  • Investigated was the effectiveness of a constructed wetland system on water quality in Hwa-Ong estruarin reservoir, located in Hwasung-Gun, Kyunggi-Do. Procedures for estimation of pollutant loading from watershed and required area for natural systems, and simulation of corresponding reservoir water quality were reviewed. Generally, simulated reservoir water quality was within the reasonable range, and about 15% of total polder farmland was required to meet the agricultural water quality standards. The model was applied based on the current loading condition without additional treatment systems. Wetland system is an ecologically sound treatment system. Therefore, natural systems can be an alternative measure for water quality improvement in polder projects. The area for natural systems was estimated using literature value which might be acceptable at the planning stage. However, pilot system and its experimental data are requisite for large scale field application. WASP5 was proved to be a useful and versatile model, and its application to estuarine reservoir water quality simulation was thought to be appropriate.

  • This paper describes the applications of the SCS TR-20 hydrologic model for simula- tion of hourly inflow rates from sixty-six ungaged tributaries and subareas between the Naju station and the estuarin dam at the Yongsan River Basin. The model was tested for the ungaged conditions with fifteen storm events at Naju station. Hourly simulated run- off data were compared with the observed, and the results showed less correlationships between the two data than those from TANK model. The coefficients of correlation ranged from 0.74 to 0.87. The curve numbers and time of concentration were defined from topographic dta for each of sixty-six tributaries for the estuarine dam and used for TR-20 applications. The results were within an acceptable range of errors in simulating the inflow fluctuations for the flood forecasting at the estuarine dam.

  • In order to clarify the seasonal variation of the residual current and the material transportation process in Hiroshima Bay, JAPAN, the real-time simulation of residual current and particle tracking by using the Euler-Lagrange model were carried out. The calculated tidal current, water temperature, and salinity showed good agreement with the observed ones. The residual currents showed a southward flow pattern at the upper layer, and a northward flow pattern at the lower layer. The flow structure of the residual current in Hiroshima Bay is an estuarine circulation affected by density flow and wind driven current. The residual current plays an important role of material transportation in the bay.

  • Water circulation plays a crucial role in regulating the salinity of estuaries, which is essential for the survival of estuarine organisms. Changes in freshwater inflows or sea level can have significant impacts on the distribution and abundance of species within these ecosystems. To better understand these dynamics, this paper presents a study of water circulation and salinity distribution in Seomjin River estuary using the Finite Volume Coastal Ocean Model (FVCOM) numerical model. An extreme scenario was simulated to assess the potential impact of tidal currents and river flow discharge on circulation and salinity distribution. The results of this study have important implications for managing estuarine ecosystems and conserving their associated biodiversity.
