  • The aim of this study is to develop and evaluate an efficient camera calibration method for vision-based head tracking. Tracking head movements is important in the design of an eye-controlled human/computer interface. A vision-based head tracking system was proposed to allow the user's head movements in the design of the eye-controlled human/computer interface. We proposed an efficient camera calibration method to track the 3D position and orientation of the user's head accurately. We also evaluated the performance of the proposed method. The experimental error analysis results showed that the proposed method can provide more accurate and stable pose (i.e. position and orientation) of the camera than the conventional direct linear transformation method which has been used in camera calibration. The results of this study can be applied to the tracking head movements related to the eye-controlled human/computer interface and the virtual reality technology.

  • A new design of shoulder straps and frame of backpack is proposed for reducing compression and fatigue of shoulder. The stress reduction effects of a backpack equipped with the newly designed shoulder straps and frame have been analyzed statistically through various experiments. We show that the newly designed shoulder straps(wider than the conventional ones) is superior to existing shoulder straps in respect of RPE, task performance measure and physiological measure. The new frame is also proven to be superior to existing frame in respect of RPE and task performance measure. In conclusion, the proposed shoulder straps and frame are shown to enhance the task performance of soldiers.

  • Product usability consists of many attributes such as learnability, efficiency, memorability, and so on. In particular, learnability is one of the most important attributes in product usability. Therefore, many people consider the primary criterion for a good user interface to be the degree to which it is easy to learn. Learnability represents the degree of how much can easily learn the usage of a product. It concerns the features of the interactive system that allow novice users to understand how to use it initially and then how to attain a maximal level of performance. In this study, we studied on the application of learning curve to evaluate product learnability. In order to validate the applicability, we carried out simple experiment using mobile phone. We got task completion times through the experiment and predicted the times using learning curve model. And then, we compared prediction times to task completion times. Finally, we identified that learning curve could apply to predict and compare product learnability.

  • This study suggests a genetic algorithm-based partial least squares (GA-based PLS) method to select the design variables for building a usability model. The GA-based PLS uses a genetic algorithm to minimize the root-mean-squared error of a partial least square regression model. A multiple linear regression method is applied to build a usability model that contains the variables seleded by the GA-based PLS. The performance of the usability model turned out to be generally better than that of the previous usability models using other variable selection methods such as expert rating, principal component analysis, cluster analysis, and partial least squares. Furthermore, the model performance was drastically improved by supplementing the category type variables selected by the GA-based PLS in the usability model. It is recommended that the GA-based PLS be applied to the variable selection for developing a usability model.

  • Human error has brought about accidents more than 50% in system of a large size and complicated expecially in nuclear power plants(NPPs). The technology of Man Machine Interface(MMI) has been changed to the digitalized controls employing computer-based technology. According to this trend. the human factors guidelines are becoming main issue for reliable supports to digitalized information displays. However. the existing human factors guidelines is not enough for advanced information display on NPPs. The purpose of this research is to develop the reliable design and evaluation guidelines for advanced information display in main control room (MCR) of NPPs. In this study. the various general human factors guidelines concerning information display on CRT are integrated on data base management system. unified based on the integration rules. and applied in computer based procedures. The use of the integrated guidelines are expected to evaluate the existing information display on MCR in NPPs from the human factors point of view.

  • User's sensibility has an important effect upon appreciating household electronic appliances and user's feeling of satisfaction with products has a good effect on the choice of product on purchasing those items. In this point of view, the human-oriented approach of product development system can be adopted as Human Sensibility Engineering. The target of changed development system is to define user's sensibility factors and to apply them to design and development. In this study, the human sensibility ergonomics approach and usability test have been applied to the development and evaluation of an electronic product model.

  • The effects of the timing of daily bathing on sleep in winter were studied. Eight healthy male subjects were assigned to three sleep conditions: bathing just before sleeping (Condition J), bathing 2 h before sleeping (Condition T0 and no bathing before sleeping (Control). We can found that slow wave sleep and REM sleep were increased, and sleep onset latency and wake after sleep onset were shortened in Condition T compared with Condition J. Rectal and mean skin temperatures n both bathing conditions were the same levels after the first half of sleep. Furthermore, subjective sleep sensation was the highest value in Condition T. These results suggest that bathing done before going to bed in winter was good for sleep; moreover, bathing 2 h before going to bed was more effective than bathing immediately before going to bed.

  • Human sensibility ergonomics is the technology of measuring human sensibility, applying informaiton to the design of products, systems, and environments for convenient, comfort, and safe human use, and pleasuring human life. This study introduce the research contents and strategy on the human sensibility ergonomics project, which started as one of the national research projects of Korea. The objective of the project is to construct the basis of application technology for human-centered products and environments design in order to enhance the competitive power of the products and the quality of human life. The project consists of three main parts, that is, development of fundamental technology for human sensibility, development of simulator for measurement and evaluation of human sensibility, and development of application technology for products and environments. Total research funds is 70million dollars for 7 years.

  • A two-dimensional static biochemical model of lower extremity in the seated posture was developed to assess muscular activities of lower extremity required for a variety of foot pedal operations. We found that the double linear optimization method that has been used for modelling articulated body segments does no predict the forces generated by biarticular muscles reasonably, so the revised double linear optimization scheme was used to consider the synergistic effects of biarticular muscles in our model, assuming that the muscle forces are distributed proportionally based on their physiological cross sectional area. The model incorporated three rigid body se- gments with six muscles to represnet lower extremity. For the model validation, three male subjects performed the experiments in which EMG activities of six lower extremity muscles were measured. Predicted muscle forces were compare with the corresponding EMG amplitudes and it showed no statistical difference. The model being developed can be used to design and assess pedal and foot-related tool design.

  • The objective of the study is to investigate the influence of aesthetic attributes on user interface design. Theories of aesthetics are first studied from which aesthetic attributes are defined as information sources. Representation of a product is viewed as a combination of aesthetic attributes, based on a hypothesis that each attribute has a certain influence on the performance in terms of user interface. An experiment was conducted to support the hypothesis. Various combinations of aesthetic attributes of a microwave oven were generated from the orthogonal array of a conjoint analysis. Subjects perfomed on a computer two types of tasks, each of which simulated a combination of attributes. Reaction time was evaluated as a performance measure for the conjoint analysis to find out how much influence each attribute has on the performance. A computer program, UISA(User interface Simulation system of Aesthetic attributes0, was developed and used for simulation. Findings on the influences of aesthetic attributes were summarized.
