  • This study was conducted to investigate the influence of light condition before and after chilling treatment started at different times of a day on the survival and physiological responses of cucumber seedlings grown in a greenhouse. Percent survival of cucumber seedling exposed to a chilling temperature of 2$^{\circ}C$ for 48 hours varied considerably depending upon the initiation time of chilling treatment. Seedlings exposed to chilling treatment from 7:00 o clock, the end of a dark period, showed considerably lower % survival of 30.6% as compared to 90.2% in those exposed to the same treatment starting from 18:00 o clock, the end of a photoperiod. This difference in % survival was found to be closely associated with content of photosynthetic assimilates in seedlings. Relative amount of electrolyte leakage was 57.1% in seedlings chilled from 7:00 o clock and 25.9% in seedlings chilled from 18:00 o clock. Among the ions found in the electrolyte leakage, content of $K^{+}$ was the greatest, followed by that of N $a^{+}$, $Mg^{+}$ and $Ca^{+2}$. Light illumination for 2 hours or longer shortly before chilling treatment during the dark period was effective in increasing % survival of seedlings, probably because of increased photosynthetic assimilates in seedlings. Light illumination during a 48 hour chilling treatment at 3$^{\circ}C$ significantly reduced % survival to 43.3% as compared to 92.0% in seedlings kept continuously in darkness.ess.s.

  • The basic catalyst 1-benzyl-3-methyl-imidazolium hexafluoroantimonate (BMH) was synthesized and analyzed by FT-IR and 1H-NMR. A crystalized biphenyl-based epoxy was synthesized by using tetramethyl biphenol (TMBP) and epichlorohdrine. In order to consider the curing tendency of the synthesized BMH, the mass ratio was changed to 0.5, 1.0, 2.0 wt.% under heated conditions and the curing tendency was analyzed by differential scanning calorimeter (DSC). As a result, the BMH catalyst showed a fast curing result in the stepwise heating pr℃ess of the biphenol-A epoxy and the cationic polymer. From these results, the BMH catalyst showed excellent thermal stability as a potential heat curing catalyst. In addition, we considered the application possibility of epoxy molding compound (EMC) which required a skeleton structure and a high heat resistance because the synthesized biphenyl epoxy had a characteristic of rapidly lowering viscosity at a constant temperature and a rigid skeleton structure of biphenol. As a result, it was confirmed that the TMBP-based epoxy developed in this study was composed of a crystalline structure, and a curing reaction was observed with a Novolac resin at a high temperature. In the presence of a catalyst, a curing reaction was observed around 150 ℃ and thus TMBP-based epoxy was successfully applied as a raw material of EMC.

  • Carbon dioxide was designated as one of greenhouse gases that cause global warming. Among various ways to solve the $CO_2$ emission issue, the 3rd-generation biomass (algae) production is considered as a viable method to reduce $CO_2$ in the atmosphere. In this research, we propose a design of an innovative sustainable production system by utilizing the 3rd generation biomass in the environment of floating production storage and offloading (FPSO). Existing biomass production systems depend on the solar energy and they cannot continue producing biomass at night. Electricity produced from offshore wind farms also need an efficient way to store the energy through energy storage system (ESS) or deliver it real-time through power grid, both requiring heavy investment of capital. Thus, we design an offshore grid structure harnessing LED lights to supply the necessary light energy, by using the electricity produced from the wind farm, resulting in the maximized production of biomass and efficient use of wind farm energy. The final design integrates the biomass production system enhanced by LED lights with a wind power generation. The suggested NLP model for the optimal design, implemented in GAMS, would be useful for designing improved offshore biomass production systems combined with the wind farm.

  • This study was retrospectively to compare the exposure dose and the imaging quality in coronary CT angiography by using the 64 channel multidetector computed tomography and the 128 channel DSCT. Effective dose was calculated dose length product (DLP) by multiplied the convention factor of chest (0.017). Imaging quality was assessed by radiologists using the 5-point Likert scale. The DLP was ranged from 851 to $1277mGy{\cdot}cm$ (mean: 17.23 mSv) in the 64 channel MDCT and from 82 to $110mGy{\cdot}cm$ (mean: 1.58 mSv) in the of 128 channel DSCT, respectively. The score of imaging quality was respectively $3.31{\pm}0.62$ in 64 channel MDCT and $4.05{\pm}0.46$ in the 128 channel DSCT. The exposure dose of 128 channel DSCT has decreased 1ess 1/10. The score of imaging quality was significant difference between two modalities and the frequency (>4 good) in the 128 channel DSCT is about three times than that of the 64 channel MDCT. Therefore, the 128 channel DSCT in coronary CT angiography is clinically more effective modality for both investigators and patients.

  • Lithium-ion battery (LiB) with high energy density and efficiency has been utilized for the electric vehicle (EV) and energy storage system (ESS) as well as portable devices. However, as explosion accidents have frequently happened till lately, all-solid-state lithium secondary battery (ALSB) began to get in a spotlight because it can secure a very high safety and energy density by substituting flammable organic liquid electrolyte to nonflammable inorganic solid electrolyte. In spite of ALSB's certain merits, it has shown much poorer performance of cells than one of LiB due to some challenges, which have been small or never dealt with in the LiB system. Hence, although plenty of studies made progress to solve them, an approach about design of all-solid-state electrode (ASSE) has been limited on account of difficulty of ALSB's experiments. That is why the virtual 3D structure of an all-solid-state electrode has to be built and used for the prediction of cell performance. In this study, we elucidate how to form the 3D ASSE structure and what to be needed for the simulation of characteristics on ALSB. Furthermore, the ultimate orientation of 3D modeling and simulation for the study of ALSB are briefly suggested.

  • The majority of existing studies for quantifying uncertainties in climate change impact assessments suggest only the uncertainties of each stage, and not the total uncertainty and its propagation in the whole procedure. Therefore, this study has proposed a new method, the Uncertainty Delta Method (UDM), which can quantify uncertainties using the variances of projections (as the UDM is derived from the first-order Taylor series expansion), to allow for a comprehensive quantification of uncertainty at each stage and also to provide the levels of uncertainty propagation, as follows: total uncertainty, the level of uncertainty increase at each stage, and the percentage of uncertainty at each stage. For quantifying uncertainties at each stage as well as the total uncertainty, all the stages - two emission scenarios (ES), three Global Climate Models (GCMs), two downscaling techniques, and two hydrological models - of the climate change assessment for water resources are conducted. The total uncertainty took 5.45, and the ESs had the largest uncertainty (4.45). Additionally, uncertainties are propagated stage by stage because of their gradual increase: 5.45 in total uncertainty consisted of 4.45 in emission scenarios, 0.45 in climate models, 0.27 in downscaling techniques, and 0.28 in hydrological models. These results indicate the projection of future water resources can be very different depending on which emission scenarios are selected. Moreover, using Fractional Uncertainty Method (FUM) by Hawkins and Sutton (2009), the major uncertainty contributor (emission scenario: FUM uncertainty 0.52) matched with the results of UDM. Therefore, the UDM proposed by this study can support comprehension and appropriate analysis of the uncertainty surrounding the climate change impact assessment, and make possible a better understanding of the water resources projection for future climate change.

  • To prevent contamination by Campylobacter jejuni during chicken carcass processing, the effect of emulsifiers on C. jejuni inoculated on chicken skin was investigated using confocal laser scanning microscopy. Among the 8 emulsifiers (SWA-10D, L-7D, M-7D, S-1670, L-1695, P-1670, polysorbate 20, polysorbate 80) tested for antimicrobial activity by the paper disk method, 4 emulsifiers (L-7D, L-1695, polysorbate 20, polysorbate 80) were screened further. Emulsifier L-1695 showed the largest clear zone at a concentration of 200 mg/mL. The 4 emulsifiers subjected to primary screening were screened for heat and pH stability. In the contact surface test, emulsifier L-1695 showed the lowest log CFU/㎠ value on both stainless steel and ceramic surfaces. When emulsifier L-1695 was applied via general and electrostatic spray methods, the number of C. jejuni entrapped inside chicken skin follicles was significantly reduced in both methods. In conclusion, the emulsifier L-1695 could be employed as a microbial detachment agent in the chicken carcass processing industry.

  • Naval battleships have systems to perform special purposes, such as the Command and Fire Control System (CFCS). Some of the this equipment should be equipped with an Uninterruptible Power System (UPS ) to ensure operational continuity and the backup of important data, even during unexpected power outages caused by problems with the ship's power generator. Heavy combat losses can occur if the equipment cannot satisfy the function. Therefore, it is important to design a stable UPS. The battery and Battery Management System (BMS) are two of the most important factors for designing a stable UPS. A power outage will be encountered if the battery and BMS are not stable. The customer will be exposed to abnormal situations, loss of important tactical data, and inability to operate some of the CFCS. As a result, an enhanced safety system should be designed. Thus, this study implemented and verified the improved system in terms of three methods, such as comparative analysis of the batteries, improvement about leakage current of the circuit, and tests of the aggressive environmental resistance to improve the UPS for CFCS.

  • The rapid increase in energy consumption based on fossil fuels is accelerating global warming. In particular, the road transportation sector has high carbon dioxide emissions, so transitioning towards electric vehicles is recommended. Thus, the importance of secondary batteries is increasing. Secondary batteries are reversible batteries that use energy and can be reused through a charging and discharging process. Currently, lithium-ion batteries are widely used. Secondary batteries place importance on six major factors: energy, output, lifespan, environmental friendliness, cost, and stability. Research is actively being conducted to satisfy all six factors by understanding the material characteristics of each component of the battery. As it is difficult to move away from lithium as a cathode material, researchers are investigating higher performance materials that mix materials such as cobalt, nickel, manganese, and aluminum with lithium and use graphite, silicon, and lithium metal to increase capacity. In the case of electrolytes, liquid electrolytes are still mainly used. However, solid electrolytes are being studied due to their stability, but additional research must be conducted to satisfy the energy and output factors. This review paper aims to provide an understanding of secondary batteries through an overview of secondary batteries, the materials and characteristics of their components, their technological trends, and their associated companies.

  • Objectives: Healthy sleep is important and can have a positive effect on resilience. The aim of the present study was to compare the differences in resilience between two group nurses in rotating shift and daytime fixed work schedules and to investigate stress perception, coping factors, social and psychological health, and sleep factors that may affect resilience. Methods: A total of 400 female nurses having rotating shift and daytime fixed work schedules at two hospitals was surveyed from June 12, 2017 to June 12, 2018. All participants completed perceived stress scale (PSS), stress coping short form (Brief COPE), psycho-social wellbeing Index short form (PWI-SF) or general health questionnaire-18 (GHQ-18), center for epidemiologic studies depression scale (CES-D), STAI-X-1 in state-trait anxiety inventory (STAI), Pittsburgh sleep quality index (PSQI), Epworth sleepiness scale (ESS), insomnia severity index (ISI), Conner Davidson resilience scale (CD-RISC). Independent t-test, paired t-test, Pearson correlation analysis, and multiple regression analysis were applied to the results of the final 373 questionnaires of 400 nurses in two general hospitals. Results: Comparing the variable statistics between the two groups of rotating shift and daytime fixed work nurses, showed statistically significant differences in all variables except perceived stress, sleep quality, and daytime sleepiness. Factors that had a significant correlation with resilience were stress coping strategies, depression, and insomnia severity (p < 0.001). In multiple regression analysis, larger positive reframing1 (β = 0.206, p < 0.001), severe less depression (β = -3.45, p < 0.001), and higher psychosocial health (β = 0.193, p < 0.001). As acceptance coping2 increased (β = 0.129, p < 0.05), as daytime sleepiness decreased (β = -1.17, p < 0.05), and as active coping2 increased (β = 0.118, p < 0.05), as the positive reframing2 increases (β = 0.110, p < 0.05), the resilience increased. Conclusion: This study, it was found that resilience was higher in daytime fixed workers than in shift workers. In addition, specific stress coping strategies, psycho-social health, sleep, and depression factors were associated with resilience.
