How Does the Presentation Mode of Product Information Affect Product Evaluation? : The Mediation of Construal Level and the Moderation of Response Time

  • The purpose of this study was to examine how the presentation mode (sequential- vs. simultaneous-mode) of information influences its evaluation. Three experiments revealed the interaction effect between the presentation mode and the valence of the product information. When respondents read about the positive aspects of the product, the evaluation was higher in the simultaneous presentation mode than in the sequential presentation mode. For negative product information, respondents' evaluation was higher in the sequential presentation mode than in the simultaneous presentation mode. The simultaneous presentation mode intensified the impact of the information valence on evaluation. This study proposed that the sequential and the simultaneous presentation modes prime high and low construal levels, respectively. The mediation analysis provides support for such a prediction. Finally, the mediating effect of construal levels in evaluation was shown to disappear when respondents focused on the product information for a longer duration, while the mediation effect remained when the response time was short.

  • This paper is a part of the development on the safe navigation model of tugs and barges in Korea waters. desk-top tug-barge simulator is to train the crew of tugs and barges, especially tugs' crew. It is connected with steering and engine telegraph console and winch control console, and can describe three types of operation mode for a tug-barge working unit, towing mode, side by side and push mode. It can also record and assess each simulation run. The evaluation module can confirm the result of a finished simulation run and help trainees to find and correct their faults, and it is composed of result evaluation and process evaluation.

  • This paper considers a performance analysis of set-top box (STB) power saving schemes. STB converts the signal into content which is then displayed on the television (TV) screen, and there are typically two operation modes: on mode and stand-by mode. The total energy consumption (TEC), a typical measure of power consumption of STB, is defined by the sum of power consumption in each mode. Recently there are some works of STB power saving schemes that transit STB operation modes efficiently, and the mode transition time point of those schemes can be different. Thus it is required to develop a performance evaluation method that reflects mode transition time points of each scheme to get TEC correctly. This paper proposes a performance evaluation method for STB power consumption using Poisson process to consider the mode transition time point. By modeling STB mode transitions as events of Poisson process, the average time duration of STB mode is computed and accordingly the effect of power saving is evaluated. The performance evaluation result shows that the proposed method achieves 1 to 19% improvement in power consumption compared with a conventional performance evaluation method.

  • In order to minimize radiation exposure and secure diagnostic value images during CT examination of the head of children, the usefulness of volume axial mode is evaluated through comparison and analysis of exposure dose and images of volume axial mode, high pitch mode, and helical mode. Image evaluation and dose evaluation were performed in CT high pitch mode, helical mode, and volume axial mode for infants under the age of 1 according to the voltages of 70, 80, and 100 kVp tubes. The image evaluation was conducted by comparing image quality by setting ROI for each image, calculating SNR and CNR, using ONE-WAY (ANOVA) to evaluated statistical significance, and cross-examining the dose evaluation using DLP values displayed in the Dose Report. When inspected using volume axial mode, DLP values were generally low, and SNR and CNR values differed by ROI and kVp. When volume axial mode evaluated the quality of the image compared to other scan modes, the difference is not uniform. For the reason, certain modes are not considered excellent, but the exposure dose was reduced the most in terms of dose. In addition, the point that the volume axial mode can be examined at its original location, short scanning time and needless of table movement is useful for CT tests for children under 1 year of age with high radiation sensitivity.

  • This paper proposes a performance evaluation method for power consumption of set-top box (STB) stand-by mode transition schemes. A stand-by mode transition scheme characterizes the timing of mode transition. The timing of mode transition affects the duration of stand-by mode operation, and the power consumptions of STB as well. Recently a fast stand-by mode transition scheme (FMT) has been proposed based on user input for selecting the device to be connected to TV. In this paper, we evaluate power consumption of FMT and a conventional mode transition scheme. For the computation of the duration of stand-by mode operation, the user input events are modeled as Poisson process. Simulation results based on the modeling reveals that the proposed scheme is more effective in power saving than the conventional scheme by up to 30%.

  • The Durability cycle is very important for the success of vehicle testing to evaluate Retarder. The purpose of this study is to develop the durability mode on performance evaluation of retarder. Commercial vehicles are equipped with an auxiliary braking device in order to increase safety. A typical device for retarder depends heavily on imports. Domestic development has now become an urgent task. But, No state has an evaluation method for performance evaluation of the auxiliary braking device. We presented the durability test mode for the performance evaluation of the retarder was verified experimentally.

  • In this pater, a method of strength evaluation applying fracture mechanics in adhesively bonded joints of A1/A1 materials was investigated. Various adhesively bonded joints of double-cantilever beam with a interfacial crack in its adhesive layer were prepared for the fracture toughness test of comprehensive mixed mode conditions from nearly pure mode I to mode II. The experiment of fracture toughness was carried out under various mixed mode conditions with an interfacial crack and critical energy release rate, Gc by the experimental measurements of compliances was determined. From the results, fracture toughness on mixed mode with an interfacial crack is well characterized by strain energy release rate and a method of strength evaluation by the fracture toughness in adhesively bonded joints of A1/A1 materials was discussed.

Mode-by-mode evaluation of structural systems using a bandpass-HHT filtering approach

  • This paper presents an improved version of the Hilbert-Huang transform (HHT) for the modal evaluation of structural systems or signals. In this improved HHT, a well-designed bandpass filter is used as preprocessing to separate and determine each mode of the signal for solving the inherent modemixing problem in HHT (i.e., empirical mode decomposition, EMD, associated with the Hilbert transform). A screening process is then applied to remove undesired intrinsic mode functions (IMFs) derived from the EMD of the signal's mode. A "best" IMF is selected in each screening process that utilizes the orthogonalization coefficient between the signal's mode and its IMFs. Through mode-by-mode signal filtering, parameters such as the modal frequency can be evaluated accurately when compared to the theoretical value. Time history of the identified modal frequency is available. Numerical results prove the efficiency of the proposed approach, showing relative errors 1.40%, 2.06%, and 1.46%, respectively, for the test cases of a benchmark structure in the lab, a simulated time-varying structural system, and of a linear superimposed cosine waves.

  • In a large diameter piping system, high frequency energy can produce excessive noise, high vibration, and failures of thermo-well, instrumentation, and attached small-bore piping. High frequency energy is generated by flow induced vibration like vortex shedding in orifices and valves. Once this energy is generated, amplification may occur from acoustical and/or structural resonances, resulting in high amplitude vibration and noise. At low frequencies, pipe vibration occurs laterally along the pipe's length, but at higher frequencies, the pipe shell wall vibrates radially across its cross-section. The simple beam analogy which is based on the beam mode vibration can not be applied to evaluate shell mode vibration. ASME OM3 recommends that the stress be measured directly by strain gauge and be evaluated according to the fatigue curves of the piping material. This Paper discusses the excitation and amplification mechanism relevant to high frequency energy generation in piping system, the monitoring method of the shell mode vibration in ASME OM3, the evaluation method generally used in the industry. Finally this paper presents the stress evaluation of the cavitating venturi down stream piping, where high frequency shell mode vibrations were observed during the operation.

Embodied Energy and $CO_2$ Emissions Evaluation for Freight Transport

  • This study aim at demonstrating the environmental performance of freight transport of the rail and road mode through an indicator of embodied energy and $CO_2$ emissions. Using the concept of LCA, the scope of evaluation includes energy production, supply chain activity and operation. The results of embodied energy and $CO_2$ emissions are normalized by means of traffic volume. The results shown that embodied $CO_2$ emissions road mode is 607.07 $gCO_2-eq./tkm$ and 284.67 $gCO_2-eq./tkm$ for road and rail mode, respectively. This number reveals that road mode is 2.1 times larger than rail mode. The results also indicate that the main contribution of $CO_2$ emission from road mode is in the operation stage, which accounts for 70%; however, it is the construction and supply chain stage that accounts for over 50% of the emission of rail mode.
