  • Satellite Based Augmentation Systems (SBAS) provide ionospheric corrections at geographically five degree-spaced Ionospheric Grid Points (IGPs) and confidence bounds, called Grid Ionospheric Vertical Errors (GIVEs), on the error of those corrections. Since the ionosphere is one of the largest error sources which may threaten the safety of a single frequency Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) user, the ionospheric correction and integrity bound algorithm is essential for the development of SBAS. The current single frequency based SBAS, already deployed or being developed, implement the ionospheric correction and error bounding algorithm of the Wide Area Augmentation System (WAAS) developed for use in the United States. However, the ionospheric condition is different for each region and it could greatly degrade the performance of SBAS if its regional characteristics are not properly treated. Therefore, this paper discusses key factors that should be taken into consideration in the development of the ionospheric correction and integrity bound algorithm optimized for the Korean SBAS. The main elements of the conventional GIVE monitor algorithm are firstly reviewed. Then, this paper suggests several areas which should be investigated to improve the availability of the Korean SBAS by decreasing the GIVE value.

  • This study presents the so-called Modified Allowable Stress Design (MASD) method for structural designs. The objective of this study is to qualitatively estimate uncertainties of tensile steel member's cross-sectional structural designs and find the optimal resulting design which can resist all uncertainty cases. The design parameters are assumed to be interval associated with lower and upper bounds and consequently interval methods are implemented to non-stochastically produce design results including the structural uncertainties. By seeking optimal uncertainty combinations among interval parameters, engineers can qualitatively describe uncertain design solutions which were not considered in conventional structural designs. Under the assumption that structures have basically uncertainties like displacement responses, the safety range of resulting designs is represented by lower and upper bounds depending on given tolerance error and structural parameters. As a numerical example uncertain cross-sectional areas of members that can resist applied loads are investigated and it demonstrates that the present design method is superior to conventional allowable stress designs (ASD) with respect to a reliably structural safety as well as an economical material.

  • This paper considers a scheduling problem where a customer orders multiple products(jobs) from a production facility. The objective is to minimize the sum of the order(batch) completion times. While a machine can process only one job at a time, multiple machines can simultaneously process jobs in a batch. Although each job has a unique processing time, we consider the case where batch processing times are identical. This simplification allows us to develop heuristics with improved performance bounds. This problem was motivated by a real world problem encountered by foreign electronics manufacturers. We first establish the complexity of the problem. For the two parallel machine case, we introduce two simple but intuitive heuristics, and find their worst case relative error bounds. One bound is tight and the other bound goes to 1 as the number of orders goes to infinity. However, neither heuristic is superior for all instances. We extend one of the heuristics to an arbitrary number of parallel machines. For a fixed number of parallel machines, we find a worst case bound which goes to 1 as the number of orders goes to infinity. Then, a tighter bound is found for the three parallel machine case. Finally, the heuristics are empirically evaluated.

  • Location information will become increasingly important for future Pervasive Computing applications. Location tracking system of a moving device can be classified into two types of architectures: an active mobile architecture and a passive mobile architecture. In the former, a mobile device actively transmits signals for estimating distances to listeners. In the latter, a mobile device listens signals from beacons passively. Although the passive architecture such as Cricket location system is inexpensive, easy to set up, and safe, it is less precise than the active one. In this paper, we present a passive location system using Cricket Mote sensors which use RF and ultrasonic signals to estimate distances. In order to improve accuracy of the passive system, the transmission speed of ultrasound was compensated according to air temperature at the moment. Upper and lower bounds of a distance estimation were set up through measuring minimum and maximum distances that ultrasonic signal can reach to. Distance estimations beyond the upper and the lower bounds were filtered off as errors in our scheme. With collecting distance estimation data at various locations and comparing each distance estimation with real distance respectively, we proposed an equation to compensate the deviation at each point. Equations for proposed algorithm were derived to calculate relative coordinates of a moving device. At indoor and outdoor tests, average location error and average location tracking period were 3.5 cm and 0.5 second, respectively, which outperformed Cricket location system of MIT.

  • In practical wireless systems, the erroneous channel state information (CSI) sometimes deteriorates the performance drastically. This paper focuses on robust design of coordinated set planning of coordinated multi-point (CoMP) transmission, with respect to the feedback delay and link error. The non-ideal channel models involving various uncertainty conditions are given. After defining a penalty factor, the robust net ergodic capacity optimization problem is derived, whose variables to be optimized are the number of coordinated base stations (BSs) and the divided area's radius. By the maximum minimum criterion, upper and lower bounds of the robust capacity are investigated. A practical scheme is proposed to determine the optimal number of cooperative BSs. The simulation results indicate that the robust design based on maxmin principle is better than other precoding schemes. The gap between two bounds gets smaller as transmission power increases. Besides, as the large scale fading is higher or the channel is less reliable, the number of the cooperated BSs shall be greater.

  • Simulated annealing is an attractive, but expensive, heuristic method for approximating the solution to combinatorial optimization problems. Attempts to parallel simulated annealing, particularly on distributed memory multicomputers, are hampered by the algorithm's requirement of a globally consistent system state. In a multicomputer, maintaining the global state S involves explicit message traffic and is a critical performance bottleneck. To mitigate this bottleneck, it becomes necessary to amortize the overhead of these state updates over as many parallel state changes as possible. By using this technique, errors in the actual cost C(S) of a particular state S will be introduced into the annealing process. This paper places analytically derived bounds on this error in order to assure convergence to the correct optimal result. The resulting parallel simulated annealing algorithm dynamically changes the frequency of global updates as a function of the annealing control parameter, i.e. temperature. Implementation results on an Intel iPSC/2 are reported.

  • This paper describes an iterative method for orthogonal projections $AA^+$ and $A^+A$ of an arbitrary matrix A, where $A^+$ represents the Moore-Penrose inverse. Convergence analysis along with the first and second order error estimates of the method are investigated. Three numerical examples are worked out to show the efficacy of our work. The first example is on a full rank matrix, whereas the other two are on full rank and rank deficient randomly generated matrices. The results obtained by the method are compared with those obtained by another iterative method. The performance measures in terms of mean CPU time (MCT) and the error bounds for computing orthogonal projections are listed in tables. If $Z_k$, k = 0,1,2,... represents the k-th iterate obtained by our method then the sequence of the traces {trace($Z_k$)} is a monotonically increasing sequence converging to the rank of (A). Also, the sequence of traces {trace($I-Z_k$)} is a monotonically decreasing sequence converging to the nullity of $A^*$.

  • A simple modification of well known Low Energy Adaptive Clustering Hierarchy (LEACH) protocol is proposed to exploit cooperative diversity. Instead of selecting a single cluster-head, we propose M cluster-heads in each cluster to obtain a diversity of order M. The cluster-heads gather data from all the sensor nodes within the cluster using same technique as LEACH. Cluster-heads transmit gathered data cooperatively towards the destination or higher order cluster-head. We propose a code combining based cooperative diversity protocol which is similar to coded cooperation that maximizes the performance of the proposed cooperative LEACH protocol. The implementation of the proposed cooperative strategy is analyzed. We develop the upper bounds on bit error rate (BER) and frame error rate (FER) for our proposal. Space time block codes (STBC) are also a suitable candidate for our proposal. In this paper, we argue that the STBC performs worse than the code combining cooperation.

  • In this paper, a two-stage hybrid flow shop problem is considered. Specifically, there exist identical parallel machines at stage 1 and two dedicated machines at stage 2, and the objective of the problem is to minimize makespan. After being processed by any machine at stage 1, a job must be processed by a specific machine at stage 2 depending on the job type, and one type of jobs can have different processing times on each machine. First, we introduce the problem and establish complexity of several variations of the problem. For some special cases, we develop optimal polynomial time solution procedures. Then, we establish some simple lower bounds for the problem. In order to solve this NP-hard problem, three heuristics based on simple rules such as the Johnson's rule and the LPT (Longest Processing Time first) rule are developed. For each of the heuristics, we provide some theoretical analysis and find some worst case bound on relative error. Finally, we empirically evaluate the heuristics.
