Salmonella enterica serovar Typhimurium DT104 (Salmonella Typhimurium DT104 or DT104) has been emerging as a common pathogen for human in Korea since 1997. In order to compare the genomic relationship and to search for the dominant strains in Korea, we conducted pulsed-field gel electrophoresis (PFGE) and IS200 fingerprinting of 25 epidemiological unrelated isolates from human and animals from Korea and cattle from America. Two Salmonella Typhimurium DT104 isolates from human in Korea and all 8 isolates from American cattle had indistinguishable patterns from the PFGE and IS200 fingerprinting but multidrug-resistant Salmonella Typhimurium isolates, including DT104, from Korean animals had diverse genetic patterns. The data suggest that a dominant DT104 strain might have circulated between Korean and American cattle and that it had a high level of clonality.
Purpose: This study aimed to identify patterns of diagnosis and to explore risk factors for type 2 diabetes beyond the postpartum period in women with a previous history of gestational diabetes, and to identify differences in such risk factors between early and late-onset (aged <45 and ${\geq}45$). Methods: Using epidemiological data from the Korean Genome and Epidemiology Study, a retrospective analysis of 175 women with various timings of type 2 diabetes diagnosis was performed. Results: The average age ($42.6{\pm}10.6$) at type 2 diabetes diagnosis was earlier than the general population, and obesity was prevalent with marked weight gains around 35 years old. Longer duration of breastfeeding was observed in women with late-onset of type 2 diabetes. Conclusion: For prevention of type 2 diabetes, early intervention is required, and modifiable factors such as weight control and breastfeeding should be taken into consideration for intervention strategies.

Over the past few decades, dramatic socioeconomic developments have resulted in the change of epidemiological transition from infectious to chronic diseases as leading causes of death in Korea. Behavioral factors, particularly smoking, diet and activity patterns, alcohol consumptions are among the most prominent contributors to mortality. Since after landmark reports on health promotion in Canada and USA during the 1970s and 1980s, which heralded the commitment of governments to health promotion, many studies have been made on it.
In order to the investigate epidemiological characteristics of methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA), 31 strains of Staphylococcus aureus were isolated from the equipments of two hospitals in Chonbuk. And their antimicrobial resistance patterns against 7 kinds of antimicrobial agents and the identification of MRSA by polymerase chain reaction (PCR) were studied. Seven strains among 10 strains of methicillin resistant Staphylococcus aureus showed 554 bp DNA which was a part of mecA gene in PCR analysis.
Kawasaki disease (KD) is an acute, self-limited vasculitis of unknown etiology that occurs predominantly in infants and young children. Initially described in 1967 by Dr. Tomisaku Kawasaki, it is now the most common cause of acquired heart disease among children in developed nations. Although KD has been reported across all racial and ethnic groups, the incidence of KD is more common among Asians, which suggests differences of race-specific susceptibility. The prevalence of the disease varies considerably among different Asian countries, and there is a higher rate of KD reported in Asian countries such as Japan and Korea than in other countries. In Korea, a nationwide epidemiological study has been conducted every three years since the 1990s by the Korean Pediatric Heart Association to determine the epidemiologic patterns and incidence rate of KD in Korea. It was thus found in a recent survey (2003-2005) that the average annual incidence of 105.0/100,000 Korean children under the age of five years was the second-highest reported rate in the world, after Japan.
Inflammation is one mechanism through which cancer is initiated and progresses, and is implicated in the etiology of other conditions that affect cancer risk and prognosis, such as type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular disease, and visceral obesity. Emerging human evidence, primarily epidemiological, suggests that walnuts impact risk of these chronic diseases via inflammation. The published literature documents associations between walnut consumption and reduced risk of cancer, and mortality from cancer, diabetes, and cardiovascular disease, particularly within the context of the Mediterranean Diet. While encouraging, follow-up in human intervention trials is needed to better elucidate any potential cancer prevention effect of walnuts, per se. In humans, the far-reaching positive effects of a plant-based diet that includes walnuts may be the most critical message for the public. Indeed, appropriate translation of nutrition research is essential for facilitating healthful consumer dietary behavior. This paper will explore the translation and application of human evidence regarding connections with cancer and biomarkers of inflammation to the development of dietary guidance for the public and individualized dietary advice. Strategies for encouraging dietary patterns that may reduce cancer risk will be explored.
Breast cancer primary prevention is a high research priority due to the high psychological and economic costs. The disease is a multistep process and several risk factors have been recognized. Over the past three decades numerous studies have investigated the association of lifestyle with breast cancer, showing independent effects of various factors. We report here a summary of the present state of knowledge on the role of lifestyle patterns, such as physical activity, diet, smoking, hormone therapy, and experience of psychological stress in the modulation of breast cancer in women, and discuss commonly accepted biological mechanisms hypothesized as responsible for the associations. The findings indicate that regular physical activity of moderate to vigorous intensity is probably linked with the decreased breast cancer risk among postmenopausal females and suggestive for a decrease of the risk in premenopausal women. In contrast, the consumption of high-fat diet, alcohol intake, and use of combined estrogen and synthetic progestagen hormonal therapy may increase the risk. Epidemiological findings dealing with a role of smoking and experience of psychological stress are conflicting.

The genomes of leptospiral field isolates from Korea belonging to serogroup Icterohaemorrhagiae (21 strains) and serogroup Canicola (1 strain) were analysed and compared by restriction enzyme analysis with EcoRI and HindIII as digesting enzymes. One isolate belonging to serogroup Canicola showed the same pattern as serovar portlandvere. All 21 isolates belonging to serogroup Icterohaemorrhagiae showed almost same patterns as Leptospira serovar lai from China, But with very slight differences 21 isolates could be classified into 8 subtypes and these grouping seems to reflect the differences in epidemiological niche. And also the geographical data consisted with the grouping into 8 subtypes. According to our results, we concluded that the restriction endonuclease analysis of chromosomal DNA will be an accurate and reliable method to compare and classify pathogenic leptospires.
Although most enterovirus infections are not serious enough to be life threatening, several enteroviruses such as enterovirus 71 are responsible for severe, potentially life-threatening disease. The epidemic patterns of enteroviruses occur regularly during the year, but they may change due to environmental shifts induced by climate change due to global warming. Therefore, enterovirus epidemiological studies should be performed continuously as a basis for anti-viral studies. A great number of synthesized antiviral compounds that work against enteroviruses have been developed but only a few have demonstrated effectiveness in vivo. No proven effective antiviral agents are available for enterovirus disease therapy. The development of a new antiviral drug is a difficult task due to poor selective toxicity and cost. To overcome these limitations, one approach is to accelerate the availability of other existing antiviral drugs approved for antiviral effect against enteroviruses, and the other way is to screen traditional medicinal plants.
Many cultures have traditions that encompass the use of herbs, spices, and other plants for medicinal purposes. From the ancient past to the present medicinal knowledge has been passed down to new generations in the form of shamans, medicine men, healers, and the like. In the past decade there has been a surge of scientific interest in complementary and alternative medicine, much of which has its origins in traditional medicine. It has been recognized for some time that dietary patterns and content affect cancer risk. Epidemiological studies have strongly suggested that the fruit and vegetable content of the diet associates with reduced risk for colon, lung, prostate, and other cancers. Many different types of cellular mechanisms have been postulated by which compounds in botanicals can prevent cancer. Mechanisms particular to the prevention of colon cancer will be addressed in this review.
