  • The effect of consumers' environmental conservation behavior on the purchase of pro-environmental and used products. This study utilized a representative, large data sample to determine consumers' environmental conservation behavior, and purchase of pro-environmental and used products. Differences in these behavioral traits were investigated by socio-demographic variables. In addition, this study investigated the effect of consumers' environmental conservation behavior on the purchase of pro-environmental and used product. The major result were as follows. First, the level of consumers' environmental conservation behavior was low, and consumers did not buy pro-environmental and used products frequently. Second, unemployed married women, consumers with very low or high level of education and high income, consumers older than 40's, and consumers living in apartments showed lower levels of environmental conservation behavior. Third, consumers who were married, dissatisfied with their environmental living conditions, or irrational were more likely to buy pro-environmental products. Men, young, and rational consumers were more likely to buy used products. On the other hand, the level of environmental behavior did not influence the purchase of pro-environmental and used products. The high level of behavior for environmental conservation did not result the purchase of pro-environmental and used products.

  • The purpose of this study is to identify the level of children's consciousness and behavior for the environmental conservation, so that provides some fundamental information for the overcome of environmental crisis and reinforces a consumer education for the childrens at home. The subjects were randomly selected form the 4th, 5th, and 6th grade of elementary school students, in April, 1996, Seoul, Korea. The 1342 data obtained were analyzed by Mean, t-test, ANOVA, duncan's Multiple Rang Test, Pearson correlation, and Regression. The major findings were as follows: 1) The average level of children's consciousness for the environmental conservation was relatively low, which was 1.79. There were significantly differences on the children's consciousness for the environmental conservation, according to student's grade level, housing type, parent's education, household income, and the level of consumer socialization. 2) The average level of children's behavior for the environmental conservation was low, which was 2.36. There significant differences on children's behavior of environmental conservation, according to student's sex, grade level, housing type, parent's education and occupation, household income, and consumer socialization. 3) There were significant relationships between children's consciousness and behavior for the environmental conservation. 4) The most influential variable for children's consciousness and behavior of the environmental conservation was consumer socialization. As we see above, this study concludes that consumer environmental education should be reinforced for the children in the home, so that they involved in the environmental activities and have an early experience.

  • In the sustainable waste management, the necessity of environmental education which improves acquisition of the knowledge, attitudes and values for the environment is being emphasized to help students make environmentally desirable decision and promote responsible environmental behavior. However, the environmental education in high schools, as a whole, would be susceptible to many problems caused by tile educational administration focusing only on the college entrance examination. Therefore, this study modifies and applies a program using four teaching/learning methods (Investigation study, Internet-based learning, Field work, Issue analysis study) which deals with the sustainable waste management as the learning subject for the environmental education, and tries to find its effects on the students' environmental sensitivity and environmental conservation behavior in high schools. The main results of this study are summarized as fellows. First, the waste management program had little influence on the environmental sensitivity of experimental groups, while it had positive effect on their improvement of the environmental conservation behavior. Second, there were little meaningful effect on general environmental conservation behavior, but there were some significant results to environmental conservation behavior related to the sustainable waste management. In addition, positive results were found in ecomanagement and consumerism, whereas there were no meaningful results about in persuasion and legal action, which were sub-domains of the waste management program. Among the waste management programs, the school waste investigation study had the most positive effect on the students' recognition and solution of environmental problems as well as improvement of environmental conservation behavior. The easiest one of the four teaching/learning methods was the Internet-based learning, while the most difficult one of them was the issue analysis study. Consequently, in order to achieve the goals of the environmental education in the academic field, there has to be selected the most suitable one of the teaching/learning methods and to be applied to the class, according to the detailed objectives and loaming contents for the environmental education.

  • The residential energy consumption is intimately related with lifestyle of consumers. Therefore, this research suggests the mechanism for the effects of consumer lifestyle on consumer behavior. Specifically, the mediators are imposed of cost perception, propensity for environmental protection and energy conservation-conscious. Also, the lifestyle is composed of the over-consumption, life-centric, life-satisfaction, conservation- conscious and conservation-active type. In results, there are positive relationship between the life-satisfaction, conservation-conscious and conservation-active lifestyle and the propensity for environmental protection, cost perception. Both the cost perception and the propensity for environmental protection are positively related with the conservation- conscious. And positive relationship are appeared between the conservation-conscious and the energy conservation behavior.

  • Recently, much of attention has been given to the role of values in pro-environmental behaviors. The reasons are that most of environmental pollution comes from the home-living and polluting behavior is motivated by the undesirable value pursuing self-interests. This study is designed to investigate the effect of values on environmental behaviors. The results of this study are as following: Homemakers' value structure had 'self-transcendence·conservation' value, 'self-enhancement·conservation' value and 'openness-to-change' value as value factors. And the homemakers thought of self-transcendence·conservation value as "most important" and self-enhancement·conservation value as "not important". Consequently, homemakers had a tendency to do more pro-environmental behaviors when they perceived self-transcendence·conservation value as "more important value", while they did less when they regarded self-enhancement·conservation value as "more important". Therefor self-transcendence·whereas self-enhancement·conservation value is a negative predictor. Especially, self-transcendence·conservation value had more influence on pro-environmental behaviors than self-enhancement·conservation value.

  • From the students' point of view, this study was carried out to find out barriers to environmental conservation practice of secondary school students. According to the questionare and interview with secondary school students on barriers to environmental conservation practice at home, school, society and fellow-relation conditions and in personal psychology, the following findings were resulted. The major barriers to environmental conservation practice are (1) not doing environmental conservation practice of parents, friends and neighborhood, (2) having no interest in environment and environmental problems, (3) dirty and laboriousness of environmental conservation practice, (4) lack of environmental equipments, (5) the shortage of chance and time for environmental conversation practice, (6) lack of the inducement for environmental conservaton from school, (7) little effects of individual environmental practice, (8) a busy life, (9) shortage of the voluntary courage to practice for environmental conservation, (10) lack of compensation on the environmental conservation practice, (11) anti-environmental behavior among friends, (12) urging on edcation of parents. Those barriers related with home, school, society and fellow-relation anti-environmental conditions hold back environmental conservation practice of secondary school students. Those barriers are divided into three closely correlated tipes, (1) unpleasant traits of environmental conservation practice such as cleaning, recycling were linked with personal psychology, (2) lack of the social interest and practice for environmental conservation were linked with personal psychology, (3) the social atmosphere to urge on education was linked with students' busy life and the shortage of chance and time for environmental conversation practice. According to the results, attractive environmental education programs, home environmental education, cooperative environmental conservation programs, and inducements for environmental conservation are reguired of secondary school students to promote environmental conservation practice.

  • This study was intended to develop the STS module regarding conservation of water resources, called "A Project for the Conservation of Water Resources". Since each theme consisted of 2 subject activities, they had total 8 subject activities. Developed STS module was applied to 113 male students of 11th grader of D High School in Incheon. After they received 8 periods of the developed STS module, the environmental sensitivity and environmental conservation behavior and the interest of the affective domains related to science were determined. Results were as follows; Four themes of this module were 'What are the water resources?', 'What is a main cause for the water pollution?', 'A drinking water? or non-drinking water?' and 'Making UCC for the water resources'. Since each theme consisted of 2 subject activities, they were for total 8 periods. Developed STS module was found to be appropriate for the STS and they could be applied to the classroom easily. Students who were instructed according to the developed STS module showed that there was a statistically significant enhancement in the environmental sensitivity and environmental conservation behavior and in the area of interest of the affective domains related to science. Students who were instructed according to the developed STS module showed positive responses to the instructional methods by STS. Based on students' interview, they revealed that they were impressed with the hands-on activities and the process of subject activities. Instruction with STS module seemed to be more appropriate way of teaching compared to the traditional way of teaching. However, it will be necessary to develop more modules or programs which could be linked from the elementary school level to the high school level and to use them consistently in order to maximize their effects.

  • The purpose of this study were to examine the disposal consciousness of foods waste and meal management behavior related to environmental conservation, and to find out the ways to improve the disposal of foods waste. Data were collected from questionaire with 786 housewives who live in Chonbuk area. About 45% of foods waste consisted of vegetables and fruits. The levels of cooking(use) and idsposal behavior among meal management behavior were relatively high, but food preparation(buy) score was low. These results suggested that menu planning before food preparation, and buying some cleaned and trimmed foods in the market should be recommennded to reduce the foods waste. The levels of meal management behavior did not show any significant associaations with disposal consciousness of foods waste but were positively correlated to environmental conciousness. It could be thought that the effort of government administration to reduce and reuse of foods waste is needed to improve the desirable disposal behavior of that, and the well programmed enviornmental education should be more required and practical than increase the environmental conciousness.
