Background: In this study, we examined the effects of various enzymes on chemical conversions of ginsenosides in ginseng extract prepared by amylases. Methods: Rapidase, Econase CE, Viscozyme, Ultraflo L, and Cytolase PCL5 were used for secondary enzymatic hydrolysis after amylase treatment of ginseng extract, and ginsenoside contents, skin permeability, and chemical compositions including total sugar, acidic polysaccharide, and polyphenols were determined on the hydrolyzed ginseng extract. Results: Rapidase treatment significantly elevated total ginsenoside contents compared with the control (p < 0.05). In particular, deglycosylated ginsenosides including Rg3, which are known as bioactive compounds, were significantly increased after Rapidase treatment (p < 0.05). The Rapidase-treated group also increased the skin permeability of polyphenols compared with the control, showing the highest level of total sugar content among the enzyme treatment groups. Conclusion: This result showed that Rapidase induced the conversion of ginsenoside glycosides to aglycones. Meanwhile, Cytolase PCL5 and Econase treatments led to a significant increase of uronic acid (acidic polysaccharide) level. Taken together, our data showed that the treatments of enzymes including Rapidase are useful for the conversion and increase of ginsenosides in ginseng extracts or products.

Effects of aqueous ammonia soaking treatments to yellow poplar (Liriodendron tulipifera L.) were investigated to focus on chemical compositional changes and enzymatic hydrolysis characteristics changes by this treatment. Treatment temperature and time were main variables. At 3 different levels of aqueous ammonia soaking temperature and time ($145^{\circ}C$ -1 h, $90^{\circ}C$ -16 h and $45^{\circ}C$ - 6 days), lower temperature and longer soaking time led to more xylan removal based on carbohydrate compositional analysis. However, at higher temperature treatment led to more enzymatic saccharification of cellulose to glucose by commercial cellulose mixtures (Celluclast 1.5L and Novozym 342 from Novozyme, Denmark). Cellulose hydrolysis was gradually increased with increasing enzymatic hydrolysis time but xylan hydrolysis was leveled out at early stage (less than 10 h) of enzymatic hydrolysis.

Enzymatic deinking method can avoids the alkaline environment as usual required in chemical deinking, which consequently cuts chemical costs and reduced the white water pollution. The electrostatic wastepaper was dinked with commercial cellulolytic enzymes and surfactant in neutral pH and the effectiveness of deinking and the physical properties of deinked pulp were evaluated. The disintegrating efficiency of the electrostatic wastepaper in neutral pH was enhanced with enzyme treatments. Although the freeness of deinked pulp with enzymes was higher than that of deinked pulp with chemical de inking agents, the brightness of the enzymatic deinked pulp was slightly lower than that of the chemical deinked pulp. But, by additions of nonionic surfactants, the brightness of deinked pulp was increased with less residual ink particles and mechanical properties of enzymatic deinked pulp was improved compared to the deinked pulp of conventional alkaline method.

The effect of steam explosion coupled with alkali (1% sodium hydroxide, 1% potassium hydroxide and 15% sodium carbonate) or organosolv solvent (85% methanol, 70% ethanol and dioxane) on the production of sugar, changes in the chemical composition of M. sinensis were evaluated. The steam explosion coupled with 1% potassium hydroxide and dioxane were better as compared with other treatments based on the removals of acid insoluble lignin, and about 89.0% and 85.4%. Enzymatic hydrolysis of steam explosion with 1% potassium hydroxide and dioxane treated M. sinensis, gave a 98.0% and 96.5% of glucose conversion, respectively. These results suggested that pretreatment of M. sinensis with either potassium hydroxide or dioxane could be a promising pretreatment method for glucose production.
Since the enzymatic degradation of microbial poly(hydroxylalkanoate)s (PHAs), such as poly[(R)-3-hydroxybutyrate] and poly[(R)-3-hydroxybutyrate-co-3-hydroxyvalerate] initially occurs by a surface erosion process, their degradation behaviors can be controlled by the change of surface property. In order to control the rate of enzymatic degradation, plasma modification technique was applied to change the surface property of microbial PHAs. The surface hydrophobic and hydrophilic properties of PHA films were introduced by $CF_3H$ and $O_2$ plasma exposures, respectively. The enzymatic degradation was carried out at $37^{\circ}C$ in 0.1 M potassium phosphate buffer (pH 7.4) in the presence of an extracellular PHB depolymerase purified from Alcaligenes facalis T1. The results showed that the significant retardation of initial enzymatic erosion of $CF_3H$ plasma-treated PHAs was observed due to the hydrophobicity and the enzyme inactivity of the fluorinated surface layers while the erosion rate of $O_2$ plasma-treated PHAs was not accelerated.
This study is to compare characteristics of saccharification reactions applying to enzymatic hydrolysis of pretreated fallen leaves for bio-ethanol production. It experimented pretreatment of acid, alkaline in the chemical. This experiment includes preteatment of acid and alkaline in chemical, soaking, shaking and autoclaving method, which were applied to biomass. In result, the glucose production from alkaline-NaOH method was 263 mg glucose/ g biomass comparing with them of acid-HCl method. Thus, alkaline-NaOH method is superior than the acid-HCl method for chemical preteatment of fallen leaves. Also, when various chemical treatments were compared, they were all. Based on the results of this study, we found that leaves, one of biomass, are possible in pretreatment and enzymatic hydrolysis process, and they are likely to affect bio-ethanol production in the future.
Biochemical methods were selected to evaluate the role of exopolymeric substances in the stability of biofilms used in bioremediation processes. Biofilms of Thiomonas arsenivorans formed on pozzolana were thus treated with pronase (protein target), lectins (Con A or PNA), calcofluor or periodic acid (polysaccharides target), DNase (DNA target), and lipase (triglycerides target). Neither protease nor DNase treatments had any effect on bacterial adhesion. Lectins and calcofluor treatments mainly affected young biofilms. Lipase treatment had a noticeable effect on biofilm stability whatever the biofilm age. Results suggest that it would be an increased resistance of mature biofilms that protects them from external attacks.
Kimchi is a traditional fermented vegetable in Korea. It has unique taste and flavor due to the variability of raw vegetable, subingredient and their ratio of combination. Fermentation method have very critical effect on these charicteristics. Overall taste of Kimchi is also influenced by texture. In this paper, the changes in texture of Kimchis were reviewed related to pectic substance, enzymatic activities and other chemical changes during the fermentation of Kimchi. Moreover, treatments to prevent softening of Kimchi texture such as preheating, CaCl$_2$ addition, their combination effect and chitosan addition were summarized from the literatures.

Cell walls of microalgae consist of a polysaccharide and glycoprotein matrix providing the cells with a formidable defense against its environment. Anaerobic digestion (AD) of microalgae is primarily inhibited by the chemical composition of their cell walls containing biopolymers able to resist bacterial degradation. Adoption of pre-treatments such as thermal, thermal hydrolysis, ultrasound and enzymatic hydrolysis have the potential to remove these inhibitory compounds and enhance biogas yields by degrading the cell wall, and releasing the intracellular algogenic organic matter (AOM). This paper preproposal stage investigated the effect of different pre-treatments on microalgae cell wall, and their impact on the quantity of soluble biomass released in the media and thus on the digestion process yields. This Paper present optimum approach to degradation of the cell wall by ultra-sonication with practical design specification parameter for ultrasound based pretreatment system. As a result of this paper presents, a microalgae system in a wastewater treatment flowsheet for residual nutrient uptake can be justified by processing the waste biomass for energy recovery. As a conclusion on this result, Low energy harvesting technologies and pre-treatment of the algal biomass are required to improve the overall energy balance of this integrated system.
