  • The objective of this study was to assess spatial variation of the target water quality criteria and excess rate in Nakdong river basin after the Total Maximum Daily Loads (TMDLs). For this, 41 total water quality monitoring stations were selected BOD and T-P data were collected from 2003 to 2019. The annual average water quality of BOD and T-P were calculated and compared with the target water quality for each stations by peroid. As a result of analyzing the BOD, Kumho A, Nakbon F, Namgang D, Miryang B, Wicheon B and Hoecheon A exceeded the target water quality criteria for two consecutive times. For T-P, Nakbon N, Naeseung B, Miryang A, Hwanggang A and Hoecheon A exceeded the target water quality criteria twice in a row. In the case of T-P, the target water quality excess rate was relatively low after the TMDLs implementation compared to before the TMDLs implementation. However, in the case of BOD, there was no difference in the target water quality excess rate before and after TMDLs. As a result, the overall annual average water quality shows a decreasing trend, but it is necessary to manage the water quality for the Nakdong river basin that exceed the target water quality.

  • The interaction among wave, seabed and marine structure is an important issue in coastal engineering as well as geotechnical engineering. Understanding variations of stresses and pore water pressures generated in seabed induced by waves is important for civil engineers who have to design the foundation for various marine structures and verify the instability of seabed. In the matters on seabed instability, particularly, in the case of wave-induced liquefaction of seabed, it is turned out there are two different mechanisms through previous studies. These are caused by the transient or oscillatory nature and the residual or progressive nature of excess pore water pressure generated in seabed, respectively. In this study, it is analyzed dynamic characteristics of soils sampled in seabed around the port of Kochi, Japan, through the dynamic triaxial tests and the residual excess pore water pressure in the seabed induced by seepage force of wave. In addition, the calculated residual excess pore water pressures were compared with the field data observed in the port of Kochi.

  • Since 2014, the Korean government has begun distributing LPG pipelines and LPG tankers to mountainous or island areas where it is difficult to open urban gas supply chains. When installing LPG supply facilities at village level and county level, it supplied consumers with 10 times higher quasi-low pressure (25 kPa to 100 kPa) than conventional gas supply pressure, increasing the risk of gas accident. Due to the pressure that is 10 times higher than the conventional gas supply pressure, large amounts of gas are released at a faster rate when leaked. In order to secure safety of quasi-low-pressure gas pipes, excess flow valves for quasi-low-pressure gas pipes are not developed and are not supplied in Korea. Therefore, Korea Gas Safety Corporation is investigating the performance standards and products of the excess flow valves in order to localize the excess flow valves.

  • Objectives: The coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic led to increased mortality rates. To assess this impact, this ecological study aimed to estimate the excess death counts in southern Iran. Methods: The study obtained weekly death counts by linking the National Death Registry and Medical Care Monitoring Center repositories. The P-score was initially estimated using a simple method that involved calculating the difference between the observed and expected death counts. The interrupted time series analysis was then used to calculate the mean relative risk (RR) of death during the first year of the pandemic. Results: Our study found that there were 5571 excess deaths from all causes (P-score=33.29%) during the first year of the COVID-19 pandemic, with 48.03% of these deaths directly related to COVID-19. The pandemic was found to increase the risk of death from all causes (RR, 1.26; 95% confidence interval [CI], 1.19 to 1.33), as well as in specific age groups such as those aged 35-49 (RR, 1.21; 95% CI, 1.12 to 1.32), 50-64 (RR, 1.38; 95% CI, 1.28 to 1.49), and ≥65 (RR, 1.29; 95% CI, 1.12 to 1.32) years old. Furthermore, there was an increased risk of death from cardiovascular diseases (RR, 1.17; 95% CI, 1.11 to 1.22). Conclusions: There was a 26% increase in the death count in southern Iran during the COVID-19 pandemic. More than half of these excess deaths were not directly related to COVID-19, but rather other causes, with cardiovascular diseases being a major contributor.

  • Objectives In this study, we divided Korean asthma patients into excess syndrome or deficiency syndrome groups according to clinical phenotype. Genetic analysis was conducted to investigate the association of exonic SNPs in the CD46 gene polymorphism with the clinical phenotype based on the differentiation syndrome of the bronchial asthma patients. Methods There were 95 healthy patients (control group) and 53 asthma patients. (The deficiency syndrome group included 24 and the excess syndrome group 29). We searched the exonic areas of the CD46 gene in the NCBI website SNPs with <0.01 minor allele frequency (MAF) and <0.01 heterozygosity. We finally selected two SNPs: rs138843816, Ser13Phe and rs7144, 3’-UTR. Hardy-Weinberg equilibrium was calculated using SNPStats. Results There were significant differences in the codominant 1 model and the dominant model between the healthy group and the asthma group. There were significant differences between deficiency syndrome group and the excess syndrome group in the genotype frequencies and in the codominant 1 model, the dominant model, and the log-additive model. The allele frequency of rs7144C showed a significant difference between the deficiency syndrome group and the excess syndrome group. Two-SNP haplotype analysis showed a significant difference in frequency in the deficiency syndrome group and in the excess syndrome group. There were significant differences between the healthy group and the excess syndrome group in the codominant 1 model, the dominant model, and the log-additive model. The frequency of the rs7144 C allele exhibited a significant difference in the demonstration. SNP haplotype analysis between the healthy group and the excess syndrome group showed a significant difference in the frequency of the CT haplotype and the CC haplotype. Conclusions The results indicate that two CD46 SNPs (rs138843816, Ser13Phe and rs7144, 3′–UTR) might be associated with the symptomatic excess syndrome in Korean asthma patients.

  • In the course of anaerobic storage of excess sludge, odors due to chemicals such as hydrogen sulfide are produced. These odors cause many problems. Many methods have been developed to eliminate odors, but all current methods are not only costly, but also largely ineffective. In this paper, we investigate the process of transformation of sludge microorganism cultures through intense aeration under nutrient-poor conditions, in terms of the selective adjustment and control of microorganism culture. The aerated sludge is subsequently returned to the adjusting pool, where the microorganisms inhibit odors, thus the excess sludge itself will act as an odor inhibitor. The process can be verified in terms of viability, in that the degradation capacity of the sludge was maintained after the intensely-aerated sludge was returned to the treatment system.

  • In current animal production in Japan, a large surplus of nitrogen and phosphorus is given to animals as their feed which are mostly imported from outside of our own country. Today, an excess of nitrogen and phosphorus from animal manure has been spread out of the area of animal production and the surroundings. These components have become the major reason for eutrophication of ground, surface and inland water. Nutritional studies for the reduction of nitrogen and phosphorus from animal waste has been done by many researchers. The reduction of excess protein in animal feed and the supplementation of deficient essential amino acids to feed have a possibility to increase the biological value of feed and to reduce nitrogen excretion, especially, via urine. The use of phytase activity to degrade phytate and to release utilizable inorganic phosphorus make it possible to cut an excess supply of feed additive inorganic phosphorus and to reduce phosphorus excretion from animal waste.

  • Excess enthalpy flame propagating an porous inert medium, which recirculate exhaust heat to the upstream cold mixture, is theoretically analyzed. Using the activation-energy asymptotics, the flame structure is divided into the thin reaction and the gas-phase preheat zone, as is traditionally done. Ahead and behind of the two, there exist an outer preheat zone, where heat is convectively transferred from solid to gas, and a downstream re-equilibrium zone, where thermal equilibrium between phases is established. Asymptotic solutions of species and energy equations in each zone are obtained and then matched to each other, and finally the mass burning rate is obtained as a function of the flame propagation velocity with respect to the solid phase and physical properties of gas and solid.
