  • This paper presents a new method for improving teaching aids with the design and development of a chemistry education platform - the Mixed Reality (MR) Chemistry Lab. Our system provides a new educational experience in which students can simulate a chemistry experiment in a virtual lab and interact with objects using Oculus Helmet-Mounted Displays (HMD) and hand controller devices. The proposed system aims to familiarize students with experimental procedures and safety knowledge before conducting actual experiments. Moreover, students will be able to observe microscopic atomic structure models in three dimensions. Our research also includes a five-part, quantitative evaluation system user tests perform using a quantitative questionnaire consisting of five items, including hardware equipment, immersion, education, interaction sense of control, and degree of difficulty. The evaluation results confirm that this system will be helpful to the educational experience of conducting chemistry experiments with scientific evaluation methods, and the proposed system is also expected to have a broad range of applications in many other subjects.

  • The purpose of this study was to develop torso patterns according to the somatotype and thus to contribute to the ready-made industry. Classification of the somatotypes was based on each individual's lateral and frontal view and development of torso patterns according to the somatotype was to center on the darts. The subjects in this study were female college students of 18 to 24 year old. This study was carried out by the following procedures: 1. Classification of the somatotypes was based on each individual's lateral and frontal view. The somatotypes were classified into 18 types. 2. Eighteen subjects who had prominent somatic characteristics and average mea- surements were chosen. 3. Subjects were clothed and a sensory evaluation was carried out. 4. Experiments of alterations were carried out. The quantities of revision of torso patterns due to the difference of somatotypes were measured through these. These method were due to the items of the sensory evaluation. 5. By obtaining the results of the sensory evaluation and experiments of alterations, the torso patterns according to the somatotypes were developed. These were inputted to the CAD System and compared with one another. 6. Grading of the torso pattern according to each somatotype was carried out and thus a file of torso patterns was made according to the somatotypes.

  • Numerous devices exist for reducing or eliminating seismic damage to structures. These include passive dampers, semi-active dampers, and active control devices. The performance of structural systems with these devices has often been evaluated using numerical simulations. Experiments on structural systems with these devices, particularly at large-scale, are lacking. This paper describes a real-time hybrid testing facility that has been developed at the Lehigh University NEES Equipment Site. The facility enables real-time large-scale experiments to be performed on structural systems with rate-dependent devices, thereby permitting a more complete evaluation of the seismic performance of the devices and their effectiveness in seismic hazard reduction. The hardware and integrated control architecture for hybrid testing developed at the facility are presented. An application involving the use of passive elastomeric dampers in a three story moment resisting frame subjected to earthquake ground motions is presented. The experiment focused on a test structure consisting of the damper and diagonal bracing, which was coupled to a nonlinear analytical model of the remaining part of the structure (i.e., the moment resisting frame). A tracking indictor is used to track the actuator ability to achieve the command displacement during a test, enabling the quality of the test results to be assessed. An extension of the testbed to the real-time hybrid testing of smart structures with semi-active dampers is described.

  • The development of overload management systems for distribution transformers offers new opportunities for improving the reliability of distribution systems. It allows network planners to optimize the system resource utilization and investment cost. Such an improvement in the flexibility of the distribution network is only possible if the operator has more accurate knowledge of the realtime conditions of distribution transformers. In this paper, we present an improved overload decision system for distribution transformers using realtime monitoring data. Our study can be categorized into two parts: (a) improvement in the criteria for judging the overload conditions of distribution transformers and (b) development of an overload evaluation system using realtime monitoring data. In order to determine the overload criteria, overload experiments are performed on sample transformers; the results of these experiments are used to define the relationship between the transformer overload and the increase in the top-oil temperature. To verify the accuracy of the experimental results, field tests are performed using specially manufactured transformers, the loads and top-oil temperatures of which can be measured. For arriving at online overload decisions, we propose methods whereby the measured load curve can be converted into an overload characteristic curve and the overload time can be calculated for any load condition. The developed system is able to evaluate the overload for individual distribution transformers and calculate the losses using realtime monitoring data.

  • This study tried to investigate the difference of the legibility in different age groups (young and old) with same near visual acuity and to provide preliminary guidelines for the text sizes in the pesticides products based on the legibility experiments. To achieve the objective, legibility evaluation experiments were conducted to test the effects of different age(20s, 50-60s), gender, font type(thick gothic-type and fine gothic-type), thickness (plain and bold), and number of syllables(2 and 3 syllables) in the same near visual acuity(0.6). The results showed that legibility 50s was higher than 20s. And 20s are appealed higher discomfort than 50s. Considering these experimental results, it was recommended that the 14 pt or larger characters (100% readable size) should be used the important information such as toxicity, and the minimum character size was 7 pt (50% readable size) for other information.

  • In this paper, criteria for better selection of a supercapacitor through EIS (Electrochemical Impedance Spectroscopy) experiments are presented. The performance characteristics of a supercapacitor are thoroughly analyzed in terms of losses and available energy to select the optimal product. The validity of the proposed criteria is demonstrated through the computer simulations and experiments on a fuel cell vehicle using a supercapacitor module with the FTP-72 urban dynamometer driving schedule.

  • In this paper, the main emphasis and focus will be to study and illuminate the nature of Plastic Energy Dissipation (PED) in variety of polymers. This PED term represents the heat generated during the irreversible deformation of a polymer solid. A series of experiments for various polymers have been conducted in direct measurement method and indirect evaluation method - the incremental strain stress relaxation ((ISSR) method. The experimental evidence to relate the stress relaxation and the sensible temperature rise were revealed by the series of direct method experiments.

  • In this study, we concerned the steel cap and head part arrangement of PHC pile structure to complement existing construction process which have the defects such as highly hazardous circumstance for safety concerns and retard a term of works. The steel cap developed for supplement the stiffness between extend foundation and contact section of PHC pile that is based on structural theory. The experiments have been performed to evaluate the characteristics of behavior between head part of PHC pile using steel cap and extend foundation.
