  • In a knowledge-based information society, the technology in itself is one of the most valuable information and in common use as assets. Assessment of a technology depends on many factors such as the grade of technology, marketability, and the time of evaluation, which makes it much more difficult to perform than the other tangible properties. Ultimately, it should be extremely important to consider environmental aspect for technology assessment in order to cope voluntarily with the change of uncertain future toward highly reliable evaluation.

  • Clean Technology goes beyond Clean-UP (or "End of PiPe) Technologies to include Pollution prevention, waste minimisation, and cleaner production. However, the concept of Clean Technology goes deeper than changes in technology, to ways in which human needs can be satisfied sustainably. In other words, Clean Technology, concentrates on delivering a human benefit rather than making a product. Introducing cleaner technology may therefore involve new commercial relationships as well as new technological practices. In some economic sectors, this involves leasing or providing a service rather than selling a product. Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) is an important tool in Clean Technology. LCA involves determining all the resources used and all the wastes and emissions produced in providing the human benefit. Use of LCA ensures that improved environmental performance in one part of the Life Cycle is not achieved merely at the expense of more environmental damage elsewhere. Going beyond LCA, the concepts of Life Cycle Design and "metabolised" use of materials are approaches to obtain maximum benefit from materials as they pass through the human economy. "Closed-loop" use can be a component of clean technology. Looking beyond simple re-use and recycling, a material may pass through a "cascade of uses". typically a series of applications with progressively lower performance specifications. Closed-loop use necessarily involves a change in commercial practice, because the material or product must be recovered after use.

  • This study was conducted to provide basic knowledges of effective environmental control of patients with allergic rhinitis. From July to October 1995, 58 dust samples Were drawn from the bedrooms of patients with allergic rhinitis who were registerd at an allergy clinic of a hospital. Those samples were examined for the amount of house mite allergens & dusts. The data were analysed by using ANOVA and Pearson correiation coefficients. The results were as follows : 1. As for the amount of house mite allergens in terms of environmental factors, the amount of house mite allergens of using washing water temperature of bedding above than $55^{\circ}C$ was significantly lower than that of below $54^{\circ}C$. Other environmental factors such as type of house, area of bed room floor, bed in bedroom, bedroom cleaning by vacuum cleaner, days after bedding washing, relative humidity of bedroom were relate to the amount of house mite allergens. 2. As for the amount of dusts in terms of environmental factors, the amount of dusts of days of days after bedding washing more than 15 days was significantly lower than thant of less than 15days. Other environmental factors such as type of house, area of bedroom floor, bed in bedroom, bedroom cleaning by vacuum cleaner, was hing water taemperature of bedding, relative humidity of bedroom were not relate to the amount of dusts. 3. There was a significant positive correlation between the amount of house mite allergens and the amount of dusts. It may be conclusively said. the amount of dusts and house mite allergens were closely associated with the washing temperature and days after washing of bedding. Hence. intensive instruction for the methods of bedding washing was needs of the patients with allergic rhinitis.

  • In this study, performance and environmental characteristics of cyclone vacuum cleaners are analyzed and product improvement methods are investigated to minimize environmental effect of the cleaners using the result. A simplified LCA method is used to analyze environmental characteristics of the cyclone vacuum cleaners. Two cyclone vacuum cleaners with similar specifications are chosen for the experiment. Typical characteristics of cyclone vacuum cleaners such as energy consumption, suction force, noise and temperature are measured and compared. Most environmental effect was caused by the energy consumption in use phase of life cycle. Some ideas are created to reduce energy consumption of the vacuum cleaners in use phase like installing baffle, and methods to extend exchange period of filter. It is analyzed how recyclability rate of vacuum cleaners could be improved to reduce the environmental effect in whole life of the vacuum cleaners.

  • The Bupyeong Silver mine which is located approximately 35km west of Seoul is currently the leading silver producer in Korea. The deposits occur as stockwork deposits hosted in Jurassic pyroclastic rocks. Occurrences of ore deposits and mineral paragenesis suggest a division of mineralization into four stages: Stage I, deposition of iron oxide and base metal sulfides; Stage II, deposition of tin oxide and silverm inerals; stage III, deposition of native silver and other silver minerals; Stage IV, formation of pyrite bearing siderite veinlets, Silver minerals in ore are native silver, argentite, freibergite, pyrargyrite, canfieldite, polybasite, dyscrasite and Ag-Fe-S mineral. The most important silver mineral is native silver among them. Chemical composition of important silver minerals were determined by electron probe microanalyser. Assay, size and modal analyses for floatation products were carried out. In floatation products, relative proportion of native silver for total important silver minerals have following ranges: feed, 64.7 to 74.74 wt.%; A-cleaner concentrate, 80.58 to 98.79 wt.%; and final tailing, 28.12 to 72. 57 wt. %. Average degree of liberation for native silver in feed and A-cleaner concentrate are 60.49% and 77.57% respectively. Negative relationship can be recognized between native silver and argentite in their abundance and behavior in floatation precesses.

  • This study was conducted to evaluate the efficiency of indoor air cleaners and to inform how to select them correctly to the users. The efficiencies of removing suspended bacteria per hour were $64.3{\pm}13.1%$ for filter, wet, and complex type, respectively, which showed the complex type was the most efficient. The removal efficiencies of formaldehyde (HCHO) after two hours operation of air cleaners showed 88.3% and 81.1% for filter and wet type, respectively. The efficiency of complex type, with removal rate of 55.5~58.4%, was decreased after 30 minutes operation. Therefore, it is recommended to perform over 60 minutes when doing air cleaner certification test for HCHO removal efficiency. Generally, air cleaners having low wind volume showed higher efficiency. All tested air cleaners had no potential for removing of volatile organic compounds (VOCs), which is toxic substances, and it is desirable to develop a device which can control these substances. The results also confirmed that there was no ozone production from all tested air cleaners. And it is recommended to ventilate for 20 minutes every four hours to maintain 50% ventilation status.
