Traditionally Jeju island has a mild oceanic climate throughout the year and famous as worldwide resort area bacause of its pure natural environment and dramatic coastal scenery. But unpredicted coastal erosion problem, caused by variation of environmental conditions from construction of coastal structure and renovation of the existing ports, has raised its head above the water, and is becoming serious these days just like other coastal area in Korea. The phenomena happen here along the seaside of southern part of the island show that severe changes in coastal line from erosion and even witnessed the coastal cliff failure. In advanced countries, coastal engineers and researchers have studied deeply about this kind of problem for a long time. However, as it is not sot active in Korea and lack of research data, there exists difficulties on building protection methods and thoughtless constructions might make it more complicated and fatal to the coastal environment. In this study, we investigated some case studies of other countries and intended to induce and propose some integral protection methods for coastline erosion, considering environmentally sound and water friendly way of developement such as artificial reef, floating breakwater, and double cellblock breakwater. Finally, we made analysis on the proposed methods with numerical model test and evaluation on the feasibility of each method.
As a part of efforts to reduce the global emissions of greenhouse gases, the Kyoto Protocol was signed by major developed countries ("Annex I" countries). According to the Kyoto protocol, the Emission Trading Scheme that derives a trading market of the $CO_2$ emission rights is appeared. It causes that business institutions give lots of efforts to reduce $CO_2$ by using new environmentally sound technologies or increasing efficiency in production. On the while there have been several studies trying to develop a methodology to measure the effect of $CO_2$ reduction and its monetary value. In this research we suggest ECRE (Evaluation of $CO_2$ Reduction in E-transformation) model which can measure the $CO_2$ reduction effect through the introduction of G2B system. ECRC model was developed based on the IPCC methodology. ECRC model measures the two major effects of the $CO_2$ reduction which are '$CO_2$ reduction effect from transportation' and '$CO_2$ reduction effect from the decrease of paper use'. In this paper, we calculate the economic effect of $CO_2$ reduction with the case of the G2B system in Korea. This research suggests a basic methodology to measure the $CO_2$ reduction performance for the e-transformed institution.
We need to analyze the ecological characteristics in the basin of agricultural reservoir that include urbanized area, agricultural area and fringe area, etc. The purpose of this study is not only that presenting the methods of basin ecosystem management but also suggesting ecosystem management plan proposals for the water quality based on analysis of ecological characteristics. As the results of analysis, the urbanized area(the ratio of area(ROA): 14.0%) is most likely to possibility of water pollution, then followed by paddy fields(ROA: 65.5%) where a wide spread up-basin(or up-stream), farmlands(ROA: 11.3%), farm buildings(ROA: 5.7%) and orchard(ROA: 3.9%). According to those, we investigated the impact degree of water pollutants. Thus, we were able to classify 5 types through considering the biotope assessment and the hydrosphere basin assessment, i.e. the level of priority control for source pollution. As a result, the source pollution intensive management area(11.3%) where are adjacent waterfront has caused water pollution, however, most importantly, it is necessary to control in source pollution management area(0.6%) that are away from waterfront. In conclusion, according to the these results, the plan of basin ecosystem management for the water quality should be included the plan of ecosystem conservation and restoration such as improving inhabitants function, controling environmentally sound basin management, promoting biodiversity.
Turfgrass provides various beneficial effects to our societies such as recreation, aesthetic components, and other public service. Diseases in turfgrass is the major issue, which cause quality problems in golf courses, playgrounds, parks and cultivation areas, and tremendous cost is required to prevent the diseases. Research activity and investigation for turfgrass disease remain to be further attributed when compared to other crops in Korea. In this study, we present previously reported turfgrass diseases researches, especially caused by fungal pathogens, and review the history of turfgrass research activity in Korea to contribute future turfgrass research direction. Research papers were searched and analyzed using Korea Educational and Research Information Service (www.riss.kr). More than eighty papers presented turfgrass diseases and among the papers, 50% were published in Korean Journal of Turfgrass. Half of the papers reported turfgrass diseases control. Research articles about large patch disease were the majority (36%), followed dollar spot (18%), Pythium blight (10%) and Typhular blight (8%). Number of the first disease reports in Korea were total fifteen. Total 542 fungicides have been registered in Korea to prevent turfgrass diseases and most of the fungicides were for brown patch, rust, yellow patch, dollar spot, snow mold, summer patch, anthracnose, Pythium blight, powdery mildew and algae. And we will also need to conduct ecological studies on turf diseases and to develop control methods with improved efficacy and environmentally-friend sound. Researches on epidemiology of turfgrass diseases which deals with the incidence, distribution, and interactions with other factors will be also greatly favored for precise control prescription, timing of control and use of less pesticides.
We analyzed physical and chemical properties of sediments from 20 subtidal points and 9 beach points to define sedimentary environment between summer and winter of Shindu Marine Protected Area. Means of particle size in summer were generally finer than winter's. There was distinctively spatial pattern that particle sizes became increasingly fine as west direction and apart from beach in summer, but this pattern was not shown in winter. Coarse sediments were prevailed in winter. To explain these patterns, we propose possible two causes which are spatially different water depth condition related with seasonal wave climate or fine sediment input from an estuary located in south of this area during summer rainy season. Contents of exchangeable cations of sediment in summer were shown $Na^+$>$Ca^{2+}$>$Mg^{2+}$>$K^+$ in order, but those of winter were shown $Na^+$>$Mg^{2+}{\fallingdotseq}Ca^{2+}$>$K^+$. Contents of $Na^+$, $Mg^{2+}$, and $K^+$ were related with contents of fine sediment and showed high correlation in each other. These relations were not shown between $Ca^{2+}$ and others. Our results show that there are spatio-temporal unique sedimentary environments between subtidal zone, beach, and dune near Shindu Marine Protected Area. Therefore, we should consider these spatio-temporal patterns for environmentally sound management of Shindu coastal system.

Entomopathogenic nematodes (Heterorhabditis sp. Gyeongsan strain, Steinernema carpocapsae GSN1 strain, S. feltiae Monteri strain, S. glaseri Dongrae strain, S. longicaudum Nonsan strain and S. monticolum Jiri strain) were evaluated for the environmentally sound control of sawfly, Arge captiva, A. pagana pagana and A. similis in the laboratory and pot. The corrected mortality of 3rd instar of Arge captiva larva was 100% at 5 days after treatment with S. carpocapsae GSN1 strain and S. feltiae Monteri strain in Petri dish. The mean numbers of established infective juveniles (Ijs) of S. glaseri Dongrae and S. carpocapsae GSN1 strain in a Arge captiva larva were 10.2 and 4.2 Ijs/larva, respectively. Pathogenicity of S. carpocapsae GSN1 strain was different larval stage, i.e., $LC_{50}$ value of S. carpocapsae GSN1 strain against 2nd, 3rd and 4th instar of A. pagana pagana was 11.5, 9.3, and 8.4 Ijs, respectively. Mortality of Arge captiva, A. pagana pagana and A. similis were 72.5, 85.0 and 85.0% by S. carpocapsae GSN1 strain at the $2{\times}10^9Ijs/ha$, respectively, in the pot.

This study aims to find basic data for using the quantitative assessment of the sustainability and establishing the systematic index of the planning for local cities to consider the environmentally sound and sustainable development. The research designs to review professional responding to surveys preceded by separate questionnaires and interviews from book reviews, and suggests to make an assessment model of the sustainability for local cities. The research found consequently as follows. Firstly, the research survey items were decides totally 52, grouped 9 assessmental issues and distributed under 4 assessmental domains for the sustainability from the references of book reviews. Secondly, the research result concentrated on the followings from the professional responding to surveys. 1. A most influent factor is the distribution of animals and plants in a nature domain. The next influent factors are the ratio of mass-transportation systems, the numbers of the species of animals and plants, the acreage of conservative forestry, the numbers of reused water resources, and the usage number of water supply, orderly in the nature domain. 2. A most influent factor is the usage number of synthetic detergents in a pollution domain. The next influent factors are the volume of waste water, the number of registered vehicles, the degree of soil pollution, and the charge of development imposition, orderly in the pollution domain. 3. A most influent factor is the acreage of athletic facilities, in an urban domain. the next influent factors are the acreage of recreational facilities, the number and acreage of cultural assets, the number of cultural facilities, the acreage of landscape conservation area, the charge of cultural asset management, orderly in the urban domain. 4. A most influent factor is the number of waste disposal facilities in a participation domain. The next influent factors are the capacity of reused waste, the usage of synthetic detergents, the ratio of waste water disposal, orderly in the participation domain. 5. A most contributed influent domain to the assessment of the sustainability for local cities is the urban domain. The next influent domains are nature domain, participation domain, and pollution domain, orderly in the contribution of the assessment of the sustainability. But, the pollution domain is little relationship with the sustainability. Therefore, it is clear that the abundant greens and the improved level of culture are dominant influences on the sustainabiligy, as like improving the ratio of roadside trees, the acreage of parks, and enlarging the number of cultural facilities.
Unlike water or air quality standards that have been established by legislation using potential human health impact as the primary criterion, soil quality depends on the soils primary function and its relevant environmental factors, which is much more site- and soil specific. A properly characterized soil quality assessment system should serve as an indicator of the soil capacity to produce safe and nutritious food, to enhance human and animal health, and to overcome degrative processes. For our proposed example, a high quality soil with regard to maintaining an adequate soil productivity as a food production resources must accommodate soil and water properties, food chain, sustainability and utilization, environment, and profitability, that (i) facilitate water transfer and absorption, (ii) sustain plant growth, (iii) resist physical degradation of soil, (iv) produce a safe food resources, (v) cost-effective agricultural management. Possible soil quality indicators are identified at several levels within the framework for each of these functions. Each indicator is assigned a priority or weight that reflects its relative importance using a multi-objective approach based on principles of systems to be considered. To do this, individual scoring system is differentiated by the several levels from low to very high category or point scoring ranging from 0 to 10, And then weights are multiplied and products are summed to provide an overall soil quality rating based on several physical and chemical indicators. Tlne framework and procedure in developing the soil quality assessment are determined by using information collected from an alternative and conventional farm practices in the regions. The use of an expanded framework for assessing effects of other processes, management practices, or policy issues on soil quality is also considered. To develop one possible form for a soil quality index, we should permit coupling the soil characteristics with assessment system based on soil properties and incoming and resident chemicals. The purpose of this paper is to discuss approaches to defining and assessing soil quality and to suggest the factors to be considered.

Organic compost has been widely applied to the cropland because it has been thought as Environmentally Sound Agriculture (ESA) in Korea. However, many field researches have been done to investigate water quality impacts of organic compost uses, compared to those from chemical fertilizer applications. It was found that pollutant loads from organic compost applied croplands were higher than those from chemical fertilizer applied areas. However, there might be other unknown factors affecting the results since the experiments were performed at the outside fields. In this study, indoor rainfall experiments using the Norton rainfall simulator systems were done to minimize and exclude errors from unknown sources by controlling soil characteristics, rainfall amount, rainfall intensity, and fertilizer treatments. The amounts of surface runoff and groundwater percolated from 10% and 20% slope plots were measured and water quality samples were collected and analyzed for BOD, COD, and T-P. Flow weighted mean concentration (FWMC) values were computed to assess effects of different fertilizer treatments. It was found that average concentration values of BOD were 5.57 mg/L from chemical fertilizer treated plot and 8.08 mg/L from organic compost treated plots. For 10% slope, FWMC BOD values from organic compost treated plots were higher by 29.9% than those from chemical fertilizer treated plots. For 20% slope, FWMC BOD values from organic plots were higher by 38.8% than those from chemical fertilizer plots. FWMC BOD values for 20% slope plots were higher than those from those for 10% slope plots. The similar trends were found for COD and T-P. In Korea, excessive use of organic compost has caused extremely high levels of organic matter contents at the cropland. Organic compost are usually applied to the cropland to improve soil quality, while chemical fertilizer is applied to help crop growth. Since organic compost is very slow in releasing its nutrients to the soil, farmers usually apply excessive organic compost for immediate effects and maximum crop yields, which has been causing soil and water quality degradations. Therefore, thorough investigations for better nutrient management plans are needed to develop the ESA strategy in Korea.

The major problems of food crop cultivation in Korea are low yield of most crops except rice. inefficient cultivation techniques for aged farmers. and low international competibility. Therefore, development of cultivation techniques of food crops should aim the yield. quality improvement, labor reduction and production cost. The primary issue for increasing the yield of soybean, barely and wheat is to reduce the yield gap between the farmer's yield and recommended ones of experiment station. More advanced cultivation techniques needs to be developed. and/or the conventional breeding methods to be reconsidered. The newly developed labor-saving mechanized technique needs to reduce labor hours , and the cost of agricultural implements and machineries. In other words the labor-saving mechanized technique should be developed based on the improvement of total farming system as well as systemic fundamental innovation of cultural methods. The efficiency of solar energy use in food production of Korea in 1997 is as low as $0.52{\%}$ so there is much room to increase yield. It is recommendable that the concept of food Production should be changed to energy Producing efficiency Per unit area basis from volume and weight of food materials. Moreover, introduction of resonable cropping system is needed to increase yield of main crops, farmer's income, solar energy use efficiency, and decrease of land service expenditure. Current cropping system emphasized on economic crops. especially in vegetables , is not desirable for resonable use of arable land. stability of agricultural management and staple food crop self-sufficiency ratio. It is desirable to increase food crops . that are energy of carbohydrate and protein rich and land dependent crops. in cropping system. And the agronomist should develop the cultural methods to replace food crops for food self-sufficiency and stable farming management instead of economic crops in current cropping system. Low-input and environmentally-sound crop cultivation techniques, especially nitrogen-reducing culture technique which is directly related to food crop quality, also needs to be developed urgently. The extended cultivation of corn in upland and barely and wheat in lowland as a feed stuffs is recommended to prevent further decrease of food self-sufficiency ratio, which is mainly caused by the high reliance on imported feed grain. It is also considered that the calculation and presentation methods of standard agricultural income needs to be improved. The current calculation method uses unit land area of 10a regardless of crop kinds , characteristics of agricultural management and cultivation scale. So, it is apt to lead misunderstanding of farm income value. Therefore. it should show an income of average farmers for certain number of years. Research and developing system for food producing is not desirable because they are conducted currently individual crop and mono-culture basis. But actual agricultural income is usually earned by cropping system including upland and lowland. For example. the barley and wheat is usually cultivated in double cropping system. The cooperation among research institutes such as university agribusiness. government and farmers is indispensible. The public information and education on importance and consumption habit of food crops is necessary in Korean society to increase food self-sufficiency through nationwide cooperation.
