  • As high precision industries such as semiconductor, TFT-LCD manufacturing and MEMS continue to grow, the demand for higher DOF precision stages has been increasing. In general, the stages should accommodate a prescribed range of payloads in order to position various precision manufacturing/inspection instruments. Therefore a nonlinear controller using sliding motion is developed, which bears mass perturbation and makes the upper plate of the stage move in 6 DOF. For the application of the nonlinear control, an observer is also developed based on expected noise covariance. To eliminate the steady state error of step response, integral terms are inserted into the state-space model. The linear term of the controller is designed using optimization scheme in which parameters can be weighted according to their physical significance, whereas the nonlinear term of the controller is designed using trial and error method. A comprehensive simulation study proves that the designed controller is robust against mass perturbation and completely eliminates steady state errors.

  • The performance characteristics of a dynamic control system are evaluated according to the transient and steady-state responses. The transient performance is the controllability of the output for the tracking of the reference or the ability to reduce or reject the effects of unwanted disturbances; alternatively, the steady-state performance is represented by the magnitude of the control error at the steady state. As the effects of the two performances on each other are reciprocal, a controller design that shows a zero steady-state error for the ramp input is uncommon because of the challenge regarding the achievement of an acceptable transient response. This paper proposes a PI+double-integral controller for the elimination of the steady-state error for the ramp input while a sound transient performance is maintained. The control-gain design procedure is described by the second-order response for the step input and the response of the error dynamics for the ramp input. The PI+double-integral controller is designed for the first-order transfer function that is derived from a system identification with the open-loop experiment data of the dc-motor. The simple structure of the proposed controller enables the adoption of a low-end microcontroller for the implementation of a real-time control. The experiment results show that the control performance is as effective as that of the simulation analysis for the operating point of linear system; furthermore, the PI+double-integral controller can be conveniently applied to the control system, which is desirable for the improvement of the steady-state error.

  • The linear and decision-feedback equalization can mitigate time-varying intersymbol interference (ISI) caused by time-varying multipath propagation for underwater acoustic channels. The perfect elimination of interference components, however, is difficult using the linear equalization and the decision feedback equalizer has an error propagation problem. To overcome these shortcomings, this paper proposes an equalizer mode selection method using training sequences. The proposed method selects an equalization mode corresponding to the signal-to-noise ratio (SNR). If the SNR is low, the proposed system operates the linear equalizer for preventing the error propagation and if the SNR is high, the decision feedback equalizer for eliminating the residual ISI. Therefore, the proposed method can improve the error performance compared to the conventional equalizers. The computer simulation shows the proposed method improves the bit error performance using practical underwater channels responses acquired from the sea experiment.

  • The calibration method of the initial value error obtained in the weight measurement through anchor bolt type strain gauge sensor is proposed. The strain gauge sensor is developed for preventing the overturning of forklift, which is the most frequent type of safety-accident in industry. It was confirmed that the initial value error is caused from the physical and mechanical error of anchor bolt, and the environmental problem. Since the elimination of these causes falls outside the realm of this research, we find out the calibrated values based on all the causes, and we adjust the initial values of analog-to-digital convertor (ADC) module consisted of strain gauge sensor block using the calibrated values. We use the linear interpolation method for our calibration. We confirm that four sensor modules have the different under 5% between the real weight and the measured value in the experiment applied with the calibration of initial values. The low correlation between the real weights and ADC values is also improved through the proposed calibration.

  • This Paper proposes an adaptive error diffusioThis paper proposes an adaptive error diffusion algorithm for text enhancement followed by an efficient text segmentation that uses the maximum gradient difference (MGD). The gradients are calculated along with scan lines, and the MGD values are filled within a local window to merge the potential text segments. Isolated segments are then eliminated in the non-text region filtering process. After the left segmentation, a conventional error diffusion method is applied to the background, while the edge enhancement error diffusion is used for the text. Since it is inevitable that visually objectionable artifacts are generated when using two different halftoning algorithms, the gradual dilation is proposed to minimize the boundary artifacts in the segmented text blocks before halftoning. Sharpening based on the gradually dilated text region (GDTR) prevents the printing of successive dots around the text region boundaries. The error diffusion algorithm with edge enhancement is extended to halftone color images to sharpen the tort regions. The proposed adaptive error diffusion algorithm involves color halftoning that controls the amount of edge enhancement using a general error filter. The multiplicative edge enhancement parameters are selected based on the amount of edge sharpening and color difference. Plus, the additional error factor is introduced to reduce the dot elimination artifact generated by the edge enhancement error diffusion. By using the proposed algorithm, the text of a scanned image is sharper than that with a conventional error diffusion without changing background.

  • In sensor network, the elimination of NLOS information is a necessity to improve the accuracy of the localization. For this reason, we proposed an algorithm iteratively eliminating the NLOS information to enhance the accuracy of the localization of a tag location, and simulated the proposed algorithm to confirm the performance. The proposed algorithm can estimate the location of the error distance within 3.5m when it has 10 LOS coordinates with LOS information. In addition, it can enhance the accuracy according to decreasing NLOS coordinates.

  • With GPS being the primary navigation system, Loran use is in steep decline. However, according to the final report of vulnerability assessment of the transportation infrastructure relying on the global positioning system prepared by the John A. Volpe National Transportation Systems Center, there are current attempts to enhance and re-popularize Loran as a GPS backup system through the characteristic of the ground based low frequency navigation system. To advance the Loran system such as Loran-C modernization and eLoran development, research is definitely needed in the field of Loran-C receiver signal processing as well as Loran-C signal design and the technology of a receiver. We have developed a set of Matlab tools, which implement a software Loran-C receiver that performs the receiver's position determination through the following procedure. The procedure consists of receiving the Loran-C signal, cycle selection, calculation of the TDOA and range, and receiver's position determination through the Least Square Method. We experiences the effect of an incorrect cycle selection and various error factors (ECD, ASF, sky wave, CRI, etc.) from the result of the Loran-C signal processing. It is apparent that researches which focus on the elimination and mitigation of various error factors need to be investigated on a software Loran-C receiver. These aspects will be explored in further work through the method such as PLL and Kalman filtering.

  • In this study, it has been aimed that the accuracy of position control be increased by microstep drive to the 2 phase 8 pole HB type prototype of linear pulse motor of which winding are applied sine wave current and the vibration and noise in the lower speed region be decreased. The fixed off-time method which controls the exciting current bandwidth, was applied to the microstep current controller. When the LPM was driven 1/8 microstep its accuracy of position was 0.109[mm] (=tooth pitch 3.5[mm] ). Also, the elimination method of harmonics in the static thrust force is proposed. It was confirmed that the position error range of the prototype LPM was $\pm$0.2[mm].

  • This paper proposes a method to improve the mass spectral detection performance of the residual gas analyzer. By improving the mode estimation method for setting the threshold value and improving the additive noise elimination method, it is possible to detect mass spectrums having low peak values of the threshold level difficult to distinguish from noise. Ion signal blocks for each mass index with noise removed by the improved method are effective for eliminating invalid ion signals based on the linear and quadratic fittings. The mass spectrum can be obtained from the quadratic fitted curves for the reconstructed ion signal block using only the valid ion signals. In addition, the resolution of the mass spectrum can be improved by correcting the error caused by the shift of the spectral peak position. To verify the performance of the proposed method, computer simulations were performed using real ion signals obtained from the residual gas analysis system under development. The simulation results show that the proposed method is valid.

  • One recent notable method for real-time elimination of ionospheric errors in geodetic applications is the Predicted Global Ionosphere Map (PGIM). This study analyzes the level of accuracy achievable when applying the PGIM provided by the Center for Orbit Determination of Europe (CODE) to the Korean Peninsula region. First, an examination of the types and lead times of PGIMs provided by the International GNSS Service (IGS) Analysis Center revealed that CODE's two-day prediction model, C2PG, is available approximately eight hours before midnight. This suggests higher real-time usability compared to the one-day prediction model, C1PG. When evaluating the accuracy of PGIM by assuming the final output of the Global Ionosphere Map (GIM) as a reference, it was found that on days with low solar activity, the error is within ~2 TECU, and on days with high solar activity, the error reaches ~3 TECU. A comparison of the errors introduced when using PGIM and three solar activity indices-Kp index, F10.7, and sunspot number-revealed that F10.7 exhibits a relatively high correlation coefficient compared to Kp-index and sunspot number, confirming the effectiveness of the prediction model.
