  • When crystalline rocks are heated, thermal stress is induced by the differences in thermal expansion of the mineral composition and its orientation. In this study, high temperature uniaxial compressive tests were carried out for Iksan and Hwangdeung granites to study the deformation and failure behavior due to thermal loading. Compressive and tensile strength of Hwangdeung granite for 20$0^{\circ}C$ decreased to 80% and 82% of the room temperature strength, and those of Iksan granite decreased to 90% and 92% for 20$0^{\circ}C$, respectively. Elastic moduli of both granites were decreased sharply at the stress level of 80% of ultimate failure strength. Elastic moduli of both granites by variation of temperature at 50% of ultimate failure strength was decreased as almost linearly.

  • For an analysis of nonlinear dynamic behavior in carbon nanotube(CNT) an electrostatic force of CNT was investigated. The boundary condition in the CNT was assumed to clamped-clamped case at both ends. This type of CNT is widely used as micro and nano-sensors. For larger gaps in between sensor and electrode the van der Waals force can be ignored. The electrostatic force can be expressed as linear form using Taylor series. However, the first term of the series expansion was investigated here. The electrostatic force From this study we can conclude that for larger gaps the electrostatic force play an important role in determining the deflections as well as the pull-in voltage of simply supported switches.

  • This paper deals with behaviors of PSC-Beam bridges according to continuity of spans. To analyze the long-term behavior of bridges, an analytical model which can simulate the effects of creep, the shrinkage of concrete, and the cracking of concrete slabs in the negative moment regions is introduced. To consider the different material properties across the sectional depth, the layer approach in which a section is divided into imaginary concrete and steel layers is adopted. The element stiffness matrix is constructed according to the assumed displacement field formulation, and the creep and shrinkage effects of concrete are considered in accordance with the first-order algorithm based on the expansion of the creep compliance. Correlation studies between analytical and experimental results are conducted with the objective to establish the validity of the proposed model. Besides, many uncertainties related to the continuity of spans are analyzed to minimize deck cracking at interior supports.

  • The idea of $CO_2$ sequestration in the ocean is proposed to be an effective mitigation strategy to counteract potential global warming due to the greenhouse effect Therefore, in the present study, calculations of the dissolution behavior of $CO_2$ hydrate when liquid carbon dioxide is released at 1,000m and 1,500m in depth are performed. The results show the liquid $CO_2$ injected in the ocean becomes $CO_2$ bubble at between 350m and 500m in depth, and the injection from a moving ship is a more effective method of dissolution than through a fixed pipeline. It so also noted that the ultimate plume generated from $CO_2$ bubbles repeats expansion and shrinking due to the peel ins from a fixed pipeline.

  • This study investigated the behavior of a non-isothermal $CO_2$ bubble formed through a leak process from a high-pressure source in a deep sea. Isenthalpic interpretation was employed to predict the state of the bubble just after the leak. Three modes of mass loss from the rising bubble were demonstrated: dissolution induced by mass transfer, condensation by heat transfer and phase separation by pressure decrease. A graphical interpretation of the last mode was provided in the pressure-enthalpy diagram. A threshold pressure (17.12 bar) was identified below which the last mode was no longer present. The second mode was as effective as the first for a bubble formed in deep water, leading to faster mass loss. To the contrary, only the first mode was active for a bubble formed in a shallow region. The third mode was insignificant for all cases.

  • This study revealed the behavior of droplets formed through leak process in deep water. There was a threshold depth named the universal attraction depth (UAD). Droplets rose upward in the zone below the UAD called the rising zone, and settled down in the zone above the UAD called the settling zone. Three mass loss modes were identified and formulated: dissolution induced by mass transfer, condensation by heat transfer and phase separation by pressure decrease. The first two were active for the settling zone, and all the three were effective for the rising zone. In consequence, the life time of the droplets in the rising zone was far shorter than that of the droplets in the settling zone.

  • The aims of this study are to evaluate the application on the stress-strain behavior of granite Soil using Lade's double work hardening constitutive model based on the theories of elasticity and plasticity. From two different sites of construction work, two disturbed and compacted weathered granite samples which are different in partical size and degree of weathering respectively were obtained. The specimen employed were sampled at Iksan and Pochon in order to predict the constitutive model. Using the computer program based on the regression analysis, 11 soil parameters for the model were determined from the simple tests such as an isotropic compression-expansion test and a series of drained conventional triaxial tests. In conclusion, it is shown that Lade's double work hardening model gives the good applicability for processing of stress-strain, work-hardening, work-softening and soil dilatancy. Therefore, this model in its present form is applicable to the compacted decomposed granite soil.

  • Based on the study of soil water dynamics, this study is to suggest an advanced stochastic soil water model for future study for drought application. One distinguishable remark of this study is the derivation of soil water dynamic controling equation for 3-stage loss functions in order to understand the temporal behaviour of soil water with reaction to the precipitation. In terms of modeling, a model with rather simpler structure can be applied to regenerate the key characteristics of soil water behavior, and especially the probabilistic solution of the derived soil water dynamic equation can be helpful to provide better and clearer understanding of soil water behavior. Moreover, this study will be the future cornerstone of applying to more realistic phenomenon such as drought management.

  • This paper deals with the analysis for column shortening of RC frame structure considering the construction sequences. The time-dependent effects of concrete are taken into consideration in this study to simulate the actual structural behavior. The stiffness matrix of a beam element is derived on the bases of the layer approach, dividing a section with imaginary layers. Creep and shrinkage strains at each layer are calculated by using the first-order algorithm based on the expansion of creep compliance. Finally, the correlation studies with the purpose of analyzing the time-dependent behavior of building structure are conducted using the analytical model proposed in this study.
