This paper describes a proposed performance criteria and evaluation procedures for transmission system planning in Korea. Performance criteria of the transmission system are expected to be used as a guideline for investment into a transmission network. Moreover, performance evaluation procedures, which are based on current practices and widely accepted theories, are suggested to achieve fair and acceptable results.
In many cases, an $\bar{X}$ control chart which is based on the performance variable is used in industrial fields. However, if the performance variable is too costly or impossible to measure and a less expensive surrogate variable is available, the process may be more efficiently controlled using surrogate variables. In this paper, we propose a model for the economic design of a VSI (Variable Sampling Interval) $\bar{X}$ control chart using a surrogate variable that is linearly correlated with the performance variable. The total average profit model is constructed, which involves the profit per cycle time, the cost of sampling and testing, the cost of detecting and eliminating an assignable cause, and the cost associated with production during out-of-control state. The VSI $\bar{X}$ control charts using surrogate variables are expected to be superior to the Shewhart FSI (Fixed Sampling Interval) $\bar{X}$ control charts using surrogate variables with respect to the expected profit per unit cycle time from economic viewpoint.
This paper outlines how the on-line performance monitoring system can be used to improve the efficiency and maintenance of the equipments. And a method of the heat rate allocation to each equipment was suggested to monitor the performance of combined cycle power plants. This calculates the expected heat rate of current conditions and compares it with actual values. Loss allocation in heat rate is reconciled by calculating the magnitude of the deficiency contributed by major components, such as the gas turbine, heat recovery steam generator, steam turbine and condenser. Expected power output is determined by a detailed model and correction curves of the plant. This simulation models are found to reproduce high accuracy in behavior of the cycle for various operating conditions, both in design and in off-design condition. Errors are lower than 2% in most cases.
PIP is an abbreviation of 'Performance Improvement Package', which is a package that can improve performance by applying some design changes to existing aircraft. Boeing provides PIP applicable to B777-200, and Airbus provides PIP applicable to A350-900 as standard. PIP provided by Boeing and Airbus is a separate task, but it is expected to reduce fuel consumption by reducing drag through aerodynamic improvements. The PIP applied to the A350-900 includes work such as increasing Winglet Height and re-twisting Outboard Wing. This study is to verify the effect of PIP application of the A350-900 aircraft and use it as basic data for economic analysis. The aerodynamic improvement studies and expected effects of the PIP application were examined, and the actual flight data of the PIP-applied and the non-applied aircraft were compared to confirm the PIP application effect. This paper provides empirical results for the aviation industry on the PIP application efficiency as a method of improving fuel efficiency and reducing carbon emission.
Since the COVID-19 pandemic, the importance of remote work has been emphasized, and new digital technologies are rapidly being developed. One such digital technology is the metaverse, which combines reality and virtual space to create an expanded digital world. The metaverse can provide online collaborative spaces that visualize and transmit information and data in real-time. When applied to construction sites, this technology is expected to enable more efficient and stable project management. However, research on construction metaverses, both domestically and internationally, is still inadequate. In this study, 16 influential factors for promoting the application of metaverses to the construction industry were identified through the initial stages of the system dynamics technique. These performance factors were classified into four categories: systemrelated factors for metaverse site construction, device-related factors, user-related factors, and construction site-related factors. It is expected that this study will promote research on the activation of Con-Metaverse by developing casual loop diagrams(CLD) to identify the relationship between each performance factor and constructing stock & flow diagrams(SFD) for simulations in future studies.
In this study, we empirically analyzed the impact of physical risks due to climate change on the soundness and operational performance of the financial industry by combining economics and climatology. Particularly, unlike previous studies, we employed the Seasonal-Trend decomposition using LOESS (STL) method to extract trends of climate-related risk variables and economic-financial variables, conducting a two-stage empirical analysis. In the first stage estimation, we found that the delinquency rate and the Bank for International Settlement (BIS) ratio of commercial banks have significant negative effects on the damage caused by natural disasters, frequency of heavy rainfall, average temperature, and number of typhoons. On the other hand, for insurance companies, the damage from natural disasters, frequency of heavy rainfall, frequency of heavy snowfall, and annual average temperature have significant negative effects on return on assets (ROA) and the risk-based capital ratio (RBC). In the second stage estimation, based on the first stage results, we predicted the soundness and operational performance indicators of commercial banks and insurance companies until 2035. According to the forecast results, the delinquency rate of commercial banks is expected to increase steadily until 2035 under assumption that recent years' trend continues until 2035. It indicates that banks' managerial risk can be seriously worsened from climate change. Also the BIS ratio is expected to decrease which also indicates weakening safety buffer against climate risks over time. Additionally, the ROA of insurance companies is expected to decrease, followed by an increase in the RBC, and then a subsequent decrease.
The main purpose of this study is to analyze the relationships between the R&D characteristics and R&D performance for Korean enterprises. We divided R&D performance into technological and business launching performance and analyzed four R&D characteristics' effect on the performance. The empirical analysis results can be summarized as follows: First, R&D characteristics of enterprises show a strong relationship with R&D performance in the case of R&D process control. Second, firm capability and information routine positively affect to technological performance at 0.1 significant level but not showing significance in the case of business launching performance. Third, managerial support negatively affects to technological performance but dose not show statistical significance. Its effect on business launching performance, however, shows positive and significant effect. This result is expected to be highly suggestive for establishing the effective R&D strategies of enterprises and also the relevant overseas marketing plan to support R&D planning.
In a recent article, Leon et al. lucidly explained the ideas of the Taguchi two-stage procedure for parameter design optimization, and proposed alternative performance measures called PerMIA to the signal-to-noise ratios. On the other hand, Box proposed an empirical approach to the problem based upon monotone transformations of the performance characteristic(y). This paper develops procedures for parameter design optimization under the assumptions that the expected loss(not necessarily a mean squared error loss) is increasing with respect to the variance of the error in y, and that the mean of y satisfies certain conditions of adjustability. It turns out that the variance of the error in y can play the role of PerMIA, and it is further shown that the derived PerMIA can be adapted to the Box empirical procedure for the minimization of the expected loss in the original metric.
From the analysis results of some as-built drawings in national roadway bridges in Korea, many bridge piers are expected to show complex shear-flexural behaviour under earthquakes. But the previous research works about the seismic evaluation of bridges considered flexural behaviour RC piers only. In addition, the past bridge design specifications in Korea didn't include limitation on the amount of longitudinal lap splices in the plastic hinge zone of piers. Thus a large majority of non-seismically designed bridge piers in Korea may have lap splices in plastic hinge zone. In this study, prototype pier was selected among existent bridge piers whose failure mode is expected to be complex shear-flexural mode. And then, full scale and 1/2 reduced scale model RC piers with various longitudinal lap splice details were constructed. From the quasi static test results on these model RC piers, the effect of longitudinal lap splices on the seismic performance of bridges piers was analyzed. And the seismic capacity of the non-seismically designed shear-flexural RC piers was evaluated.
