  • While the construction of dismantling the old industrial complex and restoring the dismantled industrial site to its original natural environment the is underway. In this paper, we introduce a case of dismantling a turbine building which one of the a large steel frame structures in an old industrial complex by applying the progressive collapse method among the blasting demolition methods. We used a charge container that generates a metal jet to cut dismantling the turbine building. The thickness of the steel structure was adjusted to 30 mm or less by applying gouging, which was a method of digging deep grooves by gas and oxygen flames or arc thermal, in the part where the cutting thickness was thick in the blasting section. The total amount of charge used for the blasting of turbine building was 175 kg, 165 electronic detonators and 124 charge containers. As a result of the blasting demolition, the turbine building was collapsed precisely according to the estimated direction. The blasting demolition was completed without causing any damage to the surrounding facilities.

  • A locally damaged structure is a structure that cannot be reused due to having parts that have lost their structural function as a result of abnormal load across the interior or exterior of the structure. The causes of the abnormal load occurrences can be classified into natural disaster and artificial disaster. Locally damaged structures caused by this abnormal load have risk factors that may lead to the possibility of additional secondary collapses, so such structures require immediate and complete dismantling. The case presented in this study involves the application of explosive demolition to a steel truss structured bridge in the Philippines that was damaged due to construction failures and the hurricane. Although shaped charges were needed in explosive demolitions, difficulties in locally obtaining such material. So, we made a charge container to charging of emulsion explosive during the explosive demolition. The explosive demolition resulted in the vertical free fall of the mid-section of the bridge and the free fall rotating of the both end section of the bridge. The neighboring posts and bridge piers did not show signs of damages, while post-demolition fragmentation of removed parts was found to be satisfactory.

  • Soongeui complex stadium is a reinforced concrete frame structure composed of columns, slabs and beams. The stadium, however, is also a special structure because it has a tall tower of electronic display board and slabs inside its own structure which is different from the structures that had been demolished using blasting by then. Explosive demolition for the stadium was carried out from the left-hand side of the outfield stand to the right considering 2 rows of columns supporting the stand as a blasting unit. An overturning demolition method was applied to the tower of electronic display board. Water bags that played the role of multipurpose protection were applied to control the dust. As a result, the demolition project of the special structure of Soongeui complex stadium was judged to be a great success.

  • Safety concern is one of the most important parameters in the design of building demolition by explosive blasting, Accidents were sometimes reported due to the flying chips of fragmented materials In building demolition work in urban area. Laboratory experiments were performed to investigate the failure behavior of reinforced concrete pillars under blast loading and to develop an effective protection technique. Sixteen reinforced concrete pillars were constructed. The failure behavior and the flying chip velocities were observed by means of a high-speed camera. Protection scheme was designed and the effects of several protection materials were investigated. Two kinds of non-woven fabrics and wire net were tested as protection materials. The results showed that reinforcing bar was one of the important factors to determine specific charges, and that mesh size of wire net and tied-up method affected the protection of flying chips. Control of gas effects is also a key to the control of flying chips. It was recommended to use both wire net and non-woven fabrics as primary and secondary protection materials. Such protection scheme was successfully applied to the explosive demolition of apartment buildings.

  • Progressive collapse is generally defined as a local failure of structural members occurring due to abnormal load which results in the partial collapse or total collapse of a structure. Unlike progressive collapse, explosive demolition is a method of inducing the total collapse of structure by removing all or portion of structural members. In explosive demolition the partial collapse of the structural members can be controlled at appropriate time intervals by blasting, to induce the progressive collapse of the structure and control the collapse behavior. In this study, a nonlinear dynamic analysis was carried out in order to apply the progressive collapse process to explosive demolition design of the RC structure. The occurrence of progressive collapse of analytical models was examined according to the number of floors, the removed column height and span length. For models that resisted progressive collapse, progressive collapse resisting capacity was evaluated.

  • The blasting work to construct a subway in seoul, korea have often cased increased neighbor's complaints because of ground vibration. In order to prevent the demage to the stucture it was necessary to predict the level of blasting induced vibration and to determine the maximum charge weigh per delay with an allowable vibration level. The effect of blasting pattem, rock strength and different explosive on the blast-induced ground vibration was studied to determine the maximum charage weight per delay within a given vibration level. The blasting vibration equation from over 100 test data was obtained, V= K(D/W(equation omitted), where the values for n and K are estimated to be 1.7 to 1.5 and 48 to 138 respectively.

  • This study presents the influence of blasting-induced vibration on the adjacent structures in rocks of various RMR values. 3D finite element analysis was performed to simulate the behaviour of tunnel and adjacent structures during rock excavation. The blast loadings were evaluated from the blasting pressure which is depending on the type and amount of explosive charges. Influencing factors for the stability of adjacent structures and ground conditions were reviewed in terms of structural dimensions and RMR values. The stiffness and load of adjacent structures are modeled in the numerical analysis to Investigate blasting effects of the size of adjacent structures. The vibration velocity and maximum particle velocity was increase sharply when the RMR value changed from 30 to 50. The effect of particle velocity was minimized at the width of structure become 2 times of tunnel diameter.

  • Locally damaged structures caused by earthquake or extraordinary external forces have been required to rapidly be dismantled because of its possibility of additional collapses. Particularly, steel frame structures were demolished by the shaped charge blasting method. Recently a research suggested a shape charge blasting technique which uses bent-shaped charge holder of copper plate and emulsion explosive charge to cut thick steel plates. This study simulated the cutting performance of the bent-shaped charge holder with considering types of explosives, thickness of copper liner and stand-off distances using LS-DYNA software. The shape charge blasting test of a 25mm thickness steel plate were used to calibrate the input parameters of the numerical models. The penetration depth and penetration width were analysed with different types of explosives, thickness of copper liner and stand-off distances.

  • To review the appropriateness of current regulations on the simple explosive storage facility, the effects of internal explosion on the structural stability of the standard storage facility were analyzed by means of both FEM analyses and field experiments. As a result, it was found that the explosion-proof performance of the existing storage structure was not sufficient for 15 kg of emulsion-type explosive. Thus, an alternative method of splitting explosives was tested by conducting sympathetic detonation experiments. This method worked properly as expected, and the proper amount of splitted explosive was determined according to the test results. In addition, a storage structure with open ceiling was found to be very effective because explosion pressure was released so rapidly that the damage of the facility could be reduced significantly. Hence, such a structural pattern was proposed as a new design scheme for simple explosive storage facility.
