  • The odd-even effect of the alkyl chain length of rubbed polyimide Langmuir-Blodgett (LB) surfaces on the extrapolation length of 5CB has been successfully evaluated for the first time by measuring polar anchoring strength. The extrapolation length of 5CB for rubbed PI-LB surfaces with even-numbers is small compared with odd-numbers for alkyl chain lengths of greater than 7 carbons. The extrapolation length of 5CB on rubbed PI-LB surfaces with odd-numbers increases gradually as the temperature increases but tends to diverge near the clearing temperature (Tc=$35.3^{\circ}C$). The extrapolation length diverges because of rapidly decreasing surface order near $T_c$. We suggest that the polar anchoring strength on rubbed PI-LB surfaces with even-number is strong because of relatively high surface ordering caused by more crystalline surfaces. Finally, we conclude that the odd-even effects of the polar anchoring strength in NLCs are strongly related to the character of the polymer and observed clearly for long alkyl chain lengths.

  • In this study, we compared the threshold-voltage extraction methods of accumulation-type JLDG (junctionless double-gate) MOSFETs (metal-oxide semiconductor field-effect transistors). Threshold voltage is the most basic element of transistor design; therefore, accurate threshold-voltage extraction is the most important factor in integrated-circuit design. For this purpose, analytical potential distributions were obtained and diffusion-drift current equations for these potential distributions were used. There are the ${\phi}_{min}$ method, based on the physical concept; the linear extrapolation method; and the second and third derivative method from the $I_d-V_g$ relation. We observed that the threshold-voltages extracted using the maximum value of TD (third derivatives) and the ${\phi}_{min}$ method were the most reasonable in JLDG MOSFETs. In the case of 20 nm channel length or more, similar results were obtained for other methods, except for the linear extrapolation method. However, when the channel length is below 20 nm, only the ${\phi}_{min}$ method and the TD method reflected the short-channel effect.

  • The present paper proposes a novel dynamic system for hand gesture recognition. The approach involved is comprised of three main steps: detection, tracking and recognition. First, the gesture contour captured by a 2D-camera is detected by combining the three-frame difference method and skin-color elliptic boundary model. Then, the trajectory of the hand gesture is extracted via a gesture-tracking algorithm based on an occlusion-direction oriented linear extrapolation predictor, where the gesture coordinate in next frame is predicted by the judgment of current occlusion direction. Finally, to overcome the interference of insignificant trajectory segments, the longest common subsequence (LCS) is employed with the aid of velocity information. Besides, to tackle the subgesture problem, i.e., some gestures may also be a part of others, the most probable gesture category is identified through comparison of the relative LCS length of each gesture, i.e., the proportion between the LCS length and the total length of each template, rather than the length of LCS for each gesture. The gesture dataset for system performance test contains digits ranged from 0 to 9, and experimental results demonstrate the robustness and effectiveness of the proposed approach.

  • For the line search of a multi-variable optimization, an efficient algorithm is presented. The algorithm sequentially employs several polynomial approximations such as 2-point quadratic interpolation, 3-point cubic interpolation/extrapolation and 4-point cubic interpolation/extrapolation. The order of polynomial function is automatically increased for improving the accuracy of approximation. The method of approximation (interpolation or extrapolation) is automatically switched by checking the slope information of the sample points. Also, for selecting the initial step length along the descent vector, a new approach is presented. The performance of the proposed method is examined by solving typical test problems such as mathematical problems, mechanical design problems and dynamic response problems.

  • The importance of the bandwidth selection has been more emphasized than the kernel function selection for nonparametric frequency analysis since the interpolation is more reliable than the extrapolation method. However, when the extrapolation method is being applied(i.e. recurrence interval more than the length of data or extreme probabilities such as $200{\sim}500$ years), the selection of the kernel function is as important as the selection of the bandwidth. So far, the existing kernel functions have difficulties for extreme value estimations because the values extrapolated by kernel functions are either too small or too big. This paper suggests a Modified Cauchy kernel function that is suitable for both interpolation and extrapolation as an improvement.

  • The two dimensional problem of a layered tribological system(TiN/Steel) containing a vertical surface breaking crack and subject to rolling contact is considered in this study. Using finite elements and stress extrapolation method, a series of preliminary models are developed. Preliminary results indicate that the extrapolation technique is valid to determine Modes I and II stress intensity factors for cracks. In the case of TiN/Steel medium, KI and KII were determined for variations in crack length, layer thickness, and load location. The results show that KII reaches maximum values when the contact is adjacent to the crack where Mode I stresses are compressive. KII values decrease with decreased crack length and significantly decrease for reduced layer thickness.

  • By carrying out numerical analyses and model experiments, this paper presents the attenuation characterization of an L(0,2) guided ultrasonic wave propagating in a buried steel pipe. From this investigation, we first find that the L(0,2) mode has a better attenuation property. Second, it is shown from the numerical analyses that the attenuation increases with increases in the soil embedment length (0, 500, 1000, and 1500 mm) and degrees of saturation (0, 50, 99, and 100%). Third, it is also shown from the model experiment that the attenuation increases as the embedment lengths and soil moisture quantities (0, 10, 20, and 30 kg) increase. Finally, we find that an exponential extrapolation gives a better attenuation prediction because the extrapolation gives similar attenuation patterns between the numerical and experimental results.

  • In this paper, both feasible power gain and power added efficiency at the operating center frequency of 12 GHz are stressed to design a power FET with double-heterjunction structure. The variable parameters or the design are the unit gate width, the gate length, the doping density of AlGaAs, the AlGaAs thickness, the spacer thickness, the Al mole fraction, and the GaAs well thickness. The results of simulation for the FET with 1.mu.m gate length show that the power gain and the power added efficiency are 10.2 dB and 36.3% at 12GHz, respectively. An extrapolation of the relation between current gain and unilateral gain yields a 17 GHz cutoff frequency and 43GHz maximum frequency of oscillation. The calculation of the current versus voltage characteristics show that the output power of the device is about 0.62W.

  • In this experiments the operation of the Geiger-Mueller tube is investigated by measuring the relationship between the count rate and the applied voltages, The length and slope of the plateau are characteristic of the tube. In our experiments, the average plateau length of the tube is extend for about 100 [V] and the slope 0.017 [%/V]. For normal counting purposes the working voltage is usually selected at value about 50 volts larger than the threshold of the plateau. To investigate the absorption of beta particles by matter. We performed an absorption experiments by using the Al absorber and Sr-90 ($0.125{\mu}Ci$) beta source. The maximum range of the beta radiation can be determined by visual extrapolation of the curve after subtraction of the constant background-rate and the maximum beta energy 2.09 [MeV] can be calculated from the range using an experimental relation.
