This paper develops a simplified, but effective, algorithm in obtaining critical slab design moments for parking garages. Maintaining the uniformly distributed load concept generally adopted in the design of building structures, this paper also introduces the equivalent vehicle load factors, which can simulate the vehicle load effects without taking additional sophisticated numerical analyses. After choosing a standard design vehicle of 2.4 tons through the investigation of small to medium vehicles made in Korea, finite element analyses for concentrated wheel loads were conducted by referring to the influence surfaces. Based on the obtained member forces, we determined the equivalent vehicle load factors for slabs, which represent the ratios for forces under vehicle loads to these under uniformly distributed loads. In addition, the relationships between the equivalent vehicle load factors and sectional dimensions were also established by regression, and then used to obtain the proper design moments by vehicle loads. The member forces calculated by the proposed method are compared with the results of four different approaches mentioned in current design codes, with the objective to establish the relative efficiencies of the proposed method.

From the viewpoint of linear fracture mechanics, the crack propagation behavior of two different structures having the same K-a relationship could be considered identical. In this study the stress distribution in an infinitely wide cracked plate with the same K-a relationship as in a real structure is defined as the equivalent stress distribution. Fatigue life of a real structural element can be predicted by applying the equivalent stress distribution to a simple structural element, and performing a fatigue crack propagation analysis. The K-a relationship for a structural member can be estimated by a finite element method or a simplified prediction method. The validity to obtain effective crack driving stresses by using the equivalent stress-distribution is examined.
Accidents related to gas explosion are frequently happened in foreign countries and in Korea. For the evaluation and the analysis of gas explosions, TNT equivalent methods are used. In this study, the influence of the selection of chemical equation in TNT explosion and the selection of enthalpy of the products on the explosion energy, detonation pressure, velocity of detonation, and temperature was calculated. Depending on the chemical equations, the maximum detonation pressure can be 2 times higher than the minimum. As an example for applying TNT equivalent method, an explosion of methane gas in a confined volume was assumed. With the TNT equivalent, it was possible to predict the variation of peak overpressure and impulse with the distance from the explosion location.

This paper presents a fault location algorithm based on the adaptively estimated value of the local sequence source impedance for faults on a parallel transmission line. This algorithm uses only the local voltage and current signals of a faulted circuit. The remote current signals and the zero-sequence current of the healthy adjacent circuit are calculated by using the current distribution factors together with the local terminal currents of the faulted circuit. The current distribution factors consist of local equivalent source impedance and the others such as fault distance, line impedance and remote equivalent source impedance. It means that the values of the current distribution factors can change according to the operation condition of a power system. Consequently, the accuracy of the fault location algorithm is affected by the two values of equivalent source impedances, one is local source impedance and the other is remote source impedance. Nevertheless, only the local equivalent impedance can be estimated in this paper. A series of test results using EMTP simulation data show the effectiveness of the proposed algorithm. The proposed algorithm is valid for a double-circuit transmission line system where the equivalent source impedance changes continuously.

This paper deals with the temperature calculation using equivalent thermal network for surface mounted permanent magnet synchronous motor(SPMSM) under the steady-state condition. In the equivalent thermal network, heat sources are generated from copper loss and iron loss. Heat transfer consists of conduction, convection and radiation. However, radiation is neglected in this paper because its effect is much smaller than others. Although the heat transfer coefficient in conduction use material property, heat transfer coefficient in convection is difficult to measure due to the atmosphere and ambient condition. Temperatures of each region in SPMSM are measured by thermocouple in operating condition and the thermal resistances of convection are calculated by kirchhoff's current law(KCL) and experimental result. In order to verify the validation and reliability of the proposed equivalent thermal network, temperature which is calculated other load condition is compared with experimental results. Accordingly, temperatures of each region in other SPMSMs will be easily predicted by the proposed equivalent thermal network.

In this study, the computational structural dynamic modeling of floating offshore wind turbine system is presented using efficient equivalent modeling technique. Structural dynamic behaviors of the offshore floating platform with 5MW wind turbine system have been analyzed using computational multi-body dynamics based on the finite element method. The considered platform configuration of the present offshore wind turbine model is the typical spar-buoy type. Equivalent stiffness and damping properties of the floating platform were extracted from the results of the baseline model. Dynamic responses for the floating wind turbine models are presented and compared to investigate its structural dynamic characteristics. It is important shown that the results of the present equivalent modeling technique show good and reasonable agreements with those by the fully coupled analysis considering complex floating body dynamics.
IIn this study, used is the equivalent loading method based on the inherent strain to predict the welding deformation of panel members. Equivalent loads are computed from the inherent strain distribution around weld line, and then applied for the linear finite element analysis. Thermal deformation of panel members can be, of course, carried out through the rigorous thermal elasto-plastic analysis procedure but it is not practical in applying to predicting the welding deformation of large structures such as blocks found in a ship structure from view of computing time. The present equivalent load approach has been applied to flat plate model to verify the present approach, and to several curved plate models having the curvature in the welding direction to investigate the effect of the longitudinal curvature upon the weld-induced deformation. The results are compared with those by thermal elasto-plastic analysis. As far as the present results are concerned, it can be said that the present approach shows good agreement with the results by welding experiment and the rigorous thermal elasto-plastic analysis. The present approach has been also applied to predict the welding deformation of panel block as for application illustration to practical model.

The phase change heat transfer has been applied to the processes of machines as well as of manufacturing. The cycle in a heat exchanger includes the phase change phenomena of coolant for air conditioning, the solidification in casting process makes use of the characteristics of phase change of metal, and the welding also proceeds with melting and solidification. To predict the phase change processes, the experimental and numerical approaches are available. In the case of numerical analysis, the Enthalpy method is most widely applied to the phase change problem, comparing to the other numerical methods, i.e. the Equivalent Specific Heat method and the Temperature Recovery method. It's because that the Enthalpy method is accurate and straightforward. The Enthalpy method does not include any correction step while the correction of final temperature field is inevitable in the Equivalent Specific Heat method and the Temperature Recovery method. When the temperature field is to be used in the calculation, however, there must be converting process from enthalpy to temperature in the calculation scheme of Enthalpy method. In this study, an improved method for the Equivalent Specific Heat method is introduced whose method dose not include the correction steps and takes temperature as an independent variable so that the converting between enthalpy and temperature does not need any more. The improved method is applied to the solidification process of pure metal to see the differences of conventional and improved methods.

In end milling process, which is characterized by the use of a rotating tool, the undeformed chip thickness varies periodically with phase change of the tool. Although many efforts have concentrated on the study of end milling process, the analysis of shear and chip-tool friction behaviors has not been reported. Recently, a model has been proposed to simulate the shear and friction characteristics of an up-end milling process in terms of the equivalent oblique cutting. In the current study, the varying undeformed chip thickness and the cutting forces in a down-end milling process are replaced with the equivalent ones of oblique cutting. Then it is possible to simulate the shear and the chip-tool friction characteristics of a down-end milling process. The proposed model has been verified through two sets of cutting tests i.e., down-end milling and the equivalent oblique cutting tests. The experimental results show that the proposed model is suitable to analyze the shear and chip-tool frictional characteristics of down-end milling process. The specific cutting energy decreases with increase in equivalent undeformed chip thickness in a down-end milling process.
In order to investigate the accuracy and applicability of steel equivalent constitutive model, the calculated results were compared with typical tests of steel frames under static and dynamic loading patterns firstly. Secondly, four widely used models for time history analysis of steel frames were compared to discuss the applicability and efficiency of different methods, including shell element model, multi-scale model, equivalent constitutive model (ECM) and traditional beam element model (especially bilinear model). Four-story steel frame models of above-mentioned finite element methods were established. The structural deformation, failure modes and the computational efficiency of different models were compared. Finally, the equivalent constitutive model was applied in seismic incremental dynamic analysis of a ten-floor steel frame and compared with the cyclic hardening model without considering damage and degradation. Meanwhile, the effects of damage and degradation on the seismic performance of steel frame were discussed in depth. The analysis results showed that: damages would lead to larger deformations. Therefore, when the calculated results of steel structures subjected to rare earthquake without considering damage were close to the collapse limit, the actual story drift of structure might already exceed the limit, leading to a certain security risk. ECM could simulate the damage and degradation behaviors of steel structures more accurately, and improve the calculation accuracy of traditional beam element model with acceptable computational efficiency.
