  • In this study, the flow path width (Gap Size), which is the flow path of fluid, was selected differently among various factors that determine the Ccontrol Force of MR damper, and the change of Control Force was confirmed accordingly. For this purpose, two MR dampers with a Gap Size of 1.0mm and 1.5mm were fabricated, respectively, and dynamic load experiments were conducted according to changes in applied current and vibration conditions The experimental results showed that the minimum Control Force was 3.2 times higher than 1.5mm in the case of 1.0mm Gap Size, and the maximum Control Force was 2.3 times higher than 1.5mm in the case of 1.0mm Gap Size. In addition, the increased width of the Control Force according to applied current was 34N for Gap Size 1.0mm, and 12.7N for Gap Size 1.5mm. As the gap Size increased, the overall Control Force and the increase in the Control Force by the applied current decreased. Next, the dynamic range, which is a performance evaluation index of the semi-active Control device, was 2.3 on average under 1.0mm condition and 2.8 on average under 1.5mm condition, confirming the possibility of utilization as a semi-active Control device.

  • In this study, an experimental study on storage media for thermal energy storage system was conducted. For thermal energy storage medium, concrete has excellent thermal and mechanical properties and also has various advantages due to its low cost. In addition, the ultra-high strength concrete reinforced by steel fibers exhibits excellent durability against exposure to high temperatures due to its high toughness and high strength characteristics. Moreover, the high thermal conductivity of steel fibers has an advantageous effect on heat storage and heat dissipation. Therefore, to investigate the temperature distribution characteristics of ultra-high-strength concrete, concrete blocks were fabricated and a heating test was performed by applying high-temperature thermal cycles. The heat transfer pipe was buried in the center of the concrete block for heat transfer by heat fluid flow. In order to explore the temperature distribution characteristics according to different shapes of the heat transfer pipe, a round pipe and a longitudinal fin pipe were used. The temperature distribution at the differnent thermal cycles were analyzed, and the thermal energy and the cumulated thermal energy over time were calculated and analyzed for comparison based on test results.

  • Selective Laser Melting (SLM) technology is state-of-the-art additive manufacturing process technology that produces a three-dimensional structure by irradiating a laser on a fine metal powder to perform the fusion of a specific area and repeat this process. Owing to the characteristics of the additive manufacturing process, the melting phenomenon of the metal material by the laser has directionality depending on the process conditions, such as the irradiation direction of the laser and the build-up direction. For this reason, the composition of the metal material in the structure exhibits non-uniform characteristics. In this study, aluminum (AlSi10Mg) specimens were manufactured by applying SLM technology, and the material composition characteristics of the specimen were analyzed. The specimens were manufactured as cylinders by the build-up orientation of 0°, 45°, and 90°. The surface morphology of the specimen plane was analyzed optically. TEM analysis was performed on the core and the interface of the melting-pool inside the specimen generated by laser irradiation. The analysis results confirmed that there was a difference between the nano cell structure of the core and the interface of the melting-pool, and that the composition ratio of Si appeared higher at the interface than at the core of the cell.

  • This study examined the effects of stacking faults on the thermoelectric properties for n-type SiC semiconductors. Porous SiC semiconductors with 30~42 % porosity were fabricated by the heat treatment of pressed -SiC powder compacts at 1600~2100 ℃ for 20~120 min in an N2 atmosphere. XRD was performed to examine the stacking faults, lattice strain, and precise lattice parameters of the specimens. The porosity and surface area were analyzed, and SEM, TEM, and HRTEM were carried out to examine the microstructure. The electrical conductivity and the Seebeck coefficient were measured at 550~900 ℃ in an Ar atmosphere. The electrical conductivity increased with increasing heat treatment temperature and time, which might be due to an increase in carrier concentration and improvement in grain-to-grain connectivity. The Seebeck coefficients were negative due to nitrogen behaving as a donor, and their absolute values also increased with increasing heat treatment temperature and time. This might be due to a decrease in stacking fault density, i.e., a decrease in stacking fault density accompanied by grain growth and crystallite growth must have increased the phonon mean free path, enhancing the phonon-drag effect, leading to a larger Seebeck coefficient.

  • The seawater cooling system of naval ships is installed to remove the toxic substances generated by CBR (Chemical, Biological, and Radiological) warfare and reduce the infrared signature of naval ships from outside the hull. The dispersion range of the nozzle is determined according to the injection pressure of seawater and the nozzle type. Therefore, it is necessary to select the appropriate injection pressure and design the optimal nozzles to increase the seawater dispersion area and maximize the efficiency of the cooling system. In this study, the applying feasibility of 3D printing technology to produce an injection nozzle for the seawater cooling system was examined. To this end, the extruded plastic specimens were fabricated by 3D printing, and the physical properties of the specimens were estimated through tensile testing. After this, the strain and stress of the nozzle as a function of the pressure were simulated by applying the estimated results to the finite element analysis. The finite element analysis results showed that the nozzle remained within the elastic range at the optimal pressure. The nozzle was estimated to be structurally stable, and the possibility of this study was confirmed.

  • Fixed implant prostheses or removable partial dentures are common treatment for partially dentulous patients. Recently, an implant-assisted removable partial denture (IARPD) has been introduced and is widely used. In the case of removable partial dentures using implant attachment and surveyed fixed prostheses, the consideration about parallelism of insertion path between implants and surveyed fixed prostheses is an important factor for success of IARPDs. In this case, she complained of discomfort while using the mandibular removable partial denture. Thus, an IARPD using implant surveyed fixed prostheses was fabricated. Thereafter, more implants were placed by a digital guide surgery to have the same insertion path as the existing surveyed fixed prostheses. Locator attachments were installed to the left and right premolar implants, and the left molar was able to obtain support of the removable partial denture with healing abutment. The clinical results were satisfactory on the aspect of aesthetic and masticatory function.

  • Non-ferrous metals, widely used in the mechanical industry, are difficult to machine, particularly by drilling and tapping. Since non-ferrous metals have a strong tendency to adhere to the cutting tool, the tool life is greatly deteriorated. Diamond-like carbon (DLC) is one of the promising candidates to improve the performance and life of cutting tool due to their low frictional property. In this study, a sacrificial DLC layer is applied on the hard nitride coated drill tool to improve the durability. The DLC coatings are fabricated by controlling the acceleration voltage of the linear ion source in the range of 0.6~1.8 kV. As a result, the optimized hardness(20 GPa) and wear resistance(1.4 x 10-8 ㎣/N·m) were obtained at the 1.4 kV. Then, the optimized DLC coating is applied as an sacrificial layer on the hard nitride coating to evaluate the performance and life of cutting tool. The Vickers hardness of the composite coatings were similar to those of the nitride coatings (AlCrN, AlTiSiN), but the friction coefficients were significantly reduced to 0.13 compared to 0.63 of nitride coatings. The drilling test were performed on S55C plate using a drilling machine at rotation speed of 2,500 rpm and penetration rate of 0.25 m/rev. The result showed that the wear width of the composite coated drills were 200 % lower than those of the AlCrN, AlTiSiN coated drills. In addition, the cutting forces of the composite coated drills were 13 and 15 % lower than that of AlCrN, AlTiSiN coated drills, respectively, as it reduced the aluminum clogging. Finally, the application of the DLC sacrificial layer prevents initial chipping through its low friction property and improves drilling quality with efficient chip removal.

  • In this study, a local corrosion environment monitoring was conducted using steel box specimen fabricated to be the same as actual steel bridge members. The steel box specimen that obtained the same corrosion environment as a steel bridge was classified into the upper plate, bottom plate and web plate. Atmospheric corrosion monitoring sensors(ACM sensors) were installed in each corrosion monitoring member of a steel box specimen to measure the corrosion current and examine time of wetness for each monitoring member. The time of wetness and accumulated corrosion current of each monitoring member were calculated from the measured corrosion current using ACM sensors. The corrosion environment that appeared for each of the steel box members was evaluated from monitoring corrosion environment data as the corrosion current, time of wetness, mean corrosion depth of each monitoring member. Additionally, the atmospheric corrosion environment monitoring was also conducted to compare with the local corrosion environment of steel box members. From these local corrosion environment monitoring for the steel box specimen, the relationship between the relative corrosion environment and mean corrosion depth of each steel box member was examined.

  • We investigate the effect of phosphorous content on the microstructure and magnetic properties of Fe83.2Si5.33-0.33xB10.67-0.67xPxCu0.8 (x = 1-4 at.%) nanocrystalline soft magnetic alloys. The simultaneous addition of Cu and P to nanocrystalline alloys reportedly decreases the nanocrystalline size significantly, to 10-20 nm. In the P-containing nanocrystalline alloy, P atoms are distributed in an amorphous residual matrix, which suppresses grain growth, increases permeability, and decreases coercivity. In this study, nanocrystalline ribbons with a composition of Fe83.2Si5.33-0.33xB10.67-0.67xPxCu0.8 (x = 1-4 at.%) are fabricated by rapid quenching melt-spinning and thermal annealing. It is demonstrated that the addition of a small amount of P to the alloy improves the glass-forming ability and increases the resistance to undesirable Fex(B,P) crystallization. Among the alloys investigated in this work, an Fe83.2Si5B10P1Cu0.8 nanocrystalline ribbon annealed at 460℃ exhibits excellent soft-magnetic properties including low coercivity, low core loss, and high saturation magnetization. The uniform nanocrystallization of the Fe83.2Si5B10P1Cu0.8 alloy is confirmed by high-resolution transmission electron microscopy analysis.
