Analysis of interaction between river and groundwaterin Kurobe river fan by a grid-based hydrological model

  • The Kurobe river, which runs through eastern Toyama Prefecture is one of the most famous rivers for wild water because of its steep slope in the range from 1/5 to 1/120. This river forms an alluvial fan in the range up to 13 kilometers from the sea. In this region, significant seepage flow occurs and thus the stream sometimes been intermitted. Moreover, the amount of seepage flow seems to vary with the groundwater level of the region. To keep the river environment healthy for flora and fauna, especially to conserve good condition for spawning of fishes, an appropriate environmental flow should be maintained in the river. To achieve this target, controlling of the upstream reservoir has to be studied in depth. One of the major problems to decide the amount of water to be released from the reservoir to maintain the environmental flow is to estimate the amount of water leaked into the groundwater from the river. This phenomenon is affected by the river flow rate as well as the groundwater level in the alluvial fan and the conditions vary in space and time. Thus, a grid-based hydrological cycle analysis model NK-GHM has been applied to clarify the hydrological cycle componentsin this area including seepage/discharge from/to the river. The model was tested by comparing with river flow rate, groundwater levels and other observations and found that the model described those observations well. Consequently, the seepage from the Kurobe river was found significant but it was also found that the groundwater in this region has been preserved by the recharge from the irrigation water supply into paddy fields in the alluvial fan.

Nonlinear Interaction between the Permeable Submerged Breakwater and Third Order Stokes Waves (사석잠제와 Stokes 3차파와의 비선형간섭에 관한 연구)

  • Recently, the interests of the construction of the permeable submerged breakwaters have been increased to preserve and to improve the coastal environment, and to control the incident waves and littoral transport. It is very important to predict the wave transformation precisely over the permeable submerged breakwaters. This study discusses nonlinear wave transformation and characteristics by using BEM based on the frequency domain method of the 3rd-order Stokes waves. The Dupuit-Forchheimer formula is applied to the analysis of the fluid resistance of rubble stones, and the equation about equivalent linear frictional coefficient is newly modified based on the Lorentz's condition for the equivalent work. The numerical results are compared with the experimental ones for verification. These two results give a close agreement each other. It is confirmed that the present method of the 3rd-order Stokes waves estimates more precisely than that of the 2nd-order Stokes waves.

A Study on the Sediment Movement Using Numerical Models (수치모형을 이용한 하상변동 연구)

  • In this study, one and semi-two dimensional numerical models were applied to study on the hydraulic and sedimentologic characteristics of upstream and downstream channel section near the Buyeo intake towers. The HEC-6 model was applied for the simulation of one dimensional sediment movement from 1988 to 1996, and GSTARS model was applied for the simulation of semi-two dimensional sediment movement for the same period. After the verification of accuracy of HEC-6 and GSTARS models, the models were applied again to predict the sediment movement near intake towers from 1988 to 2001. In this case, measured channel section of 1988 was used as an initial channel condition, and used to predict the long-term variation of channel section of 2001 after 13 years since 1988. The simulation results show that the channel bed is sedimented and eroded repeatedly in the main channel of overall study area, and that channel bed is getting elevated in the near Buyeo intake towers.

  • This study is thing about eco-tourism activated Mt. Gede Pangrango National Park in Indonesia. Indonesia is full of eco-tourist resources with the possession of the tropical forest. Particularly, Gede Pangrango National Park on the west of Java island has so plenty of bio-diversity that the UNESCO designated this park as the World Biosphere Reserve. By virtue of this, various visitors all over the world are visiting Gede Pangrango Park for doing research, education, hiking and camping. However, Indonesia lags behind other countries in convenience facilities for visitors, so their visiting programs are actually insufficient. In order for eco-tourism to be revitalized, there should be physical improvement in visiting facilities, management of a variety of visit programs, and local residents' participation & projects to increase the income of local residents. This study is going to seek for the environment-friendly management plan suited for the properties of the park and improvement plan for eco-visiting facilities by closely grasping the actual condition of the eco-tourism of Gede Pangrango National Park.

Inhibitory Activity of Asarum sieboldii against Wood Rot Fungi on Traditional Paper, Hanji (한지에서 셀룰로오스 분해 미생물에 대한 세신 추출물의 저해 활성)

  • Background: To investigate the possibility of using Asarum sieboldii as an environment-friendly fumigant for protecting organic cultural heritages, the inhibitory effect of A. sieboldii extract against wood rot fungi on Hanji was examined. Methods and Results: The physical, optical, and morphological properties of Hanji inoculated with Trametes versicolor and Tyromyces palustris, and exposed to the n-hexane fraction of A. sieboldii extract, were measured. The physical properties were expressed as weight loss, zero-span tensile strength and viscosity and the optical properties were depicted by luminance and chromaticity ($L^*$, $a^*$, and $b^*$). The results showed that, the n-hexane fraction of A. sieboldii extract inhibited the growth of fungi on Hanji, and preserved its condition. At a concentration of 25 mg, the n-hexane fraction of A. sieboldii extract maintained zero-span tensile strength, increased viscosity, and restricted discoloration of Hanji. It also was confirmed that the weight of fungi infested Hanji exposed to the extract did not decrease. Scanning electron microscopic images revealed that the spores and hyphae of T. versicolor and T. palustris were not present on Hanji during treatment with > 25 mg of the n-hexane fraction of A. sieboldii extract. Conclusions: These results indicate that the n-hexane fraction of A. sieboldii extract by virtue of its antifungal effectiveness may help in preserving Korean paper cultural heritages, including Hanji.

Functional Analysis of the High Affinity Phosphate Transporter Genes Derived from Oryza sativa in Arabidopsis thaliana. (애기장대에서의 벼 유래의 고친화성 인산 운반체 유전자들의 기능 분석)

  • Phosphate, a favorable phosphorous form for plant, is one of major nutrient elements for growth and development in plants. Plants exhibit various physiological and biochemical responses in reaction to phosphate starvation in order to maintain phosphate homeostasis. Of them, expression of high affinity phosphate transporter gene family and efficient uptake of phosphate via them is a major physiological process for adaption to phosphate deficient environment. Although the various genetic resources of high affinity phosphate transporter are identified recently, little is known about their functions in plant that is prerequisite information before applying to crop plants to generate valuable transgenic plants. We demonstrated that Arabidopsis transgenic plants over-expressing two different high affinity phosphate transporter gens, OsPT1 and OsPT7, derived from rice, exhibit better growth responses compared with wild-type under phosphate starvation condition. Specially, OsPT7 gene has proven to be more effective to generate Arabidopsis transgenic plant tolerant to phosphate deficiency than OsPT1. Furthermore, the expression level of AtPT1 gene that is one of reporter genes specifically induced by phosphate starvation was significantly low compared with wild-type during phosphate starvation. Taken together, these results collectively suggest that over expression of OsPTl and OsPT7 genes derived from monocotyledonous plant function efficiently in the dicotyledonous plant, relieving stress response caused by phosphate starvation and leading to better growth rate.

Accuracy evaluation of ZigBee's indoor localization algorithm (ZigBee 실내 위치 인식 알고리즘의 정확도 평가)

  • This paper applies Bayesian Markov inferred localization techniques for determining ZigBee mobile device's position. To evaluate its accuracy, we compare it with conventional technique, map-based localization. While the map-based localization technique referring to database of predefined locations and their RSSI data, the Bayesian Markov inferred localization is influenced by changes of time, direction and distance. All determinations are drawn from the estimation of Received Signal Strength (RSS) using ZigBee modules. Our results show the relationship between RSSI and distance in indoor ZigBee environment and higher localization accuracy of Bayesian Markov localization technique. We conclude that map-based localization is not suitable for flexible changes in indoors because of its predefined condition setup and lower accuracy comparing to distance-based Markov Chain inference localization system.

  • Device-to-Device (D2D) communication is a technology component for long-term evolution-advanced (LTE-A). In D2D communication, users in close proximity to each other can communicate directly without going through a base station; such direct communication can improve spectral efficiency. Although D2D communication brings improvement in spectral efficiency, it also causes interference to the cellular network as a result of spectrum sharing. In particularly, D2D communication can generate interference for each D2D pair when the common wireless medium in a co-located limited area is accessed. Even though the interference management for between the D2D pair and cellular networks has been proposed, the interference reducing methods have still not been fully studied for the D2D pairs. In this paper, we investigate the problem of D2D pair coexistence in which interference is considered between D2D pairs. Using a signal to interference model for a target D2D pair, we provide an analysis of the aggregated throughput of a dense D2D network. For a target D2D pair, we assume that the desired signal and interference signals obey multipath fading and shadow fading. Through analysis, we demonstrate the effect of cluster size such as the number of D2D pairs and the size of the considered area on the network performance. The analytical results are compared with computer simulations. Our work can be used for a rough guideline for controlling the system throughput in a dense D2D network environment.

Ecological Studies on the Asan Reservoir. 1. Physicochemical chracteristics and Trophic Status (아산호의 생태학적 연구 1.이화학적 특성과 영양상태)

  • To evaluate the eutrophication status of the Asan Reservoir in Korea, physicochemical parameters were analyzed for samples of 19 sampling stations collected in the period from March to November in 1997. Water temperature was in the range of $8.3{\sim}35.3{\circ}^C$, with thermocline appearing in summer. Dissolved oxygen also showed similar verticle variation to temperature. Secchi depth was very shallow with a range of 0.1~1m. Suspended solids ranged from 11.3 mg/1 to 2143.3 mg/1, and seemed to be affected by the amount of rainfall and the standing stocks of phytoplankton. Nutrient concentrations were higher in tributaries, and decreased with downflow. Nutrients were low in the summer and early autumn when algal blooms occur, and high in the early spring and winter. The Trophic State Index showed that the Asan Reservoir is in a hypertrophic condition.

The Life History and Morphological Changes of Daphnia (D. pulex and D. galeata) Induced by the Larval Damselfly (Cercion sp.) and Fish (Micropterus salmoides) Kairomones (실잠자리 유충과 어류에서 분비된 카이로몬에 의한 물벼룩류의 생활사와 형태변화)

  • We investigated the predation behavior of larval damselfly on Daphnia pulex and D. galeata, and compared the life history and morphological defenses in two Daphnia species against larval damselfly and fish kairomones. Larval damselflies showed size-dependent predation behavior and preyed upon smaller daphnids easily regardless light condition. Overall, small D. galeata juveniles were more vulnerable than D. pulex to the larval damselfly predation. D. pulex displayed life history and morphological changes as the anti-predator defenses against larval damselfly as well as large mouth bass, while D. galeata showed the anti-predator defenses to the large mouth bass. Thus, our results revealed that two Daphnia species exhibits different anti-predator defense strategy to increase survivorship.
