We have achieved very low threshold current densities with high light output powers for InGaAs/ GaAs surface-emitting lasers using a periodic gain active structure in which three quantum wells are inserted in two-wavelength-thick (2${\lambda}$ ) cavity. Air-post type devices with a diameter of 20~40${\mu}m$ exhibit a threshold current density of 380~410$A/cm^2$. Output power for a 40${\mu}m$ diameter device reaches over 11 mW. A simple theoretical calculation of the threshold and power performances indicates that the periodic gain structure has an advantage in achieving low threshold current density mainly due to the high coupling efficiency between gain medium and optical field. The deterioration of power, expected from the long cavity length of $2{\lambda}$, is negligible.
Lasing modes of laser-diode-pumped fiber grating lasers are analyzed by coupled-mode theory. First, a power series solution of the coupled-mode equations is derived under the assumption of an exponentially-decreasing longitudinal modal gain profile for a laser-diode-pumped grating section, followed by determination of the transfer matrix for such a section. Based on these results, an eigenvalue equation for oscillation is then derived and solved numerically for the lasing modes of uniform and phase-shifted fiber grating lasers. Comparisons made with the uniform-gain results indicate that, surprisingly, the lasing mode characteristics are not as significantly altered as might be expected in most cases, even for a highly nonuniform gain profile. In the case of a phase-shifted grating, the phase-shift position appears to have a much greater impact on determining the threshold gain, the modal field distribution, and the front-to-back output power ratio.
In recent research there has been intense interest in understanding how real option valuation (ROV) approaches might usefully complement conventional discounted cash flow (DCF) techniques. However, investment decision makers in a real world have been worried about adopting the ROV approaches mainly because of difficulty in technically understanding the theory of the ROV approaches as indicated by many researchers. With this difficulty in mind, we propose the opportunity cost model as another discrete-time model to value a deferral option. The main advantage of observing a real options value in terms of the opportunity cost concept is to provide a technique for practitioners to estimate a wide range of real options values without sticking to a financial option modelling. The fundamental ground for developing the opportunity cost model proposed in this paper lies in the work of dissecting the structure of the real options value into three categories: capital gain, expected opportunity loss, and expected opportunity gain. At the end of the paper, we will present a short illustrative example to demonstrate the applicability of the model.
This research devoted to develop an incubator that could make an optimum environment condition according to days of age for suckling pigs to decrease the mortality and improve the rate of the weight gain of the suckling pigs. Results obtained from this research summarized as follows: 1. Several experiments were carried out at the farm to find the effect of incubator developed for suckling pigs on weight gain by season. The total average gain of the weight of the treatment group was around 6∼22kg, and 6∼23kg higher than control group at the first experiment (April 19), at the second (July 30), and at the third (September 23), year of 2000 experiment, respectively. There were no significant differences ($\alpha$=5%) of the total weight gain among treatment groups. There was, however, a significant difference ($\alpha$=5%) of the total weight gain between the control and treatment groups and it was considered to be that the incubator had efficiency for weight gain of the suckling pigs. 2. The survival rate of the control group was 87% in the total sample number of 92, meanwhile, which of the experiment group was 98% in the total sample number of 50 suckling pigs. 3. Finally, economic analysis was executed for suckling pigs based on a farm size of breeding 500 sows. The results showed that a break-even point was around 9 months and the annual profit of ₩52,265,694 was expected after the break-even point.
In digital radiography, to improve the contrast of digital radiography image, the multi-scale nonlinear amplification algorithm based on unsharp masking is one of the major image enhancement algorithms. In this paper, we used the Laplacian pyramid to decompose a digital radiography(DR) image. In our simulation, the DR image was decomposed into seven layers and the coefficients of the each layer was amplified with nonlinear function. We also imported a noise containment algorithm to limit noise amplification. To enhance the contrast of image, we proposed a new adaptive non-linear gain amplification coefficients. As a result of having applied to some clinical data, a detail visibility was improved significantly without unacceptable noise boosting. Images that acquired with the proposed adaptive non-linear gain coefficients have shown superior quality to those that applied similar gain control method and expected to be accepted in the clinical applications.

In this paper, we proposed spectrum sensing using cooperative relay to solve problem of sensing performance degradation due to CPE (Customer-Primise equipments) which causes low SNR (signal-to-noise ratio) problem. This system model is expected that cooperative relay scheme guarantees the high sensing performance by its diversity gain. Based on these backgrounds, in this paper, we apply to cooperative relay scheme to the CR (cognitive radio) system, and simulation results show comparison of the sensing performance combining method EGC and MRC.

In order to overcome the influence of system stability and accuracy caused by uncertainty, estimation errors and external disturbances in Eight-Rotor MAV, L2 gain control method was proposed based on interval type II fuzzy neural network identification here. In this control strategy, interval type II fuzzy neural network is used to estimate the uncertainty and non-linearity factor of the dynamic system, the adaptive variable structure controller is applied to compensate the estimation errors of interval type II fuzzy neural network, and at last, L2 gain control method is employed to suppress the effect produced by external disturbance on system, which is expected to possess robustness for the uncertainty and non-linearity. Finally, the validity of the L2 gain control method based on interval type II fuzzy neural network identifier applied to the Eight-Rotor MAV attitude system has been verified by three prototy experiments.
We investigate theoretically the combined effect of fiber chromatic dispersion and self-phase modulation (SPM) on multi-channel subcarrier multiplexed (SCM) optical transmission systems in terms of the detected RF carrier power and SPM-induced power gain after transmission over single-mode fiber (SMF) links. According to the calculated power gain due to the SPM effect at the transmission distance of P3dB using the detected radio-frequency (RF) carrier power after photo-detection, the power gain is significantly degraded with large optical modulation index (OMI), small SCM channel spacing, and large fiber launching power because of the increased interaction between subcarrier channels. The nonlinear phase shift due to linear and nonlinear fiber characteristics is investigated to explain these results in detail. The numerical simulation results show that the OMI per SCM channel has to be smaller than 10 % for the fiber launching power of 10 dBm to guarantee prevention of SPM-induced power gain degradation below 0.5 dB for the SCM system with the channel spacing of 100 MHz. This result is expected to be utilized for the optical transmission systems using the SCM technology in future radio-over-fiber (RoF) networks.
Forty-eight crossbred heifers ($378.1{\pm}18$ kg) were used in a 56-d feeding trial (four pens per treatment in a randomised complete block design) to evaluate the influence of ionophore supplementation on growth performance, dietary energetics and carcass characteristics in finishing cattle during a period of heat stress. Heifers were fed a diet based on steam-flaked corn (2.22 Mcal $NE_m/kg$) with and without an ionophore. Treatments were: i) control, no ionophore; ii) 30 mg/kg monensin sodium (RUM30); iii) 20 mg/kg lasalocid sodium (BOV20), and iv) 30 mg/kg lasalocid sodium (BOV30). Both dry matter intake (DMI) and climatic variables were measured daily and the temperature humidity index (THI) was estimated. The maximum THI during the study averaged 93, while the minimum was 70 (THI average = $79.2{\pm}2.3$). Compared to controls, monensin supplementation did not influence average daily gain, the estimated NE value of the diet, or observed-to-expected DMI, but tended (p = 0.07) to increase (4.8%) gain to feed. Compared to controls, the group fed BOV30 increased ($p{\leq}0.03$) daily gain (11.8%), gain to feed (8.3%), net energy of the diet (5%), and observed-to-expected DMI (5.2%). Daily weight gain was greater (7.6%, p = 0.05) for heifers fed BOV30 than for heifers fed MON30. Otherwise, differences between the two treatments in DMI, gain to feed, and dietary NE were not statistically significant (p>0.11). Plotting weekly intakes versus THI, observed intake of controls was greater (p<0.05) at THI values ${\leq}77$ than ionophore groups. When THI values were greater than 79, DMI of control and MON30 were not different (p = 0.42), although less than that of groups fed lasalocid (p = 0.04). Variation in energy intake was lower (p>0.05) in the ionophores group (CV = 1.7%) than in the control group (CV = 4.5%). Inclusion of ionophores in the diet resulted in relatively minor changes in carcass characteristics. It is concluded that ionophore supplementation did not exacerbate the decline of DM intake in heat-stressed cattle fed a high-energy finishing diet; on the contrary, it stabilised feed intake and favoured feed efficiency. Ionophore supplementation reduced estimated maintenance coefficients around 10% in finishing cattle during a period of heat stress. This effect was greatest for heifers supplemented with 30 mg lasalocid/kg of diet.
The effects of supplementing Gamba grass (Andropogon gayanus) with varying levels of hay from cassava (Manihot esculenta Crantz) and dried cassava root chip on growth and diet digestibility were studied using local male goats with an average initial body weight of 14.0 kg. Thirty-two animals were allocated to a completely randomized $2{\times}2$ factorial design with eight animals per treatment. The factors were two levels of cassava hay (25% and 35% of an expected dry matter (DM) intake of 3% of body weight) and cassava root chips (0 or 1% of body weight) on an individual basis with grass offered ad libitum. Another four animals were assigned to a $4{\times}4$ Latin square design to study digestibility, and were given the same four diets as in the growth experiment. Total DM intake was significantly higher in the group fed diets with cassava hay and root while the DM intake of Gamba grass was not significantly different between treatments. The supplementation with cassava hay and root increased the apparent digestibility of DM, organic matter and N and resulted in a higher N-retention. The apparent digestibility of neutral detergent fibre and acid detergent fiber was not affected significantly. The average daily gain of animals fed diets supplemented with both cassava hay and root was significantly higher than for the animals supplemented with cassava hay alone. The highest daily gain recorded was 70 g/day. In conclusion, supplementing a basal diet of Gamba grass with cassava hay and root chips improved DM intake, digestibility, N-retention and weight gain. In order to minimize the waste of cassava hay, the inclusion level of cassava hay can be recommended to be 25% of expected DM intake, which would give acceptable intake and growth performance when cassava root is included in the diet.
