The enhancement of the service life of damaged or cracked structures is a major issue for researchers and engineers. The hierarchical void element with the integrals of Legend polynomials is used to characterize the fracture behavior of unpatched crack as well as repaired crack with bonded composite patches by computing the stress intensity factors and stress contours at the crack tip. The numerical approach is based on the v-version degenerate shell element including the theory of anisotropic laminated composites. Since the equivalent single layer approach is adopted in this study, the proposed element is necessary to represent a discontinuous crack part as a continuum body with zero stiffness of materials. Thus the aspect ratio of this element to represent the crack should be extremely slender. The sensitivity of numerical solution with respect to energy release rate, displacement and stress has been tested to show the robustness of hierarchical void element as the aspect ratio is increased up to 2000. The stiffness derivative method and displacement extrapolation method have been applied to calculate the stress intensity factors of Mode I problem.
This paper presents a state-of-the-art review of the nonlinear modelling techniques available today for describing the structural behaviour of masonry infills and their interaction with frame structures subjected to in-plane loads. Following brief overviews on the behaviour of masonry-infilled frames and on the results of salient experimental tests, three modelling approaches are discussed in more detail: the micro, the meso and the macro approaches. The first model considers each of the infilled frame elements as separate: brick units, mortar, concrete and steel reinforcement; while the second approach treats the masonry infill as a continuum. The paper focuses on the third approach, which combines frame elements for the beams and columns with one or more equivalent struts for the infill panel. Due to its relative simplicity and computational speed, the macro model technique is more widely used today, though not all proposed models capture the main effects of the frame-infill interaction.

A ceramic monolithic catalyst is a honeycomb structure that consists of two layers. The honeycomb structure is regarded as a continuum in structure and heat-flow analysis. The equivalent mechanical properties of the honeycomb structure were determined by performing finite element analysis (FEA) for a test specimen. Bending strength experiments and FEA of the test specimen used in ASTM C1674-08 standard test were performed individually. The bonding coefficient between the cordierite ceramic layer and the washcoat layer was almost zero. The FEA test specimen was modeled on the basis of the bonding coefficient. The elastic modulus, Poisson's ratio, and the thermal properties of the ceramic monolithic substrate were determined by performing the FEA of the test specimen.
For predicting magnetic signals due to the remanent magnetization distributed on a ferromagnetic ship hull, this paper presents an efficient methodology for solving inverse problems, where the material sensitivity analysis based on the continuum mechanics is combined with the equivalent magnetic models. To achieve this, the 3D magnetic charge model and the magnetic dipole moment model are introduced and material sensitivity formulae applicable to each equivalent model are derived. The formulae offer the first-order gradient information of an objective function with respect to the variation of the magnetic charge or magnetic dipole and so an optimal solution can be easily obtained regardless of the number of design variables. To validate the proposed method, the numerical results are comparison with the real measurements of a mock-up model.
We present the result of systematic AKARI IRC infrared $2.5-5{\mu}m$ spectroscopy of >100 nearby luminous infrared galaxies, to investigate the energetic roles of starbursts and optically-elusive buried AGNs. Based on (1) the equivalent widths of the $3.3{\mu}m$ PAH emission features, (2) the optical depths of absorption features, and (3) continuum slopes, we can disentangle emission from starbursts and AGNs. We find that the energetic importance of buried AGNs increases with increasing galaxy infrared luminosities, suggesting that the AGN-starburst connections (and thereby possible AGN feedback to host galaxies) are luminosity dependent.

The present study proposes a theoretical model for predicting the matrix crack density growth of each layer in composite laminates subjected to thermo-mechanical loads. Each layer with matrix cracks is treated as an equivalent continuum of degraded elastic stiffnesses which are functions of the matrix crack density in each slyer. The energy release rate as a function of the degraded elastic stiffnesses is then calculated for each layer as functions of thermo-mechanical loads externally applied to the laminate. The matrix crack densities of each layer in general laminates are predicted as functions of the thermo-mechanical loads applied to a number of laminates. Comparisons of the present study with experimental data in the open literatures are also provided.
The stability of tunnels is usually analyzed as plain strain condition and rock bolts are assumed as 2 dimensional equivalent continuum structures. In this study, 2 and 3 dimensional numerical analyses were conducted to verify the validity of 2 dimensional analysis of rock bolts. Since the results of 2 dimensional analysis showed more than $10\%$ differences in poor rocks, it seems that 3 dimensional analysis is required in poor rocks.
The first near-infrared (NIR) spectroscopic survey of SDSS-selected blue early-type galaxies (BEGs) has been conducted using the AKARI/IRC. The NIR spectra of 36 BEGs are successfully secured, which are well balanced in their SF/Seyfert/LINER type composition. For high signal-to-noise ratio, we stack the BEG spectra all and in bins of several properties: color, specific star formation rate and optically-determined spectral type. We estimate the NIR continuum slope and the 3.3 micron PAH emission equivalent width in the stacked BEG spectra, and compare them with those of SSP model galaxies and known ULIRGs. We first report the NIR spectral features of BEGs and discuss the nature of BEGs based on the comparison with other objects.
In this study an approximate method based on the continuum approach and transfer matrix method for static and dynamic analyses of stiffened multi-bay coupled shear walls is presented. In this method the whole structure is idealized as a sandwich beam. Initially the differential equation of this equivalent sandwich beam is written then shape functions for each storey is obtained by the solution of differential equations. By using boundary conditions and storey transfer matrices which are obtained by these shape functions, system modes and periods can be calculated. Reliability of the study is shown with a few examples. A computer program has been developed in MATLAB and numerical samples have been solved for demonstration of the reliability of this method. The results of the samples show the agreement between the present method and the other methods given in literature.
The study on the flow characteristics and analysis of groundwater in discontinuous rock mass is very important, since the water inflow into the underground opening during excavation induces serious stability and environmental problems. To investigate the flow through single rock joint, the effect of various aperture distribution on the groundwater flow has been analyzed. Observed through the analysis is the "channel flow", the phenomenon that the flow is dominant along the path of large aperture for given joint. The equivalent hydraulic conductivity is estimated and verified through the application of the joint network analysis for 100 joint maps generated statistically. Both the analytic aproach based on isotropic continuum premise and the joint network analysis are tested and compared analyzing the gorundwater inflow for underground openings of different sizes and varying joint density. The joint network analysis is considered better to reflect the geometric properties of joint distribution in analyzing the groundwater flow.ater flow.
