The Expansive Properties of leaf tobacco by Nitrogen Gas (질소기체를 이용한 잎담배 팽화특성)

  • The expansive properties of leaf tobacco by nitrogen gas was investigated with cut tobacco AB3O-1, CD3L-1(NC82). Major factors for the best expansion of the tobacco by the gas were an impregnated pressure and expansion temperature. The expansion rate for AB3O-1 and CD3L-1 at 250℃, 750kg/cm2 was 96.6%, 99.4% respectively. The shred size and fineness index at 96.6% of expansion rate for AB3O-1 was almost the same as at 58.3% for CD3L-1. The time reaching at equilibrium moisture under of RH 57% was 36hr in non-treated leaf tobacco, but it was 20hr in expanded tobacco. We confirmed that total sugar contents of leaf tobacco by the expansion was decreased with 9.3∼10.9%. Total alkaloid was decreased with 17.5∼21.1% and ether extracts was declined with 4.9∼9.3%. These results suggest that the expansion method of leaf tobacco by nitrogen gas is a useful method without any serious environmental troubles. Changes in Physico-Chemical Properties of Burley Leaf Tobacco by Expansion Process. (팽화처리에 의한 Burley종의 물리화학적 특성변화)

  • This study was carried out to compare the change physico-chemical properties in the 10 grades of Burley leaf tobacco expanded by $CO_2$. The filling capacity of AB3T was increased from 5.44cc/g to 9.52cc/g with the expansion rate 75.0% and that of CD3W was increased from 5.57cc/g to 10.16cc/g with the expansion rate 82.4%. But the rate of cut tobacco longer than 3.36 mm decreased from 77.2% to 49.9% and from 67.3% to 41.2% in grade B1T and C1W, respectively. The contents of nicotine and total volatile base in the of expanded cut tobacco decreased 11.9% and 10.4% respectively. The contents of onganic acids, except oxalic and palmitic acid, essential oil, amino acids, nicotine, tar and ammonia contents in the cigarette smoke decreased by expansion procecs. These results suggest that expanded tobacco was very useful to make less irritative cigarettes.

Characterization of Expanded Tobacco Lamina Tissues by Freeze Drying (냉동건조에 의한 잎담배 팽화특성)

  • The freeze drying rate was investigated under various conditions such as pressure and moisture contents in order to establish the optimum condition for expansion of the culled flue cured tobacco lamina. The optimal pressure in the chamber to maintain the heat and mass transfer was about 0.8torr, When the moisture contents of sample was 50-60%, expanding rate was the optimum condition and the rate was 67-76%. As the thickness of the sample layers was increased, drying-rate was decreased conversely and this result seemed to be due to decline of heat and mass transfer coefficients. Differences with the position of its stalk were also observed in drying rate, and low stalk position leaves of 5 and 3 was the fastest. Key words : freeze drying, Popping, expansion tobacco.

  • A study of expanding tobacco includes the steps of adjusting the moisture content of cut tobacco, without the use of exogenous impregnants by contacting the filler with a high velocity gaseous medium at elevated temperature such that heat is rapidly and substantially uniformly transferred from the medium to the filler for a total contact time sufficient to expand the tobacco leaves. Study is disclosed for drying and expanding cut tobacco by introducing the tobacco into an elongated tubular shaped conduit through which steam high temperature 150-35$0^{\circ}C$ and high velocity above the 18m1sec, super steam is recycled. moisture content of shreded tobacco leaves, immediately before treatment within the range of from 10% to 24% and, most preferably, within the range of from 18% to 21%. Expanding rate showed 70% in NC -82(B.3) and 42% in Burley -21(B.1) which is produced in 1993 under this condition. When expanding tobacco expanded tobacco did not change significally, but they were decreased at 27$0^{\circ}C$ very largely. The curtailment of cost price and physical and chemical properties of various items were improved in cigarettes.   • This study was carried out to investigate the effect of storage period on the physico-chemical properties of tobacco leaves expanded by $CO_2$. The flue-cured and burley tobacco leaves produced from 1996 to 1999 were processed, and stored for that year or 3 years in processing plant. As compared with 1996 crop, the expanded rate of flue-cured tobacco leaves in 1999 crop was higher approximately 18%, while that of burley was higher about 10%. The filling capacity of cigarettes was decreased as storage time became shorter, but the combustibility was improved. The rate of large particles (over 3.36mm) of expanded tobacco showed decreasing tendency as the storage period became longer. The change rate of chemical contents in tobacco leaves between before and after expansion had no significant difference among corp years. The tar and CO contents of cigarettes smoke were reduced in the case of flue-cured tobacco leaves as storage time became shorter, while they were slightly increased in the case of burley tobacco leaves. The ammonia content of burley leaves was decreased remarkably in 1996 and 1999 crop.

Effect of Super Heated Steam Treatment on Physical Property and Smoke Component of Burley Cut Tobacco (과열증기처리에 의한 Burley종 각초의 물리성 및 연기성분 변화에 관한 연구)

  • This study was carried out to investigate the effects of super heated steam on the physical and chemical changes of burley cut tobacco. Total sugar, total alkaloid, ether extracts, crude ash, total nitrogen and pH for leaf chemical constituents were analyzed. Filling power and fineness index for physical properties, and carbonyl compounds, phenol compounds, amonia, pH, hydrogen cyanide nicotine, carbon monoxide, total volatile base and tar for smoke components were also analyzed. The cut tobacco treated with super heated steam showed significant decrease in total sugar and total alkaloid. The filling power of the sample treated with the super heated steam system was increased abruptly when heated at over 250℃. The fineness index showed similar tendency to that of common toast method. Super heated steam treatment slightly decreased carbonyl compounds, phenol compounds, hydrogen cyanide, nicotine, carbon monoxide and tar in the tobacco. Especially the decrease of ammonia was the most remarkable. The pH of smoke was a little different compared with that in the common toast. The sensory test results showed that, compared to the common conveyer moving system, the tobacco treated with super heated steam system brought out more roasted flavor, lowered impact, irritation, and sting, further improved aftertaste, and lowered bitterness. The super heated steam treatment method used in the studies is expected to give better filling power, mild taste and toasted odor of tobacco than that of the common method for toast treatment. Changes in Physical and Mechanical Properties of Freon-Adsorbed and Heat - Treated Leaf Tobacco (Freon Gas흡착 및 열처리에 의한 담배조직의 물리적, 역학적 특성변화연구)

  • In the tobacco industry, it is important to study the change of mechanical property occurring the expansion process. The purpose of this study is to attain basic data for development of a tobacco expansion method. 1 . Freon gas was adsorbed to tobacco under various conditions of temperature, relative humidity and pressure, and then the amount of freon gas adsorbed was analyzed by GC. Freon adsorption rate of Burley 21 was more than that of By104 at the same condition and about 17 $\pm$ 1% moisture content produced better adsorption rate. 2. Freon adsorbed sample were heated to about $150^{circ}C\;to\;230^{\circ}C$ in a drying oven and recycle duct form about 2 to 30 seconds, and then the change of mechanical property were measured. Heated leaf was damaged when the tissue was pressed by the force of above $0.5x10^8dyn/cm^2$. The optimum condition of no damage of the sample was below the temperature of 15$0^{\circ}C$ and heating time of 10 seconds. It was more economically advantages to treated sample in a recycle duct than to be in a drying oven. By this process, the specific volume of the heated sample was increased from 80 to 110 percent in comparison to that of untreated sample.

Physico-chemical Properties of leaf tobacco by expansion processes. (잎담배의 팽화방법에 따른 팽화율 및 내용성분 특성)

  • Flue-cured tobaccos(cv. NC82, grade AB3O-1) expanded by super steam, volatile organic solvents(tricuorofluoromethane, propane), carbon dioxide, nitrogen, and by freeze-drying were examined for their physico-chemical properties. The expanding rate by using the organic solvents or carbon dioxide at the impregnated pressure was 70% or more, whereas the rate by super steam and freeze-drying was 49.4 and 42.9%, respectively. The contents of total sugar, alkaloid and ether extracts of the expanded tobacco by organic solvents or carbondioxide were decreased to 27.6, 20% or more, and 13%, respectively, when compared to non-expanded one. The contents of citric acid of the tobacco expanded by using trichlorofluoromethane and carbon dioxide were increased to 19.1, 14.0%, respectively. Linoleic acid in the tobacco expanded by super steam or trichlorofluoromethane was also increased to 17.3%, but malonic acid in the tobacco expanded by super steam was 18.5% less than that in the non-expanded one. Nineteen essential oil among 22 assayed in this experiment were decreased in the expanded tobaccos. Key words : expanding method, tobacco, physico-chemical properties.

  • The purpose of this study is to improve the method and the apparatus for recovering freon-11 used in a process for increasing the filling capacity of tobacco. The first, the theoretical recovery rate of freon-11 was calculated from vapour pressure and thermodynamic properties of freon-11. The second, the usability of theoretical data was evaluated by the comparison between the theoretical data and the experimental data from the pilot plant. The result obtained under the present experiment condition was quite similar to the rate at 15kg/cm2 and 5$^{\circ}C$, but the theoretical data evaluated were 0.1 to 0.3% lower than the experimental data at 20 to 25kg/cm2 and 5$^{\circ}C$. The recovery rate of the cooling and the compression system was about 95% with freon-11 used in this system and that with freon-11 concentrate of waste gas was about 3 to 3.6% at 20 to 25kg/cm2 and 5$^{\circ}C$.

A geographical study of the Korean Tobacoo forming region (韓國 煙草載培地域의 地理學的 硏究)

  • The purpose of this study is to clarify how the Korean tobacco farming region has been geographically formed by natural and cultural environments, and to examine and cultural environments, and to examine whether it can be recognized as a major part of agricultultural regions. The questions asked in this study are associated with the spatial diffusion of tobacco cultivation, the patterns and processes of the farming region from 1900 to 1960, and the regional characteristics of the concentrated farming area since 1960. The study is inductively approached and most data used were collected from old records and field works. The delineation of the tobacco farming region was derived by applying the concept of the uniform region. Tobacco was introduced through Japan during the years of Kwang Hae Kun (1616-1622). According to the old records, three places, Waekwan, Dongrae, and Ulsan, were the first tobacco raising areas. In the 1700's the well-known tobacco farming regions were scattered all around the nation in places like Jinan, Samdeung, Seongcheon, Gangdong, Yeongweol and Yeongyang. This distributon pattern suggests that tobacco farming in Korea developed spatially along main traffic routes before the 1700's. Untill the 1920's the pattern of tobacco regions was relatively static. Since the 1920's, it has shown a pattern of concentration in the Choongbuk province, where the new highly productive yellow tobacco has been introduced. It was not until the 1960's that yellow tobacco instead of the native variety came to be cultivated all over the country. In the 1960's, the tobacco farming region tended to be concentrated and localized in north western Choongnam, northern Cheonbuk, Choongbuk, and Kyeongbuk including Cheongsong, Andong, and Yeongyang. Since 1970, tobacco production has declined in some of the former major areas of cultivation in terms of its density, while there have appeared highly concentrated areas in Cheongsong and Andong, centered around Yeongyand. There has also emerged a secondary major concentrated area along the coast including such places as Kochang, Yeongkwang and Mooan. The appearance of the Yeongyang tobacco area as the most important core region can be described as follows; at first this area has the disadvantage of being in competition with other places for selling cash crops besides tobacco, because it is located in a mountain zone and it is far from the major metropolises of Seoul and Pusan. Thus has been formed the farming mentality that agricultural management makes the most profit on farming tobacco because tobacco is stable in price and selling routes. As a result of this longstanding belief, these areas (Yeongyang, Cheongsong and Andong) have developed into tobacco concentrated regions. Finally, the tobacco concentrated regions of Korea have changed through time. The factors affecting this change have been the kind of tobacco grown, the monopoly system, agricultural techniques and the expansion of arable land through the clearing of slopes. In conclusion, the research indicates that the localized and concentrated patterns of tobacco cultivation are geographically typical. Thus, recognition of tobacco farming region is important to understanding the agricultural region of Korea as a whole.
