  • Three species of Chenopodiaceae, i.e. Suaeda japonica, Salicomia herbacea, Beta vulgaris var. cicla, were investigated to compare the physiological characteristics through inoic balances and osmoregulations under different environmental salt gradients. Plats were harvested in two weeks from treatments with salt gradients (0, 50, 100, 200 and 400 mM NaCl) and mineral nutrition gradients(1/1, 1/5, 1/10 dilutions of Hoagland solution). Plants were analyzed for growth responses, ionic balances, osmolalities, conductivities, glycinebetaine and proline contents quantitatively. Three plants of Chenopodiaceae accumulated slats into tissues unlike some salt sensitive species, and showed unique adaptation patterns to overcome saline environments, i.e. strong growth stimulation for Salicomia herbacea, growth negative tolerance for Suaeda japonica, and growth positive tolerance for Beta vulgaris var. cicla. The absorption of inorganic Ca/sup 2+/ ions was inhibited remarkably due to the excess uptake of Na+ with increasing salinity. The K+ content in plants was significantly reduced with increasing salinity. Total nitrogen content was reduced as mineral nutritions and salinity increased. Conductivity and osmolality increased with increasing salinity regardless of mineral nutritions. The ranges of glycinebetaine and proline contents were 0.2∼2.5 μM/g plant water and 0.1∼0.6μM/g plant water, respectively.

  • Many plant species have two modes of reproduction: sexual and asexual. Both modes of reproduction have often been viewed as adaptations to temporally or spatially variable environments. The plant should adjust partitioning to match changes in the estimated success of the two reproductive modes. Perennial plants showed that favorable habitats in soil nutrients or water content tend to promote clonal growth over sexual reproduction. In contrast, under high light-quantity conditions, clonal plants tend to allocate more biomass to sexual reproduction and less to clonal propagation. On the other hand, plants with chasmogamous and cleistogamous flowers provides with a greater tendency of the opportunity to ensure some seed set in any stressful environmental conditions such as low light, low soil nutrients, or low soil moisture. It is considered that vegetative reproduction has high competitive ability and is the major means to expand established population of perennial plants, whereas cleistogamous reproduction is insurance to persist in stressful sites due to being strong. Chasmogamous reproduction mainly enhances established and new population. Therefore, the functions of sexual and asexual propagules of perennial or annual plants differ from each other. These traits of propagule thus determine its success at a particular region of any environmental gradients. Eventually, if environmental resources or stress levels change in either space or time, species composition will probably also change. The reason based on which the plants differ with respect to favored reproduction modes in each environmental condition, may be involved in their specific realized niche.

  • The distribution of beech species (Fagus) and beech-dominated forests along climatic gradients in the Northern Hemisphere was studied by use of taxonomic and ecological literature. The genus Fagus as a whole occurs over the range of 4.5 to 20.0。C mean annual temperature and 600 to 1000 mm in lower limit, mean annual precipitation. At the higher end of the temperature range, beech occurs in zones with relatively high growing-season precipitation. Edaphically, beech species and beech-dominated forests tend to occur on mesic, moderately fertile sites. Beech-dominated forests occur in a limited portion of the climatic range of the genus with sensitive responses to other environmental factors. The distributional range of beech-dominated forests on a global scale depends more on climatic factors and geological events than on soil conditions or other factors, summarizing the facts obtained by many researchers on beech dominated forests.

  • This paper is concerned with the optimal seismic design of added viscous dampers in yielding plane frames. The total added damping is minimized for allowable values of local performance indices under the excitation of an ensemble of ground motions in both regular and irregular structures. The local performance indices are taken as the maximal inter-story drift of each story and/or the normalized hysteretic energy dissipated at each of the plastic hinges. Gradients of the constraints with respect to the design variables (damping coefficients) are derived, via optimal control theory, to enable an efficient first order optimization scheme to be used for the solution of the problem. An example of a ten story three bay frame is presented. This example reveals the following 'fully stressed characteristics' of the optimal solution: damping is assigned only to stories for which the local performance index has reached the allowable value. This may enable the application of efficient and practical analysis/redesign type methods for the optimal design of viscous dampers in yielding plane frames.

  • To study temperature effect of P.C. box girder bridge, field measurement was performed for six months, along with thermal analysis for the newly constructed viaduct of Gangbyun Highway in Seoul. Thermocouples were installed inside and surface of the flange and web of the box and temperature of box section md ambient temperature was measured. Measured environmental data are incorporated in finite element thermal analysis and computed temperature of the section was compared with measured one. Temperature gradient from thermal analysis was compared with Korean Highway Specification(1996)and the New Zealand Ministry of Works and Development code(1976). Thermal stress distribution across the box section was also compared.

  • Twenty-two forest stands and one hundred and fourteen plant species were ordinated by a reciprocal averaging(RA) method to extract the major forest patterns of the Quercus forests in Mts. Wolak, choryong, Juhul and Bohyun. The RA stand ordination on the first and second axes revealed a gradient of vegetation. It is the gradient from the Quercus mongolica-dominated forest to the Quercus serrata-dominated forest or Quercus variabilis-dominated forest. An intermediate zone between the two forest types was recognized by the RA stand ordination. Especially the zone on Mt. Bohyun was evidently higher than those of the other mountains. The gradient also showed the environmental one from mesic to xeric habitats and from higher to lower altitudes. The RA species ordination showed the distribution center of each species in the above mentioned patterns of the forest vegetation.

  • The maximum relative growth rate of algae treated with Zinc was shown as follows: 15, 8, 6, 3 and -5% per day for the rather sensitive Chlorella sp. populations, or 14, 7, 5 and 4% per day for the Pleurococcus sp. populations, and 22, 20, 13, 9 and 7% per day for the more resistant Scenedesmus spinosus populations, respectively for the culture medium with 0, 1, 5, 10 and 20 ppm of Zinc treatment. With mixed cultures of Chlorella sp. and Scenedesmus spinosus populations, the growth of the Chlorella sp. population overcame that of the S. spinomsus population from the cultures treated with relatively low concentration of Zinc. On the contrary, the population growth of the latter resistant species overcame that of the former sensitive species when the concentration of Zinc was above 5 ppm Zn of the medium. This paper describes the results of further investigations of the effects evaluated by direct cell counts method, optical density comparisons, oxygen production and consumption determinations and the measurements of the fate of Zinc treated in the solutions.

  • We conducted a year-long survey in 2000 to examine seasonal fluctuations in the abundance of the demersal copepod Pseudodiaptomus sp., the dominant copepod in the Seomjin River estuary, where the spring tide strongly affects changes in salinity gradients. Pseudodiaptomus sp. was found throughout the year in the entire range of salinities measured, but most individuals appeared at oligohaline conditions below 5.0 psu, and less than $2\%$ were observed in polyhaline conditions above 18.0 psu. The peak abundance occurred during autumn in oligohaline waters, and the density was relatively low during the rainy season in summer. In spring and autumn, copepodites were most abundant in oligohaline waters, although they were also fairly abundant in mesohaline conditions $(5\~18\;psu)$. Females with egg sacs appeared in oligo- and mesohaline waters during spring and autumn but were seldom found in polyhaline conditions throughout the year. Our results indicate that, despite the strong physical influence of the tide, Pseudodiaptomus sp. can manipulate its position to remain at its preferred salinity. We also found that spawning mainly occurred in oligohaline waters twice a year.
