Strategic Prospects of Environmental Restoration of Stream Side in Japan(I) (일본(日本)에서 한류변(漢流邊)의 환경부원(環境復元) 발전전략(發展戰略)(I))

  • This study was carried out to introduce current status and development strategy for an environmental restoration of stream side in Japan, and to consider a methodology which could be effectively applied for the environmental restoration of stream side in Korea. Since the end of 20th century, the native ecology and landscape of Japan remained only a limited areas such as stream side, water side and forest areas. Therefore, recently the works of forest conservation and erosion control of environmental restoration on stream side tended to increased. The strategic prospects of environmental restoration in Japan were summarized as follows : 1. From the ecological point of view, we have to develop a certain method and technology in construction of forest conservation and erosion control to prevent environmental problem from erosion control works. 2. We have to restore not only a continuity of stream side forest from a primitive area to an estuary but also the stream side forest to preserve and restore a stream side vegetation on a primitive watershed areas. 3. We have to improve a method of construction or removal of a structure which were constructed in the stream to restore a water side environment and an interaction system for an integration on a forest land, stream, and erosion control. Additionally, we have to establish an integrated evaluation method and an enforcement system after investigation of influences on natural environment, stream, and forest etc. 4. We have to conduct an integrated research to investigate the ecosystem of stream side, and construct environmentally friendly water park and erosion control park which considered natural environment and its landscape. Additionally, we need to introduce and adopt a natural style stream construction method to restore a water side areas.

Effects of Lignocellulosic Growing Media to The Prevention of Forest Soil Erosion

  • The forest slopes cause substantial local changes in soil properties and an increase in soil erosion after extreme rainstorms. The high soil erosion rates on forest slopes need the effective use of growing media to control the soil runoff. Therefore, we prepared six different lignocellulosic growing media such as peat, perlite, and wood meal as the base materials and carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC), glucomannan, starch, old corrugated containerboard, and computer printout as the additional materials for the prevention of simulated rainfall-induced runoff. The growing media containing old corrugated containerboard efficiently reduced the percentage of soil runoff; however, it could not completely cushion the influence of crust. The best results for plant growth, except in the leaf area, were also obtained with the growing media containing old corrugated containerboard, suggesting an interesting way of paper recycling and an economic benefit for plant or crop growth in forest slope.

Enzymatic Hydrolysate from Non-pretreated Biomass of Yellow Poplar (Liriodendron tulipifera) is an Alternative Resource for Bioethanol Production

  • Enzymatic hydrolysate from non pre-treated biomass of yellow poplar (Liriodendron tulipifera) was prepared and used as resource for bioethanol production. Fresh branch (1 year old) of yellow poplar biomass was found to be a good resource for achieving high saccharification yields and bioethanol production. Chemical composition of yellow poplar varied significantly depending upon age of tree. Cellulose content in fresh branch and log (12 years old) of yellow poplar was 44.7 and 46.7% respectively. Enzymatic hydrolysis of raw biomass was carried out with commercial enzymes. Fresh branch of yellow poplar hydrolyzed more easily than log of yellow poplar tree. After 72 h of enzyme treatment the glucose concentration from Fresh branch of yellow poplar was 1.46 g/L and for the same treatment period log of yellow poplar produced 1.23 g/L of glucose. Saccharomyces cerevisiae KCTC 7296 fermented the enzyme hydrolysate to ethanol, however ethanol production was similar (~1.4 g/L) from both fresh branch and log yellow poplar hydrolysates after 96 h.

Value Chain Optimization in Timber Supply Chain: Case Study in Gangwon-do

  • This study investigates to identify the impact factors of timber production cost on the relationship between production cost components and revenues generated by evaluating the entire timber supply chain. In this research, selected 13 logging zones as target areas and classified 14 forest production cost factors, six groups. Additionally, established 13 externalenvironmental factors with related stakeholders and forestry experts. And the BCR (Benefit Cost Ratio) method was then used to analyze the economics of each zone. Filled up a checklist and rated using 5 point scale for each target region, and extracted major cost factors for the production economy of the item. The analysis of major cost factors in the timber production revealed that wood grab equipment usage fee was the first ranked and forest trees purchase cost was ranked in the $2^{nd}$Also, the $3^{rd}$ranking was logging expenses, and transport cost, which accounted for 84% of the total cost, was ranked in the $4^{th}$. In addition, the rock land ratio, slope, timber payment (forest trees purchase cost), special timber, ratio of timber, DBH (Diameter at Breast Height), and mixed forest ratio were the factors that most affected the timber supply chain cost.

Qualitative Anatomical Characteristics of Compression Wood, Lateral Wood, and Opposite Wood in a Stem of Ginkgo biloba L.

  • This study was conducted to understand and to compare the qualitative aspects of anatomical characteristics in compression wood (CW), lateral wood (LW), and opposite wood (OW) in a stem of Ginkgo biloba. The qualitative analysis was examined by optical microscopy and scanning electron microscopy. CW in Ginkgo biloba disks were dark brown in color, and the OW and LW were light brown in color. CW and OW showed abrupt transitions from earlywood to latewood, while LW showed a gradual transition. Cross sections of CW presented circular tracheids with angular outlines, many intercellular spaces, and varying sizes of lumens. Cross sections of LW and OW showed rectangular tracheids, fewer intercellular spaces, and varying sizes of lumens. In radial sections, CW showed an irregular arrangement of tracheids in earlywood, while LW and OW showed comparatively regular arrangements. Slit-like bordered pits on the tracheid cell wall, piceoid pits in the crossfield, and a few spiral checks were present in CW. LW and OW showed bordered pits with slightly oval-shaped apertures, as well as cuppresoid pits in the crossfields. Rays were primarily uniseriate, with few biseriate rays in the tangential sections of CW, LW, and OW. The tips of the tracheids were branched in CW but had a normal appearance in LW and OW.

Estimate Site Index Equations for Pinus densiflora Based on Soil Factors in Gyeonggi Province

  • Site index is the essential tool for forest management to estimate the productivity of forest land Generally, site index equation is developed and used by relationship between stand age and dominant tree heights. However, there is a limit to use the site index equation in the application of variable ages, environmental influence, and estimation of site index for unstocked land. Therefore, it was attempted to develop a new site index equations based on various environmental factors including site and topographical variables. This study was conducted to develop regional site index equations based on the relationship between site index and soil factors for Pinus densiflora. Environmental factors that obtained from GIS application, were selected by stepwise-regression. Site index Equation was estimated by multiple regression from selected factors. Four environmental factors were selected in the final site index equations by stepwise regression. It was observed that coefficients of determination for site index equations were ranged from 0.34 which seem to be relatively low but good enough for estimation of forest stand productivity. The site index equations developed in this study were also verified to be useful by three evaluation statistics such as model's estimation bias, model's precision and mean square error type of measure.

A Review of Implementation of Policy Instruments on Forests Fire in Nepal

  • Forest fire is one of the major disasters occurring in Nepal causing huge loss to the ecosystem, people and economy. They are mainly caused due to different anthropogenic activities. In Nepal, the forest fires occur during the dry season mainly from March to May. Nepal has roughly 29.5 percent forest area that are prone to forest fires and it is estimated that about 375 thousand hectares of forest were burned over one and half decade from 2000-2014. The forest fire risk is higher in the Terai and Siwalik regions than in any other region. To prevent and mitigate the forests fire incidences, the Government of Nepal has formulated and executed different policy instruments. In this regard, this paper aims to review the implementation of policies, strategies, Acts and regulations related to forest fire management at different levels of governance. Although federal and provincial governments' different policy instruments have considered forest fire and its management, these are not effectively implemented. It is not prioritized in terms of resource allocation, institutional capacity building, disaster preparedness and early warning. In addition, there are unclear and overlapping roles and responsibilities among three tiers of governments to effectively implement the policy provisions. Considering the consequences of the forest fire, governments at different levels need to devise an effective mechanism involving all stakeholders for implementing preventive and curative activities, strengthen institutions and build the capacity of human resources, and increase the level of resource allocation to implement the provisions of various legal and policy instruments.

Analysis of Spatial Patterns and Estimation of Carbon Emissions in Deforestation using GIS and Administrative Data (GIS와 행정정보를 이용한 교토의정서 제3조 3항 산림전용지의 공간패턴 및 탄소배출량 분석)

  • This study purposed to analyze the spatial pattern and the amount of carbon emission at the deforestation area in Gangwondo. Forest geographic information system(FGIS) and administrative data were used in the analysis. The area size and spatial patterns of deforestation area were analyzed according to the article 3.3 of Kyoto protocol. Forest administration data for 9 years from 2000 to 2008 were entered into a database. Fifty-nine percent of deforestation area was found within 200m of the road network, and seventy-five percent of the area was found within 500m. Theoretical carbon emission based on deforestation area was estimated at 6,968tc. Carbon emission of national forest was 5.7times higher than that of private forest.

  • We studied the resistance of Cenococcum geophilum and Suillus granulatus isolates to NaCl during growth under axenic culture conditions. C. geophilum isolates displayed variations in NaCl resistance; mycelial growth of most isolates was inhibited above 200mM. All isolates of S. granulatus were tolerant to high NaCl content.
