In this study, the graphite/epoxy prepregs were surface-treated using oxygen plasma, and optimal treatment time was determined measuring the contact angle on the prepreg surface. Interlaminar fracture behavior of surface-treated graphite/epoxy composites was compared with that of regular (untreated) graphite/epoxy composites. The results showed that the contact angle was a minimum when treated for 30 minutes. The interlaminar fracture toughness of surface-treated specimen was improved about 15% compared with that of regular specimen.
In this work, the surface modification of carbon/epoxy composites was investigated using UV (ultraviolet ray) surface treatment to increase adhesion strength between the carbon/epoxy composites and adhesives. After UV surface treatment, XPS (X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy) tests were performed to analyze the surface characteristics of the carbon/epoxy composites. Comparing adhesion strengths with the surface characteristics, the effects of the surface modification of carbon/epoxy composites by UV surface treatments on the adhesion strengths were investigated.
In this study, the friction and wear characteristics of pure epoxy and silica-filled epoxy resin composites with average silica particle diameter of $6-33{\mu}m$ were investigated at ambient temperature by pin-on-disc friction test. The cumulative wear volume, friction coefficient and wear rate of these materials against SiC abrasive paper were determined experimentally. The cumulative wear volume tended to increase nonlinearly with increase of sliding distance and depended on diameter of the silica particle for all these composites. The sliding wear tests of the materials demonstrated that the friction coefficient and the wear rate of silica filled epoxy composites were lower than those of the pure epoxy. silica filled epoxy.
The effects of ammonia-treated graphene oxide (GO) on composites based on epoxy resin were investigated. Ammonia solutions of different concentrations (14-28%) were used to modify GO. Nitrogen functional groups were introduced on the GO surfaces without significant structural changes. The ammonia-treated GO-based epoxy composites exhibited interesting changes in their mechanical properties related to the presence of nitrogen functional groups, particularly amine ($C-NH_2$) groups on the GO surfaces. The highest tensile and impact strength values were 42.1 MPa and 12.3 J/m, respectively, which were observed in an epoxy composite prepared with GO treated with a 28% ammonia solution. This improved tensile strength was 2.2 and 1.3 times higher than those of the neat epoxy and the non-treated GO-based epoxy composite, respectively. The amine groups on the GO ensure its participation in the cross-linking reaction of the epoxy resin under amine curing agent condition and enhance its interfacial bonding with the epoxy resin.
The wear behavior for the two types of composites, those are epoxy matrix composites filled with silica particles and aluminium matrix composites filled with SiC particles, were compared to investigate the wear mechanism for these composites. Especially, the effect of the volume fraction for the epoxy matrix composites and the particle size for the aluminium matrix composites according to the apply load and sliding velocity were investigated. Wear tests of the pin-on-disc mode were carried out and followed by scanning electron microscope observations for the worn surface. The addition of the fillers in the composites were improved the wear resistance significantly and changed the wear mechanism for the both composites. These results were identified by the observation of the worn surface after testing.
In this study, the physical and mechanical properties of bamboo fiber reinforced epoxy composites were studied. Composites were fabricated using short bamboo fiber at four different fiber loading (0 wt%, 15 wt%, 30 wt% and 45 wt%). It has been observed that few properties increases significantly with respect to fiber loading, however properties like void fraction increases from 1.71% to 5.69% with the increase in fiber loading. Hence, in order to reduce the void fraction, improve hardness and other mechanical properties silicon carbide (SiC) filler is added in bamboo fiber reinforced epoxy composites at four different weight percentages (0 wt%, 5 wt%, 10 wt% and 15 wt%) by keeping fiber loading constant (45 wt%). The significant improvement of hardness (from 46 to 57 Hv) at 15 wt%SiC, tensile strength (from 10.48 to 13.44 MPa) at 10 wt% SiC, flexural strength (from 19.93 to 29.53 MPa) at 5 wt%SiC and reduction of void fraction (from 5.69 to 3.91%) at 5 wt%SiC is observed. The results of this study indicate that using particulate filled bamboo fiber reinforced epoxy composites could successfully develop a composite material in terms of high strength and rigidity for light weight applications compared to conventional bamboo composites. Finally, SEM studies were carried out to evaluate fibre/matrix interactions.
The conductive polymer composites recently became increasingly to many fields of industry due to their electrical properties. To understand these properties of composites, electrical properties were measured and were studied relatively. Electrical conductivity measurements showed percolation phenomena. Percolation theories are frequently applied to describe the insulator-to-conductor transitions in composites made of a conductive filler and an insulating matrix. It has been showed both experimentally and theoretically that the percolation threshold strongly depends on the aspect ratio of filler particles. The critical concentration of percolation formed is defined as the percolation threshold. This paper was to study epoxy resin filled with copper. The experiment was made with vehicle such as epoxy resin replenished with copper powder and the study about their practical use was performed in order to apply to electric and electronic industry as well as general field. The volume specific resistance of epoxy resin composites was 3.065~13.325 in using copper powder. The weight loss of conductive composites happened from $350^{\circ}C{\sim}470^{\circ}C$.
The fracture toughness of three different kinds of epoxy-matrix composites containing the same volume fraction of reinforcement and the variation of fracture toughness of glass-carbon fiber/epoxy hybrid composites due to the change of test temperature and different glass fiber content were investigated in this study. Glass fiber/epoxy composite provided much higher fracture toughness than that of other composites because of the high strain at failure of glass fiber. Particularly the carbon fiber/epoxy composite exhibited the low fracture toughness caused by the low strain energy absorbing capacity of carbon fiber. And it was found that the strain at failure of reinforcement and interfacial delamination absorbing a significant amount of impact energy played an important role to increase fracture toughness of composites. The fracture toughness of the glass-carbon fiber hybrid composites increased with increasing the glass fiber content and decreased with raising the test temperature. The residual stress arising from the different thermal expansion between the matrix and reinforcement influenced the fracture toughness of composites.
