  • Small-scale models have been frequently used for seismic performance tests because of limited testing facilities and economic reasons. However, there are not enough studies on similitude law for analogizing prototype structures accurately with small-scale models, although conventional similitude law based on geometry is not well consistent in the inelastic seismic behavior. When fabricating prototype and small-scale model of reinforced concrete structures by using the same material, added mass is demanded from a volumetric change and scale factor could be limited due to aggregate size. Therefore, it is desirable that different material is used for small-scale models. Thus, a modified similitude law could be derived depending on geometric scale factor, equivalent modulus ratio and ultimate strain ratio. In this study, compressive strength tests are conducted to analyze the equivalent modulus ratio of micro-concrete to normal-concrete. Then, equivalent modulus ratios are divided into multi-phase damage levels, which are basically dependent on ultimate strain level. Therefore, an algorithm adaptable to the pseudodynamic test, considering equivalent multi-phase similitude law based on seismic damage levels, is developed. Test specimens, consisted of prototype structures and 1/5 scaled models as a reinforced concrete column, were designed and fabricated based on the equivalent modulus ratios already defined. Finally quasistatic and pseudodynamic tests on the specimens are carried out using constant and variable modulus ratios, and correlation between prototype and small-scale model is investigated based on their test results. It is confirmed that the equivalent multi-phase similitude law proposed in this study could be suitable for seismic performance tests on small-scale models.

  • To evaluate the seismic capacity of a multistorey building structures in performance based seismic design, it is needed to convert MDOF model into equivalent SDOF model. This paper presents predictions for interstory drift of multistorey structures using method of converting a MDOF system into an equivalent SDOF model. The principal objective of this investigation is to evaluate appropriateness of converting method through performing nonlinear time history analysis of a multistory building structures and an equivalent SDOF model. Comparing the interstory drift of multistorey structures calculated by time history analysis and those evaluated by an equivalent SDOF model, the adequacy and the validity of converting method is verified. The conclusion of this study is following; A method of converting a MDOF system into an equivalent SDOF model through the nonlinear time history response analysis is valid. Inelastic first mode shapes are expected to be more accurate than elastic first mode shapes in obtaining interstory drift of multistorey structures from equivalent SDOF model.

  • For retaining wall designs, horizontal earth pressure induced by traffic loads over the walls is calculated based on equivalent uniform pressure height. The AASHTO LRFD design standards propose equivalent uniform pressure height of traffic loads; however, the equivalent uniform pressure height is calibrated using the US standard trucks. As the domestic standard trucks are different from the US standard trucks, in this study, new domestic equivalent uniform pressure height is proposed using the Boussinesq theory varying vehicle directions, Poisson's ratios of pavement layers, and retaining wall height. The proposed equivalent uniform pressure heights are generally higher than those proposed by the AASHTO design standards because the axle loads and their densities of two domestic standard trucks are higher than those of the US standard trucks. The most highest equivalent uniform pressure height was found for traffic direction perpendicular to longitudinal direction of retaining wall.

  • Fuel Cell Hybrid Vehicles (FCHVs) have become a major topic of interest in the automotive industry owing to recent energy supply and environmental problems. Several types of power management strategies have been developed to improve the fuel economy of FCHVs including optimal control strategy based on optimal control theory, rule-based strategy, and equivalent consumption minimization strategy (ECMS). The ECMS is applied in this study. This strategy is based on the heuristic concept that the usage of the electric energy can be exchanged to equivalent fuel consumption. This strategy is known as one of the promising solutions for real-time control of hybrid vehicles. The ECMS for an FCHV is introduced in this paper as well as the equivalent fuel consumption parameter. The relationship between the battery final state of charge (SOC) and the fuel consumption while changing the equivalent fuel consumption parameter is obtained for three different driving cycles. The function of the equivalent fuel consumption parameter is also discussed.

  • The power-train is the most important component of an agricultural tractor. In this study, the strength of the driving gear transmission of an 82 kW-class tractor was analyzed using equivalent torque during plow tillage. The load measurement system consisted of an engine revolution speed sensor, torque-meters, revolution speed sensors for four axles, and pressure sensors for two hydraulic pumps. The load data were measured during plow tillage for four speed stages: F2 (2.78 km/h), F5 (5.35 km/h), F7 (7.98 km/h), and F8 (9.75 km/h). Aspects of the gear-strength such as bending stress, contact stress, and safety factors were analyzed under two torque conditions: the equivalent torque at the highest plow load for the F8 speed stage and the maximum engine torque. The simulation results using KISSsoft showed that the maximum engine torque conditions had a lower safety factor than did the highest equivalent torque condition. The bending safety factors were > 1 at all gear stages, indicating that gear breakage did not occur under actual measured operating conditions, nor under the maximum torque conditions. However, the equivalent torque condition in the contact stress safety factor was > 1, and the maximum torque condition was < 1 at the first gear pair. The method of analysis using the equivalent torque showed lower stress and higher safety factor than did the method using maximum torque. Therefore, when designing a tractor by applying actual working torque, equivalent torque method would support more reliable product development.

  • The scattered light of solar radiance near the infrared ray area was observed to measure $H_2O$ and $O_2$ absorption lines. The changes of $H_2O$ and $O_2$ equivalent width were calculated on the basis of the measurement. $O_2$ equivalent width showed negative correlation with the amount of solar radiance; $O_2$ equivalent width had a tendency to diminish as the amount of the solar radiance increased and to increase as the amount of the solar radiance decreased. On the other hand, $H_2O$ equivalent width showed the positive correlation with the amount of solar radiance. Especially it was noted that the sum of equivalent width of absorption lines created by $H_2O$ and $O_2$ in a day was fairly constant. It is implied that the constant equivalent width is caused by the complementary development of photodissociation and recombination in $O_2$ and $H_2O$.

  • In this study, an equivalent plate element model has been developed for an efficient vibration analysis of a biaxial hollow slab. To this end, equivalent mass and stiffness of equivalent plate element models corresponding to solid element models of example biaxial hollow slabs were calculated. To verify the efficiency and accuracy of the equivalent plate element models, structural analyses of example structures were performed. Analytical results showed that the natural frequencies of the equivalent plate element models were very close to those of the solid element models. Time history analyses of example biaxial hollow slabs subjected to walking load were conducted using the equivalent plate element models and the solid element models, and the results were compared. It could be seen based on the analytical results that the equivalent plate element model could provide very accurate results compared to the solid element model with significantly reduced analysis time.

  • A equivalent stiffness modeling has been performed for extracting the equivalent stiffness properties which are orthotropic elastic model from a large scale wind turbine rotor blade so that structure model can be constructed more simply for the three dimensional static aeroelastic analysis. In order to present the procedure of equivalent stiffness modeling, NREL 5MW class wind turbine rotor having the three stiffness information which are flapewise, edgewise and torsional stiffness was chosen. This method is based on applying unit moment at the tip of the blade as well as fixing all degree of freedom at the blade root and calculating the displacement from the load analysis to obtain the elastic modulus corresponding to equivalent stiffness referred to the NREL reports on blade divided into 5 sections respectively. In addition, one section was divided into 3 parts and the trend functions were used to make the equivalent stiffness model more correctly and quickly. Through the comparison of stiffness between the reference values and calculated values from equivalent stiffness model, the investigation of the accuracy on the stiffness values and the efficiency for constructing the model was conducted.

  • Purpose. to describe the prevalence of refractive error according to aging in young children in South Korea. Methods : From July 2013 to June 2014, five hundred subjects( 250 male subjects, 250 female subjects; aged between 7 and 12 years) were performed in refraction test using the Auto-Refraction. Myopia, hyperopia, astigmatism, and anisometropia were defined as spherical equivalent(SE)${\leq}-0.50$ diopters, SE ${\geq}+2.00$ D, cylinder error ${\geq}0.75$ D and SE difference${\geq}1.00$ D between binocular eyes, respectively. Results. The refractive error by spherical equivalent among all subjects was myopia 80.41%, astigmatism 44.89%, emmetropia 18.27%, anisometropia 16.92%, and hyperopia 1.32%. The prevalence of myopia increased with age. but hyperopia was decrease. Myopia and astigmatism were much more common in male than females although the difference was not statically significant. Emmetropia and hyperopia were much more common in female than males although the difference was not statically significant. The prevalence of spherical equivalent was much common from -1.00 diopter to 0.99 diopter. On the other hand, the prevalence of myopia was much more than hyperopia. There was a statistical significance between 9 year and 10 year of female in the spherical equivalent power(p>0.05). In all another group of age, there was not a statistical significance as aging in spherical equivalent power(p>0.5). However, there was a statistical significance between male and female as age in the spherical equivalent power(P>0.01). Conclusions: Myopia was the most common refractive error in Korea young children, while hyperopia was decreased after 7 years. There was a statistical significance as age between male and female at spherical equivalent power(P> 0.01). these results suggested that the analysis of the refractive error as age at young children can give the useful diagnosis data for the correction of visual function.

  • This paper proposes a step-by-step method of determining the parameters of equivalent circuit which is considered the no load losses for the single phase induction motor which has the starting winding. This method is comprised of three steps, and the stator resistance which is measured by the method of voltage drop is treated as constant and the stator and the rotor leakage reactances are assumed to be the same in every step. The test results of no load and locked rotor test are used in the 1st and 2nd step, and the ratings of name plate of the motor are needed in the 3rd step. In the 1st step, the traditional equivalent circuit parameters are directly calculated by no load and locked rotor conditions. In the next step, five nonlinear simultaneous equations for five unknown parameters can be set up by no load and locked rotor equivalent circuits. These equations are solved by using the initial parameters obtained by the 1st step parameters. In the final step, three nonlinear simultaneous equations for rotor winding resistance, leakage reactance and no load losses component resistance can be set up by equivalent circuit under the rated operation. Three parameters are solved by using the 2nd step parameters. Thus, equivalent circuit parameters are gradually refined step by step. The validity of the proposed method is evaluated by comparing the computed values obtained by the equivalent circuit parameters with the experimental values of the load test.
