Measurement of Individuals' Emotional Stress Responses to Construction Noise through Analysis of Human Brain Waves

  • Construction noise is among the most critical stressors that adversely affect the quality of life of the people residing near construction sites. Many countries strictly regulate construction noise based on sound pressure levels, as well as timeslots and type of construction equipment. However, individuals react differently to noise, and their tolerance to noise levels varies, which should be considered when regulating construction noise. Although studies have attempted to analyze individuals' stress responses to construction noise, the lack of quantitative methods to measure stress has limited our understanding of individuals' stress responses to noise. Therefore, the authors proposed a quantitative stress measurement framework with a wearable electroencephalogram (EEG) sensor to decipher human brain wave patterns caused by diverse construction stressors (e.g., worksite hazards). This present study extends this framework to investigate the feasibility of using the wearable EEG sensor to measure individuals' emotional stress responses to construction noise in a laboratory setting. EEG data were collected from three subjects exposed to different construction noises (e.g., tonal vs. impulsive noises, different sound pressure levels) recorded at real construction sites. Simultaneously, the subjects' perceived stress levels against these noises were measured. The results indicate that the wearable EEG sensor can help understand diverse individuals' stress responses to nearby construction noises. This research provides a more quantitative means for measuring the impact of the noise generated at a construction site on neighboring communities, which can help frame more reasonable construction noise regulations that consider various types of residents in urban areas.

  • 지반내 존재하는 자연전위, 돌발성 전기잡음, 60Hz 전기잡음 등은 전기비저항 시험에 있어서 신뢰성을 저하하는 요인 중의 하나이다. 특히 최근 개발된 저주파 교류를 사용하는 PDC-R(Pseudo DC Resistivity) 시험의 자료해석에 있어서도 해석의 신뢰성을 저하시키는 요인이 되고 있다. 즉 직류기반 전기비저항 시험, 교류기반 전기비저항 시험 모두에 있어서 정도의 차이가 있을 뿐 전기잡음은 전기비저항 기법의 신뢰도에 여전히 영향을 주고 있다. 본 연구에서는 PDC-R 기법의 자료해석에 있어서 전기잡음의 영향을 최소화하여 기법의 신뢰성을 제고할 수 있는 방안을 제시하였다. 또한 이를 구현하는 자동화 알고리듬을 이용하여 PDC-R 기법의 적용성도 개선하도록 하였다. 본 연구에서 제안하는 PDC-R 시험데이터의 자동화 해석기법은 두 단계로 구성되어 있는데, 그 첫 번째는 다중필터링을 사용하여 입력전류와 동일한 주파수 성분을 추출하는 것이고, 두 번째 단계는 추출된 자료 중에서 안정적 거동의 신호성분만 분류해 내는 작업을 수행하는 것이다. 이러한 자동화 기법은 자연전위, 돌발성 잡음, 60Hz 전기잡음 등을 포함한 가상의 조화함수를 이용하여 그 정확성과 안정성을 확인하였다. 또한 현장적용을 통하여 제안된 기법의 적용성 및 정확성도 확인할 수 있었다.

멀티밴드필터에 의한 환경잡음억압 알고리즘 (Reduction Algorithm of Environmental Noise by Multi-band Filter)

  • 본 논문에서는 각 프레임에서의 음성신호 및 비음성신호 구간을 검출하는 음성인식 알고리즘을 제안한다. 그리고 음성신호 및 비음성신호 구간의 검출에 따라서 각 프레임에서 잡음을 제거하는 멀티밴드필터에 의한 환경잡음억압 알고리즘을 제안한다. 이 알고리즘은 음성으로부터 특징 파라미터를 추출하여 필터뱅크의 서브밴드 영역에서 잡음을 제거하는 방법이다. 본 실험에서는 환경잡음억압 알고리즘의 성능을 멀티밴드필터를 사용하여 각 프레임에서 잡음을 제거하는 실험결과를 나타낸다. 잡음에 의하여 오염된 음성에 대하여 스펙트럴 왜곡률을 사용하여 본 알고리즘이 유효하다는 것을 확인한다.

  • Groundroll is a coherent noise showing dispersive behavior in land seismic-reflection records and its rejection has been a stubborn problem in data processing because they severely degrade the continuities and resolution of reflection signals. Conventional processing schemes of attenuating noises are the kind of frequency filtering (i.e., bandpass and f-k) that uses the Fourier transform (FT) along the entire trace in the time domain. To suppress them in this study, 1D wavelet filtering (WT) that can control time-varying frequency properties is tested and performed in the land-based synthetic and field seismic data. The results are compared to the ones from conventional filtering techniques in terms of continuities and resolution of reflection events. This filtering technique enhanced the reflection events by effectively eliminating the dispersive groundroll and random noises with control of time-scale function on wavelet domain.

학교주변 도로교통 소음 및 그에 따른 학생 청감반응과의 상관관계 연구 (A Study on the correlation between the traffic noise around the school buildings and the students' response to it)

  • For my thesis I have analyzed the differences between the traffic noise level surrounding the schools and the perceived level of noise. 1 have used the ways of measurement and questionnaires to support my study. According to the analysis, the measured noise level was higher than the expected noise level. The equivalent noise level was proven to be higher when the windows of the classrooms were open. The noise level was also higher on the third floor than the first floor. The correlation between the measured noise level and the perceived level of noise was tested in each school. The school which had a higher expected noise level showed a high perceived level of noise. The measured noise level and the perceived level of noise became larger on the higher floors. Through the questionnaires, the traffic noises were proven to be the largest noise-making source surrounding the schools. Most of the students replied on the questionnaires that they have been consistently bothered by the noise. It interfered with their studies and concentration. Also, the sound of their voices became louder because of the noise around their schools. Therefore, I have come to the conclusion that the traffic noises that surround the schools give the students negative influences.

  • In this paper, although Radar has been used for a long time, integrated scheme with visual camera is an efficient way to enhance marine surveillance system. Camera image is focused by radar information but it is easy to be fallen into inaccurate operation due to environmental noises. We have proposed a method to filter the noises by moving average filter and Kalman filter. It is proved that Kalman filtered results preserves linearity while the former includes larger variance.

고속도로 발생소음의 특성 분석 (Characteristics Analysis of Highway Traffic Noise)

  • Highway traffic noise is the one of the most frequent pollutant source of environmental claims in Korea for the last 10 years. For abating the noise from the highways, characteristics of highway noise source should be investigated and identified before performing the abatements. Highway noises are affected by traffic volume, vehicle types and speed, tyre and pavement types. In this study, highway noises which measured from different pavements have been analyzed and compared. Especially, the noise from the asphalt concrete pavement, cement concrete pavement and low-noise pavement have been measured simultaneously at the same traffic condition and compared each other. Hopefully, the data of the study may be used for abating highway noise and further studies.

자기위치 유지시스템 제어기의 설계변수에 관한 연구 (A Study on the Design Parameters of Controller for Dynamic Positioning System)

  • Special purpose vessels such as drillship and ocean research vessels install the DPS(Dynamic Positioning System) to maintain the position and heading for long-time operation. This paper deals with the design parameters for the control theory and filter algorithms of DP system. for the environmental loadings wind forces, current forces and wave forces were considered. In order to estimate the low frequency motions without first-order wave motion, the Kalman filter was used and it was assumed that the first-order wave forces correspond to system noises and first-order wave motions are measurement noises. In this simulation, the length of research vessel is 65 meters and it has four thrusters to maintain the position. The ability of keeping position and heading was confirmed. For the calculation of thruster input the LQR and LOI control theory were adopted and the effects of gain were investigated.

Recognition of Container Identifiers Using 8-directional Contour Tracking Method and Refined RBF Network

  • Generally, it is difficult to find constant patterns on identifiers in a container image, since the identifiers are not normalized in color, size, and position, etc. and their shapes are damaged by external environmental factors. This paper distinguishes identifier areas from background noises and removes noises by using an ART2-based quantization method and general morphological information on the identifiers such as color, size, ratio of height to width, and a distance from other identifiers. Individual identifier is extracted by applying the 8-directional contour tracking method to each identifier area. This paper proposes a refined ART2-based RBF network and applies it to the recognition of identifiers. Through experiments with 300 container images, the proposed algorithm showed more improved accuracy of recognizing container identifiers than the others proposed previously, in spite of using shorter training time.

  • The persence of distinct tones in environmental noises leads to an increasing anaoyance especially if the tones are of long duration. Before 1992 in Germany the tonal content of noises had to be subjectively estimated by the acoustic consultants and up to six dB could be added to the measured Leq depending on the tonality content of the noise under consideration. In order to give an objective basis for tonality estimated a DIN norm proposal for tonality evaluations was introduced in 1992. This proposal is compared with two different procedures : the prominece-ratio calculation which was proposed by Bienvenue and Nobile /4/ and the proposal of Ares /5/. The output of the three models is contrasted with subjective tonality judgements. It turns out that the prominence ratio model yields the best agreement with the subjective tonality assessments od the sound set chosen.
