Development of the sediment transport model using GPU arithmetic (GPU 연산을 활용한 유사이송 예측모형 개발)

  • Many shorelines are facing the beach erosion. Considering the climate change and the increment of coastal population, the erosion problem could be accelerated. To address this issue, developing a sediment transport model for rapidly predicting terrain change is crucial. In this study, a sediment transport model based on GPU parallel arithmetic was introduced, and it was supposed to simulate the terrain change well with a higher computing speed compared to the CPU based model. We also aim to investigate the model performance and the GPU computational efficiency. We applied several dam break cases to verified model, and we found that the simulated results were close to the observed results. The computational efficiency of GPU was defined by comparing operation time of CPU based model, and it showed that the GPU based model were more efficient than the CPU based model.

  • Topology optimization is widely accepted as a conceptual design tool for the product design. Since the resulted layout of the topology optimization is a kind of digital images represented by the density distribution, the seamless process is required to transform digital images to the CAD model for the practical use. In this paper, the general process to construct a CAD model is developed to apply for topology images based on elements. The node density and the morphology technique is adopted to extract boundary contour of the shape and remove the noise of images through erosion and dilation operation. The proposed method automatically generates point data sets of the geometric model. The process is integrated with Pro/Engineer, so that the engineer in practice can directly handle with curves or surface form digital images.

  • A study on the system automation for the nitrogen splash slag coating in Basic Oxygen Blowing Furnace (BOF) is described. The engineers are trying to do their best efforts to increase the life of converter lining by developing improved refractory material and optimal operation techniques in the steel plants, A new slag coating method is needed to reduce the erosion rates of the refractory. In the current slag costing method, the BOF was swung back and forth. The new method uses the oxygen lance to blow the residual slag to the walls and cone of the converter. The nitrogen gas is used for blowing. This method is developed based on the automation process at factory in POSCO dated on the May 1998. The test results of nitrogen splash slag coating system for the BOF at POSCO are show to show the effectiveness of the system.

Reliability Assessment of Polymer Insulators by Accelerated Aging Test (가속열화시험에 의한 폴리머애자의 신뢰성 평가)

  • In order to assess the long-tenn reliability of polymer insulators for distribution power systems, we have developed the accelerated aging test method which can simulate the operation conditions. In this study, 3000 hours aging test for 4 kinds of polymer insulators has been completed by the developed accelerated aging test. After 3000 hours aging test, visual inspection and electrical tests were carried for identifying a change of characteristics. Some specimens showed the surface erosion and the manufacturing defect. In the electrical tests, the wet flashover voltage was significant1y decreased by the accelerated aging test. In comparison with the field-aged polymer insulators, it can be concluded that the developed test method can evaluate the long-tenn reliability within short time and screen the manufacturing defect.

  • A new method for enhancing blurred images using fuzzy logic concepts is proposed. Blurred images contain blurred boundaries which make it difficult to detect edges and segment areas in images. In order to sharpen blurred edges local contrast information of an image and erosion/dilation properties of local min/max operations are used in which local min/max operations are fuzzy logic operations. so that given images are transformed to fuzzy images and then these operations are applied on them. In this method the sharpening operation can be iteratively applied to the image to get better deblurring effect and gray-scale "salt-and-pepper" noises are suppressed. the efficiency of our algorithm is demonstrated through experimental results obtained with artificially-made blurred images and real blurred images.

  • Shipwaves am have harmful effects on ships working on the sea, in a harbour or navigational channel and caused beach erosion, seawall destruction. This study aims to investigate describe the characteristics of the wave pattern generated by an individual model ship tested at different velocities and hull forms for a given water depth and to investigate the variations at a given distance from the sailing line under the same conditions. As a result, the angles a's by model ship tests are smaller than those by real ship ones. Wave heights decreases with an increasing the mid-ship cross sectional area $A_s$. The maximum wave height and period increase rapidly in the subcritical speed, and beyond the critical speed the height and period decrease with increasing depth Froude number. And the period keeps constant with the distance from the sailing line.

  • To perform ultrasonic testing (UT) thickness measurement of the secondary side piping installed in nuclear power plants, the insulation for preventing heat loss should be removed. The type of insulation can be divided into fixed and removable insulation. Fixed and removable insulation have their own strengths and weaknesses. Removable insulation has been installed in the components susceptible to wall thinning caused by FAC and erosion from Shin-Kori unit 1, which commenced its commercial operation in 2011. In this paper, the number of repeated inspections of components and the number of replacements of fixed insulation were estimated and a more economical way was identified based on the manufacturing and installation costs for fixed and removable insulation.

Characteristics Evaluation of Non Point Source Treatment Facilities in Construction Site (건설 현장 내 비점오염원 처리 시설의 제거 특성 평가)

  • This study was conducted to investigate characteristics of the non-point source pollution under construction and evaluate available pollution control methods. Suspended solid loading is high when soil disturbs by rainfall and this phenomenon is much more severe at the initial stage of construction than at the final one. There are three methods available for erosion and sediment control, which are check dam, silt fence, and geotextile. Check dam and silt fence are for control of suspense solids and geotextile is for preventing soil erosion during rainfall. They can be installed as temporary control facilities at construction sites. From the comparison of those methods, it was found that geotextile method was the most efficient for the runoff control of non-point source pollution. Check dam and silt fence can remove suspense solids by pore spaces to some degree, but the removal of pollutants mainly occurs through sedimentation. Because the temporary control facilities have limited removal efficiency of pollutant, they often cause civil claims and contamination of water environment. Hence, using a pressurized filtration system along with temporary control facilities, highly enhanced treatment efficiency was anticipated. In addition, the loading capacity of these techniques depends on filtration velocity and input loading. And their pre-treatments are necessary for efficient operation.

  • To understand the variation and transport pattern of suspended matters, salinity, tidal current and suspended matters in semiclosed Muan Bay have been monitored during winter and summer. The suspended matters show considerably seasonal variations with low concentration and homogeneity in the water column during winter season, but with high concentration and layering during summer season. Particularly, during summer season, the freshwater and the suspended matters influxed by the gate operation of the Youngsan River sea-dike are transported northward in accordance with the would flow into the inner-bay by relaxed flood currents after the construction of sea-dike and sea-walls in the Mokpo coastal zone. But, in the south bay-mouth, those matters outflow through the bay-mouth, resulting from tidal ebb dominance and asymmetry in the west bay-mouth. The residual suspended matter flux is much higher in the south bay-mouth(-0.0955kg/m ${\cdot}$ sec) than that of west bay-mouth(0.0078kg1m ${\cdot}$ sec). Accordingly, The Muan Bay is interpreted as erosion-dominated environments, and the erosion somewhat progresses in the intertidal flat of the bay.
