In spite of its many strong points, pole-pole electrode configuration is not often used for ground electrical resistivity survey except for bore hole survey as normal logging and for archaeological investigation. Above all, poor spatial resolution of pole-pole survey may be responsible for this. But recent experiences so far gained by the present authers lead them to think that pole-pole survey can be at least a viable means of reconnaissance survey in near-surface conductive environment and an effective interpretational scheme may augment its resolution. As well known, a response of any other electrode configuration is a linear combination of pole-pole responses. Based on this principle of linear superposition and the principle of reciprocity, the other 'responses' can be derived with simple additions and subtractions of pole-pole responses. Though such responses are not always correct due to the adverse effects of noises, combined with the potential decay curves, they can be helpful to interprete better pole-pole survey data especially in connection of the resolution. This can be comparable to the use of the first or second derivatives of gravity and magnetic intensity surveys.

A voltage measuring system specified for the voltage fluctuation of the Pusan-Hamada submarine cable is developed by adding circuits of differential amplification and analog-to-digital conversion to a microprocessor-based data logger with a data modem. This system is charaterized by its small size. no power failure. fully unmanned operation. and precise instrumental drift correction. In addition to the cable voltage and current it measures an ambient temperature and a mercury cell voltage in order to calibrate temperature effect and check its long-term stability. The data acquired by this system show that the voltage signal. comprising fast random noises with a constant width of about 0.2V. fluctuates within a range of about 1V and the fluctuation frequency is similar to that of tidal motion. The source voltage of power feeding equipment (PFE) for the cable system seems to be affected when the room temperature changes rapidly.
Real-Time Hybrid Simulation (RTHS) is a novel approach conceived to evaluate dynamic responses of structures with parts of a structure physically tested and the remainder parts numerically modelled. In RTHS, delay estimation is often a precondition of compensation; nonetheless, system delay may vary during testing. Consequently, it is sometimes necessary to measure delay online. Along these lines, this paper proposes an online delay estimation method using least-squares algorithm based on a simplified physical system model, i.e., a pure delay multiplied by a gain reflecting amplitude errors of physical system control. Advantages and disadvantages of different delay estimation methods based on this simplified model are firstly discussed. Subsequently, it introduces the least-squares algorithm in order to render the estimator based on Taylor series more practical yet effective. As a result, relevant parameter choice results to be quite easy. Finally in order to verify performance of the proposed method, numerical simulations and RTHS with a buckling-restrained brace specimen are carried out. Relevant results show that the proposed technique is endowed with good convergence speed and accuracy, even when measurement noises and amplitude errors of actuator control are present.
We have investigated the optimum combination of the environmental noise condition and type of SQUID pickup coil in order to obtain maximum signal-to-noise ratio (SNR). The measurement probe consists of 1st order gradiometer with pickup coils of 100 mm, 70 mm, and 50 mm baseline length, a 2nd order gradiometer with 50 mm baseline, and a magnetometer. The pickup coils are fabricated by winding Nb wire on a bobbin with 200 mm diameter. Noise and heart signal of a healthy male were measured by various SQUID sensors with different types of pickup coils in various magnetically shielded rooms (MSR), and compared to each other. The shielding factors were found to be 43 dB, 35 dB and 25 dB at 0.1 Hz for MSR-AS, MSR-BS, MSR-CS, respectively. White noises were $3.5\;fT/Hz^{1/2}$, $4.5\;fT/Hz^{1/2}$ and $3\;fT/Hz^{1/2}$ for the 1st order gradiometers, the 2nd order gradiometers, and magnetometer for all MSRs. SNR of the magnetometer was up to 56 dB in MSR-AS, while the 1st order axial gradiometer with 70 mm baseline length was up to 54 dB in MSR-BS. The 2nd order axial gradiometer with 50 mm baseline length of pickup coil was found to be up to 40 dB in MSR-CS.
Building demolitions at urban area make some inconvenience to neighborhood through generating noises, ground vibrations, and dusts. For this reason, various methods to control such environmental impacts have been being designed and practiced. Among the methods, the use of explosive demolition is rapidly increasing because it can minimize the inconveniency as well as decrease the working time and cost. In this respect, the old Sung-Nam city hall, which was a Rahmen structure comprised of beams, slabs and columns, was decided to be demolished by explosive demolition. This paper shows that explosive demolition can be the most suitable way of removing old buildings eco-friendly, safely, and economically by showing the observation results obtained from the actual demolition operation for the Sung-Nam city hall.

Recently, there has been a growing global interest in environmental conservation, and the field of electric power equipment has been working to become more environment-friendly. Accordingly, the low noise cooling fan of power transformers was developed through the improvement of blade shape. These are expected to apply to existing power transformers and low noise transformers. It is essential for low noise fan to possess good cooling performance as well as low audible noises. But, there was not analysis on the audible noise level and the cooling performance for low noise cooling fans until present. In this paper, we measure the audible noise level and the flow rate of low noise cooling fans to inspect the performance, Also, we confirmed that the low noise cooling fan is available to apply to power transformers through temperature rise tests of power transformers.
There are various ways to monitor active volcanoes, such as the method of observing the activity of a volcano with the naked eye, the method of referring to the past eruptive history based on the historic records and the method of monitoring volcanoes by using observation equipment. The most basic method from the observation equipment-using methods to monitor volcanoes is seismic monitoring. In addition to this, the ways to monitor volcanoes are as follows: resonance observation which may be effective to remove artificial noises from the seismic activities that are recorded in the seismograph, ground deformation by using precision leveling, electronic distance measurement, tiltmeter, GPS, and InSAR observation method, volcanic gas monitoring, hydrologic and meteorological monitoring, and other geophysical monitoring methods. These monitoring methods can make volcanic activities effectively monitored, determine the behavior of magmas in magma chambers and help predict the future volcanic eruptions more accurately and early warning, thus, minimize and mitigate the damage of volcanic hazards.
This paper describes the development and evaluation of a Korean address input system employing automatic speech recognition technique as user interface for input Korean address. Address consists of cities, provinces and counties. The system works on a window 95 environment of personal computer with built-in soundcard. In the speech recognition part, the Continuous density Hidden Markov Model(CHMM) for making phoneme like units(PLUs) and One Pass Dynamic Programming(OPDP) algorithm is used for recognition. For address recognition, Finite State Automata(FSA) suitable for Korean address structure is constructed. To achieve an acceptable performance against the variation of speakers, microphones, and environmental noises, Maximum a posteriori(MAP) estimation is implemented in adaptation. And to improve the recognition speed, fast search method using variable pruning threshold is newly proposed. In the evaluation tests conducted for the 100 connected words uttered by 3 males the system showed above average 96.0% of recognition accuracy for connected words after adaption and recognition speed within 2 seconds, showing the effectiveness of the system.
Lamb waves have been a promising candidate for quantitative damage identification for various engineering structures, taking advantage of their superb capabilities of traveling for long distances with fast propagation and low attenuation. However, the application of Lamb waves in damage identification so far has been hampered by the fact that the characteristic signals associated with defects are generally weaker compared with those arising from boundary reflections, mode conversions and environmental noises, making it a tough task to achieve satisfactory damage identification from the time series. With awareness of this challenge, this paper proposes a time reversal-based technique to enhance the strength of damage-scattered signals, which has been previously applied to bulk wave-based damage detection successfully. The investigation includes (i) an analysis of Lamb wave propagation in a plate, generated by PZT patches mounted on the structure; (ii) an introduction of the time reversal theory dedicated for waveform reconstruction with a narrow-band input; (iii) a process of enhancing damage-scattered signals based on time reversal focalization; and (iv) the experimental investigation of the proposed approach to enhance the damage identification on a composite plate. The results have demonstrated that signals scattered by delamination in the composite plate can be enhanced remarkably with the assistance of the proposed process, benefiting from which the damage in the plate is identified with ease and high precision.

Active window system which can reduce the environmental noises, such as traffic noise and construction noise, from an open window into a room was proposed in the previous works. The key idea of the proposed active window system was that the control sources are approximately collocated with the primary noise source in terms of the acoustic power for global noise reduction throughout the interior room. Moreover, because it is important not to intrude into the living space in the building environment, no error sensors were used and an open-loop control method using control sources at the window frame and the reference sensors outside the room was used for the proposed system. The open-loop control gain was calculated by the interior room model assumed as the semi-infinite space, and the interior sound field was estimated by Rayleigh integral equation under the baffled window model assumption. However, windows with a finite thickness should were considered for the calculation of the open-loop control gain of the active window system since these are representative of most window cases. Therefore, the finite thickness window model based on the Sgard's model was derived and the open-loop control gain using the interior sound field estimated by that model was calculated for active window system. To compare the performance of these two models, a scale-model experiment was performed in an anechoic chamber according to noise source directions. Experimental results showed that the performance for the thickness window model is better than the baffled window model as the angle with respect to the perpendicular direction is larger.
