple junction imbedded in a cutting tool of high speed steel. Good agreement is obtained between the analytical results and the experimental ones for the temperature distributions on both the rake face and flank face of cutting tool with high speed steel. The analytical results show that the temperature on the top flank face of a tool is higher than it on the top rake face of the tool because of the difference of the friction velocity on each face of the tool.
In this paper, we propose a method to recognize the facial expressions by selecting face elements and finding its status. The face elements are selected by using image area segmentation method and the facial expression is decided by using the normal distribution of the change rate of the face elements. In order to recognize the proper facial expression, we have built database of facial expressions of 90 people and propose a method to decide one of the four expressions (happy, anger, stress, and sad). The proposed method has been simulated and verified by face element detection rate and facial expressions recognition rate.

A mechanical face seal is a tribo-element intended to control leakage of working fluid at the interface between a rotating shaft and its housing. Leakage of working fluid decreases drastically as the clearance of the mating seal faces gets smaller. But the very small seal clearance results in an increased reduction of seal life because of high wear and heat generation. Therefore, in the design of mechanical face seals a compromise between low leakage and acceptable seal life is important, and it presents a difficult and practical design problem. A fluid film or sealing dam geometry of the seal clearance affects seal lubrication performance very much, and thereby it is one of the main design considerations. In this study the Reynolds equation for the sealing dam of mechanical face seals is numerically analyzed, using the Galerkin finite element method, which is readily applied to various seal geometries. Film pressures of the sealing dam are analyzed, including the effects of the seal face coning and tilt. Then, lubrication performances of the seals, such as opening forces, restoring moments, leakage, and dynamic coefficients, are calculated, and they are compared to the results obtained by the narrow seal approximation.

This paper presents the results of a parametric study on the behavior of tunnel face reinforced with horizontal pipes. A three-dimensional finite element model was adopted in this study to capture the three-dimensional nature of tunnel face behavior under various boundary conditions. A parametric study was peformed on a wide range of boundary conditions with emphasis on the effect of reinforcing layouts on the deformation behavior of tunnel face. The results of analysis such as tunnel face deformation behavior under various conditions were thoroughly analyzed, and a database for the behavior of tunnel face under different reinforcing conditions was established for future development of a semi-empirical design/analysis method for the tunnel face reinforcing technique. The results indicated that there exits an optimum reinforcing layout for a given tunnel condition, which must be selected with due consideration of tunnel geometry and ground condition.

Heat distortion of the non-contacting mechanical face seal is affected by friction heat between primary seal and seal sheet. The fluid or gas in mechanical face seal maintains operating gap, cooling friction heat and lubricates at the face of seal. So we designed face of seal for inclined face. inclined face of seal improves fluid or gas flow at the face of seal and it increases circumferential velocity at outer radius of the seal so temperature of the seal is decreased by low heat transfer coefficient at there. In this paper, inclined face seal are analysed numerically using finite element method for proof improve inclined face seal performance. Angle of the incline face used for FEA is from 50$^{\circ}$to 90$^{\circ}$and for explaining the effects of inclined face in seal, we get temperature, face distortion, and stress in the seal with variable operating gap and rotating speeds. Result of analysis shows that angle of the incline face is 60$^{\circ}$come to good thermal distortion characteristics.
This study proposed a face region detection algorithm using fuzzy inference of pixel hue and intensity. The proposed algorithm is composed of light compensate and face detection. The light compensation process performs calibration for the change of light. The face detection process evaluates similarity by generating membership functions using as feature parameters hue and intensity calculated from 20 skin color models. From the extracted face region candidate, the eyes were detected with element C of color model CMY, and the mouth was detected with element Q of color model YIQ, the face region was detected based on the knowledge of an ordinary face. The result of experiment are conducted with frontal face color images of face as input images, the method detected the face region regardless of the position and size of face images.
This paper presents the contact thermal behaviors of mechanical seals depending on the contacting face geometry. Using the finite element analysis, the temperature distribution, thermal distortion and leakage have been analyzed as functions of sealing gap and rotating speed of the seal ring shaft. The FE results indicate that the inclined contacting face may be more effective and stable based on the results of thermal characteristic analysis if the seal ring has been designed with a same thermal capacity between conventional rectangular sealing faces and inclined seating surface of seal rings.
The aim of this work is the development of a 2D quadrilateral isoparametric finite element model, based on a layerwise approach, for the bending analysis of sandwich plates. The face sheets and the core are modeled individually using, respectively, the first order shear deformation theory and the third-order plate theory. The displacement continuity condition at the interfaces 'face sheets-core' is satisfied. The assumed natural strains method is introduced to avoid an eventual shear locking phenomenon. The developed element is a four-nodded isoparametric element with fifty two degrees-of-freedom (52 DOF). Each face sheet has only two rotational DOF per node and the core has nine DOF per node: six rotational degrees and three translation components which are common for the all sandwich layers. The performance of the proposed element model is assessed by six examples, considering symmetric/unsymmetric composite sandwich plates with different aspect ratios, loadings and boundary conditions. The numerical results obtained are compared with the analytical solutions and the numerical results obtained by other authors. The results indicate that the proposed element model is promising in terms of the accuracy and the convergence speed for both thin and thick plates.

In this paper, we proposed a method for face region extraction by skin-color hue, saturation and facial feature extraction in natural images. The proposed algorithm is composed of lighting correction and face detection process. In the lighting correction step, performing correction function for a lighting change. The face detection process extracts the area of skin color by calculating Euclidian distances to the input images using as characteristic vectors color and chroma in 20 skin color sample images. Eye detection using C element in the CMY color model and mouth detection using Q element in the YIQ color model for extracted candidate areas. Face area detected based on human face knowledge for extracted candidate areas. When an experiment was conducted with 10 natural images of face as input images, the method showed a face detection rate of 100%.
