Enhancing the reliability of the system is important for recent system-on-chip (SoC) designs. This importance has led to studies on fault diagnosis and tolerance. Fault-injection (FI) techniques are widely used to measure the fault-tolerance capabilities of resilient systems. FI techniques suffer from limitations in relation to environmental conditions and system features. Moreover, a hardware-based FI can cause permanent damage to the target system, because the actual circuit cannot be restored. Accordingly, we propose a simulation-based FI framework based on the Verilog Procedural Interface for measuring the failure rates of SoCs caused by soft errors. We execute five benchmark programs using an ARM Cortex M0 processor and inject soft errors using the proposed framework. The experiment has a 95% confidence level with a ±2.53% error, and confirms the reliability and feasibility of using proposed framework for fault analysis in SoCs.
In the Dedicated Short Range Communication (DSRC) system channel, a large number of bit errors occur because of Additive White Gaussian Noise (AWGN) and fading. When an image data is transmitted under the condition, reconstructed image quality is significantly degraded. In this paper, as an alternative to the error correcting code and/or automatic repeat request scheme, we propose an error recovery scheme for image data transmission. We first analyze how transmission errors in the DSRC system channel degrade image quality. Then, in order to improve image quality, we propose error resilient and concealment schemes for still image transmission using DCT-based fixed length coding, hamming code, cyclic redundancy check, and interleaver. Finally, we show its performance by an experiment.
Multimedia content is very sensitive to packet loss and therefore multimedia streams are typically protected against packet loss, either by supporting retransmission requests or by adding redundant forward error correction (FEC) data. However, the redundant FEC information introduces significant additional bandwidth requirements, as compared to the bitrate of the original video stream. Especially on wireless and mobile networks, bandwidth availability is limited and variable. In this article, an adaptive FEC (A-FEC) system is presented whereby the redundancy rate is dynamically adjusted to the packet loss, based on feedback messages from the client. We present a statistical model of our A-FEC system and validate the proposed system under different packet loss conditions and loss probabilities. The experimental results show that 57-95%bandwidth gain can be achieved compared with a static FEC approach.
This paper presents a remote mobile robot system that transmits streaming video and audio over the lossy packet networks such as (Wireless) LAN. The error resilient video and audio packets are transmitted on the RTP/UDPfP Protocol stack. The mobile robot can be accessed by a certified user from the remoted area. Thus, the movement of mobile robot can be controlled by the operator observing the working surroundings.
In this paper, channel error characteristics are investigated to alleviate the channel error propagation problem of the digital TV transmission systems. First, error propagation problems, which are mainly caused by the inter-frame dependancy and variable length coding of the MPEG-2 baseline encoder, are intensively analyzed. Next, existing channel resilient schemes are systematically classified into two kinds of schemes; one for the encoder and the other for the decoder. By comparing the performance and implementation cost, the encoder side schemes, such as error localization, layered coding, error resilience bit stream generation techniques, are described in this paper. Also, in an effort to consider the parcticality of the real transmission situation, an efficient error detection scheme for a decoder system is proposed by employing a priori information of the bit stream syntas, checking the encoding conditions at the encoder stage, and exploiting the statistics of the image itself. Finally, subsequent error concealment technique based on the DCT coefficient recovery algorithm is adopted to evaluate the performance of the proposed error resilience technique. The computer simulation results show that the quality of the received image is significantly improved when the bit error rate is as high as 10$^{-5}$ .
영상코딩에는 baseline JPEG 압축방식을 사용하였고 채널코딩에는 연속적인 에러 수정을 위해 RS(Reed-Solomon)코드와 길쌈부호가 연쇄된 truncated Type-I Hybrid ARQ 방식을 이용하였다. truncated Type-I Hybrid ARQ방식을 적용한 경우 같은 BER에 대하여 실제 WLL시스텝보다 약 2dB의 Eb/No 이득이 있음을 시뮬레이션을 통해 알 수 있었다. 따라서 효과적인 저비트율(Low-Bit Rate)의 영상전송을 위한 방법을 제시하여 음성과 동일한 전력으로도 데이터의 요구 BER을 유지할 수 있도록 하였다.
The Distance Measuring Equipment (DME) is a ground-based aircraft navigation system and is considered as an infrastructure that ensures resilient aircraft navigation capability during the event of a Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) outage. The main problem of DME as a GNSS back up is a poor positioning accuracy that often reaches over 100 m. In this paper, a novel approach of applying deep reinforcement learning to a DME pulse design is introduced to improve the DME distance measuring accuracy. This method is designed to develop multipath-resistant DME pulses that comply with current DME specifications. In the research, a Markov Decision Process (MDP) for DME pulse design is set using pulse shape requirements and a timing error. Based on the designed MDP, we created an Environment called PulseEnv, which allows the agent representing a DME pulse shape to explore continuous space using the Soft Actor Critical (SAC) reinforcement learning algorithm.
We investigated the polarization-mode dispersion (PMD) tolerance for 40Gb/s non-return to zero (NRZ), duobinary NRZ, return to zero (RZ), carrier-suppressed RZ (CS-RZ), and duobinary-carrier-suppressed RZ (DCS-RZ) modulation formats with a forward error correction (FEC) coding. The power penalty has been calculated as a measure of the system performance due to PMD. After comparison of the PMD tolerance of various modulation formats, our results suggest that RZ signals have the best tolerance against the effect of first-order PMD only. The duobinary NRZ modulation format is most resilient to PMD when both first- and second-order PMD are considered. However, the duobinary NRZ modulation format is the most sensitive to the incident angle of the input signal to a fiber axis in the presence of first- and second-order PMD, leading to incident angle-dependent power penalty. The coding gain by FEC can cope with the power penalties induced by first- and second-order PMD up to a DGD value of 16ps.

Recent advances in forward error correction (FEC) coding techniques were focused on addressing the challenges of multicast and broadcast delivery. However, FEC approaches can also be used for unicast content delivery in order to solve transmission control protocol issues found in wireless networks. In this paper, we exploit the error resilient properties of Raptor codes by proposing Raptor-based content delivery protocol (RCDP) - a novel solution for reliable and bidirectional unicast communication in lossy links that can improve content delivery in situations where the wireless network is the bottleneck. RCDP has been designed, validated, optimized, and its performance has been analyzed in terms of throughput and resource efficiency. Experimental results show that RCDP is a highly efficient solution for environments characterized by high delays and packet losses making it very suitable for intelligent transport system oriented applications since it achieves significant performance improvements when compared to traditional transport layer protocols.
