  • Simple and highly efficient droplet merging method is proposed, which enables two nanoliter or picoliter droplets to merge regularly in a straight microchannel. Using a cross channel with inflows of one oil phase through the main channel and two water phases through the side channels, two droplets of different sizes can be generated alternatingly in accordance with flow rate difference of the water phases. It is shown that for a fixed oil phase flow rate, the flow rate of one water phase required for alternating droplet generation increases linearly with the flow rate of another water phase. By this method, the droplets are merged with 100 % efficiency without any additional driving forces.

  • We have developed two absolute evaluation technology of inductor using current transformer (CT) comparator. One is the method that the reactance of inductor is obtained by analysing the equivalent circuit of CT with inductor connected to series at secondary terminal of CT. The other is the method that the reactance of inductor is obtained by comparing phase displacement of current flowing on inductor by using CT comparator. These technologies have the advantage to apply up to rated current and voltage of inductor. The method was applied to inductors under test in the range of $100 {\mu}H{\sim}1\;H$. The inductance of the inductor under test obtained in this study are consistent with those measured by LCR meter using the same inductor within an expanded uncertainty (k = 2) in the overall range of inductance.

  • Conventional time-scale modification methods have the problem that as the modification rate gets higher the time-scale modified speech signal becomes less intelligible, because they ignore the effect of articulation rate on speech characteristics. Results of research on speech perception show that the timing information of transient portions of a speech signal plays an important role in discriminating among different speech sounds. Inspired by this fact, we propose a novel scheme for modifying the time-scale of speech. In the proposed scheme, the timing information of the transient portions of speech is preserved, while the steady portions of speech are compressed or expanded somewhat excessively for maintaining overall time-scale change. In order to identify the transient and steady portions of a speech signal, we employ a simple method using LPC cepstral distance between neighboring frames. The result of the subjective preference test indicates that the proposed method produces performance superior to that of the conventional SOLA method, especially for very fast playback case.

  • A variety of reconstruction methods has been developed to convert a set of scattered points generated from real models into explicit forms, such as polygonal meshes, parametric or implicit surfaces. In this paper, we present a method to construct multi-scale implicit surfaces from scattered points using multiscale kernels based on kernel and multi-resolution analysis theories. Our approach differs from other methods in that multi-scale reconstruction can be done without additional manipulation on input data, calculated functions support level of detail representation, and it can be naturally expanded for n-dimensional data. The method also works well with point-sets that are noisy or not uniformly distributed. We show features and performances of the proposed method via experimental results for various data sets.

  • In this paper, a spline-type divided-difference interpolation technique is proposed to efficiently evaluate the impedance matrix elements in the MoM analysis of layered medium problems. This method is combined with the fast computational method of the basis-expanded and tested dyadic Green's functions (expressed in the spectral domain integrals) in a recent literature. For the sake of its validity, the proposed method is applied to analyze the characteristics of a microstrip gap discontinuity, a microstrip filter, and an aperture coupled patch antenna. Numerical results obtained by this approach are in good agreement with those of other approaches.

  • The procedure for the stress and displacement analysis of realistic viscoelastic materials by time domain boundary element method(BEM) has been discussed. The fundamental solutions and stress kernels have been obtained using the elastic-viscoelastic correspondence principle. The relaxation function is expanded in a sum of exponentials and the transformed fundamental solutions and stress kernels are inverted numerically into real time space. The proposed procedure requires a small computational effort and it is applicable in time domain boundary element analysis of realistic viscoelastic problems. Numerical results of example problem show the effectiveness and applicability of the proposed method.

  • This paper proposes a measurement method for the surface shape of micro-parts by using an atomic force microscope(AFM). To this end, two techniques are presented: First, the measurement range is expanded by using an image matching method based on correlation coefficients. To account for the inaccuracy of the coarse stage implemented in AFM, the image matching technique is applied to two neighboring images intentionally overlapped with each other. Second, a method to measure the shape of relatively large specimen is proposed that utilizes the inherent trigger mechanism due to the atomic force. The proposed methods are proved effective through a series of experiments.

  • We are experienced one case of \ulcornerinchu" method operation for chronic thoracic empyema with bronchopleural fistula. A 30-years old male was admitted to our hospital because of right thoracic empyema. In spite of pleural tube drainage, the right entire lung was poorly expanded. The right upper lobectomy and decortication for visceral side of empyema peel were done but expansion of right middle and lower lobe was not enough to fill the pleural space remained Extraperiosteal detachment without performing thoracoplasty was done as the method proposed by Kinchu. The patient recovered without significant problem and the good expansion of remained lung with acceptable pulmonary function was obtained.ined.

  • In this study, a general perturbation method is presented to reanalysis dynamic response of base-isolated systems. The perturbation is expanded to general order and which provide the formulation of perturbed solutions. in which eigensolutions of non-modified system are treated as unperturbed solutions. The accuracy of present method is tested using a 2-DOF system with isolator, where the stiffness and damping coefficients of isolator are changed, respectively, The reanalyzed eigensolutions and response using perturbed solutions are successfully approached to exact ones after just first perturbation. Supposing the practical criterion as ${\pm}5%$ error, the modification range of -50%~30% from original system can be allowed for the first order perturbation. Using higher order solutions, the applicable range will be wide.

  • The ab initio effective valence shell Hamiltonian method, based on quasidegenerate many-body perturbation theory, is generalized to calculate molecular properties as well as the valence state energies which have previously been determined for atoms and small molecules. The procedure requires the evaluation of effective operator for each molecular property. Effective operators are perturbatively expanded in powers of correlation and contain contributions from excitations outside of the multireference valence space. To demonstrate the validity of this method, calculations for dipole moments of several low lying valence states of OH, $OH^+$, and $OH^-$ to first order in the correlations have been performed and compared with configuration interaction calculations.
