Aerial application using an unmanned agricultural helicopter became necessary for both labor saving and timely spraying. In the previous paper, a rotor system was developed and lift capability was evaluated. The experimental results were compared with simulated predictions using the CFD-ACE program. From the simulation, the relative velocity on the top surface of the blade airfoil increased, resulting in the pressure drop. The CFD analyses were revealed that a drag resistance on the leading edge of the airfoil, a wake at the trailing edge, and a positive pressure underneath the bottom surface were observed. As the results of the simulation, total lifts of 56.8, 74.4 and $95.0kg_f$ were obtained at the 6, 8 and $10^{\circ}$ of AAT (angle of attack), respectively. The simulation results agreed reasonably up to $10^{\circ}$ of AAT. However, at a greater AAT $(<12^{\circ})$ the simulated total lift continuously increased to $105kg_f$, comparing with a decreasing experimental total lift due to the lack of engine power. At a stiff angle of $18^{\circ}$ AAT, a wake was observed at the trailing edge of the airfoil. A rated operating condition determined from the previous paper was also verified through the simulation.
Numerical investigations are presented, which show that a back-flow flap can improve the dynamic stall characteristics of oscillating airfoils. The flap was able to weaken the stall vortex and therefore to reduce the peak in the pitching moment. This paper gives a brief insight into the method of function of a back-flow flap. Initial wind tunnel experiments were performed to define the structural requirements for a detailed experimental wind tunnel characterization. A structural integration concept and two different actuation mechanisms of a back-flow flap for a helicopter rotor blade are presented. First a piezoelectric actuation system was investigated, but the analytical model to estimate the performance showed that the displacement generated is too low to enable reliable operation. The seond actuation mechanism is based on magnetic forces to generate an impulse that initiates the opening of the flap. A concept based on two permanent magnets is further detailed and characterized, and this mechanism is shown to generate sufficient impulse for reliable operation in the wind tunnel.

Recently in order to extinguish the large scale of forest fire efficiently and rapidly the forest fire extinguishment equipment such as helicopters and vehicles has been mobilized. In this situation, the most consideration for the effective extinguishment is to understand the forest fire surrounding area and situation very well and arrange and manage the extinguishment equipment timely. In this paper, the client/serve-based forest fire extinguishment helicopter management system was constructed by integrating GPS(global positioning system) and GIS(geographic information system) technologies. This system manages and considers not only extinguishment equipment information such as helicopters and vehicles including manpower arrangement but also extinguishment environment information such as storing reservoir status and road situation and so on. For this, the real time tracking of helicopter location was first acquired through GPS technology then all the information about forest fire surrounding area was offered through the user-friendly interface of GIS concept. The result of constructing this system helps to extinguish a large scale of forest fire rapidly and effectively within shorter time then reduces physical damage and much manpower mobilization.

GNSS and ARS are the most common sensors in low-end UAVs. However, these sensors are vulnerable to built-in errors and cannot measure the body heading independently. The GNSS/INS cannot fully compensate the IMU errors in initial alignment process and rectilinear flights. For an unmanned helicopter, a magnetometer can be more useful than any other sensors to obtain heading information. However, the electric motor which drives small helicopter UAV keeps the magnetometer from reading the pure magnetotelluric vector. This paper shows the effects of electric motor on the magnetometer readings, and presents a method to compensate the effects. The results are verified with flight test data. The simulation and experimental results in this paper proves that aiding GNSS/INS with magnetometer increases observability and improves accuracy.

It is prerequisite that we have to fomulate the nonlinear mathematical modeling to design the guidance and control system of rotorcraft-based unmanned aerial vehicle using a small-scaled commercial helicopter. The small-scaled helicopters are very different from the full-scale helicopters in dynamic behavior such as high rotation speed and high frequency dynamic characteristics. In this paper, the formulation of the mathematical model of the small-scaled helicopter to minimize the complexity is presented by component and source build-up approach. It is linearized at the trim condition of hovering and forward flight and analyzed the flight modes. The results of this approach have general trends but a little difference. To verify this approach, it is necessary to compare this theoretical model with experimental results by system identification using flight test as a next research topic.

The current status of Canadian research on rotor-based actively controlled technologies for helicopters is reviewed in this paper. First, worldwide research in this field is overviewed to put Canadian research into context. Then, the unique hybrid control concept of Carleton University is described, along with its key element, the "stiffness control" concept. Next, the smart hybrid active rotor control system (SHARCS) projected's history and organization is presented, which aims to demonstrate the hybrid control concept in a wind tunnel test campaign. To support the activities of SHARCS, unique computational tools, novel experimental facilities and new know-how had to be developed in Canada, among them the state-of-the-art Carleton Whirl Tower facility or the ability to design and manufacture aeroelastically scaled helicopter rotors for wind tunnel testing. In the second half of the paper, details are provided on the current status of development on the three subsystems of SHARCS, i.e. that of the actively controlled tip, the actively controlled flap and the unique stiffness-control device, the active pitch link.

This paper describes the aeroelastic stability test of the small-scaled 'Next-Generation Blade(NRSB)' with NRSH (Next-Generation Hub System) and HCTH hingeless hub system in hover and forward flight conditions. Excitation tests of rotor system installed in GSRTS(General Small-scale Rotor Test System) at KARI(Korea Aerospace Research Institute) were tarried out to get lead-lag damping ratio of blades with flexures as hub flexure. MBA(Moving Block Analysis) technique was used for the estimation of lead-lag damping ratio. First, NRSB-1F blades with HCTH hub system, Then NRSB-1F with NRSH hub system were tested. Second, NRSB-2F blades with NRSH hub system were tested. Tests were done on the ground and in the wind tunnel according to the test conditions of hover and forward flight, respectively. Non-rotating natural frequencies, non-rotating damping ratios and rotating natural frequencies were showed similar level fir each cases. Estimated damping ratios of NRSB-1F, NRSB-2F with HCTH and NRSH were above 0.5%, and damping ratio increased by collective pitch angle increasement. Furthermore damping ratios of NRSB-2F were higher than damping ratios of NRSB-1F in high pitch angle. It was confirmed that the blade design for noise reduction would give observable improvement in aeroelastic stability compared to paddle blade and NRSB-1F design.

This paper presents an experimental study of the factors modulating the urgency perception of voice alarm generated by concatenative synthesizers. Four experiments were conducted using psycho-physical approach in which 112 participants made magnitude estimation for urgency perception of various voice alarm stimuli. Experiment 1 identified 6 acoustic and non-acoustic factors modulating the perceived urgency of synthesized voice alarm. Experiment 2, 3 and 4 quantified the relations between the objective changes in each of the quantifiable parameters and the subjective changes in urgency perception. This research has implications for the design and implementation of synthesized voice alarm systems where urgency mapping is required.

In this paper, the stabilization problem of the image stabilization system(ISS) that captures the image of an object on the ground by remote sensing is considered. The ISS should be stable under outer disturbance such as helicopter vibration for tracking line of sight. Although PID controllers are optimized for the system, disturbances cause the instability of the system. To minimize the effect of the disturbance, the time-delayed control method is used to compensate for uncertainties. Simulation studies are performed and experiments are conducted to confirm the simulation results. Performances of PID control and time-delayed control methods are compared.
