Traditional Korean medicine theory based-therapeutic potential of Gung-Gwi-Tang on postpartum obesity: psychosocial aspects of postpartum obesity

  • Obesity is psychological and socioeconomic problems as well as health problems related to physical disease and disorder. The obesity epidemic, including a marked increase in the prevalence of obesity among pregnant women, represents a critical public health problem throughout the world. Gung-Gui-Tang (GGT), a prescription of traditional Korean medicine, has been used to treat dizziness due to loss of blood as well as static blood after childbirth. However, the therapeutic potential of GGT on postpartum obesity has not been fully elucidated in an experimental model. In our research, GGT inhibited the increases of body weight and adipose tissues in postpartum mice fed a high-fat diet. GGT also inhibited the elevations of plasma lipid profiles such as triglyceride, low-density lipoprotein cholesterol, total cholesterol, and glutamate pyruvate transaminase. Overall, these results provide evidence that GGT can help to inhibit postpartum obesity and open new perspective to recover the shape of mother into the moment of conception.

  • In this paper we consider a model with demographics for sexually transmitted diseases (STDs) spread on scale-free networks. We derive the epidemic threshold, which is depend on the birth rate, the natural death rate and other parameters. The absence of a threshold in infinite scale-free network is proved. For a hard cut off scale-free network, we also analyze the stability of disease-free equilibrium and the persistence of STDs infection. Two immunization schemes, proportional scheme and targeted vaccination, are studied and compared. We find that targeted strategy is more effective on scale-free networks.

  • The incidence of complications of measles is about 4% and most of the chief complications are in the respiratory system, such as pneumonia, bronchitis. One of other potential dangers of measles is exacerbation of an existing pulmonary tuberculosis. We report a case of exacerbated pulmonary tuberculosis in 15-year old male child after contracting measles during epidemic in year 2001.

  • Last year, an epidemic of infantile urinary stone disease developed in China. Investigation revealed that melamine-tainted diary product caused urinary stone in these infants. Young infants were susceptible to the melamine toxicity and dehydration or other stone-prone factors aggravated the toxicity. Melamine-related urinary stones were small, multiple, and mainly composed of uric acid, thus conservative treatment of hydration and urine alkalinization worked well in majority of the patients.

  • Corythucha marmorata Uhler was newly recorded in Korea as a invasive species at Pohang-si, Gyeongsangbuk-do, Korea in 2011 and at Changwon-si, Gyeongsangnam-do, Korea in 2012. Adults of this species show reticular forewings with a lot of transparent membranes and also show pterigoid process of paranotum with strong processes. This invasive species was originated from North America, and then intruded into Europe and Japan. This species is presumed became an epidemic horticultural pest at present and it is injuring almost of Asteraceae leaves. It was presumed that the invasion of Corythucha marmorata into Korea was prior to September of 2011.

  • In this paper, we aim to construct a nonstandard finite difference (NSFD) scheme to solve numerically a mathematical model for cholera epidemic dynamics. We first show that if the basic reproduction number is less than unity, the disease-free equilibrium (DFE) is locally asymptotically stable. Moreover, we mainly establish the global stability analysis of the DFE and endemic equilibrium by using suitable Lyapunov functionals regardless of the time step size. Finally, numerical simulations with different time step sizes and initial conditions are carried out and comparisons are made with other well-known methods to illustrate the main theoretical results.

  • Hypertension is a major risk factor of atherosclerosis which results in cardiovascular disease, and remains a major health problem worldwide. While children are more likely to have secondary hypertension, recent studies support the theory that the prevalence of essential hypertension in children and adolescents is increasing with the global epidemic of childhood obesity, and close attention is needed. Evaluation of hypertension in the pediatric age group should be guided by the age at presentation, and renal diseases must be considered in every child with hypertension, because of the prevalence of renovascular and renal parenchymal disorders as the etiology in any age group. The majority of children with chronic kidney disease are hypertensive, and many have associated end organ damage. Thus, once hypertension has been confirmed, end organ care as well as pharmacologic therapy must be continued. In renovascular hypertension, as cure could be gained with surgical/endovascular intervention, accurate diagnosis is important and it is recommended that every suspected child should undergo angiography.

  • Of the assumptions commonly used in continuous infection model, the least likely to be even approximately true in large population, is that of homogeneous mixing. In this paper, We investigate a model for the spread of infection amongst a population which is divided into classes, such that the individuals of each class mix homogeneously amongst themselves, but mix to a lesser degree with individuals of other class. The stochastic model in this form is intractable and approximations are made, yielding results in reasonable agreement with simulation trials.

A Direction Entropy-Based Forwarding Scheme in an Opportunistic Network

  • In an opportunistic network, one of the most challenging issues is the equilibrium of the network traffic and transmission delay for forwarding messages. To resolve this problem, we propose a new forwarding scheme, called the direction entropy-based forwarding scheme (DEFS), using the main direction and direction entropy based on the information collected about the directions of the nodes in the network. Since each node sends a message to another node with a different location and less direction entropy, DEFS utilizes those nodes that are more likely to travel to various locations to forward the messages to the destination nodes. Experiments were performed on the network simulator NS-2. The results show that DEFS provides better balance than the typical forwarding schemes, such as Epidemic, PRoPHET, and WAIT.
