In this study, the performance of five ejectors has been investigated with working fluids of water and water vapor. The diameters of nozzle and mixing tube of five ejectors were 1 and 1.5(ejector A), 1 and 2(ejector B), 1 and 2.5(ejector C), 1 and 3(ejector D), 2 and 4(ejector E) in millimeters. The length of the mixing tube was 8-10 times of its diameter. For each ejector, the ratio of mass flow rate of ejected water to that of entrained water vapor, $\mu$, was evaluated in terms of evaporator pressure, mass flow rate of ejected water, and water temperature. It was found that the performance of an ejector was not stable when the ratio of diameters was too small or too large(ejector A and D) and $\mu$ was almost the same for two ejectors with the same diameter ratio(ejector B and E). It was also found that $\mu$ increased almost linearly with an increase of evaporator pressure and the ratio $\mu$ increased as water temperature decreased. As expected, $\mu$ converged to zero as the water temperature approached the evaporator temperature. Finally, a non-dimensional correlation has been developed to predict$\mu$ terms of evaporator pressure and saturation pressure of ejected water.

According to the evaluation of basic properties and mechanical characteristics of polymer cement mortars that contain re-dispersible type polymer, in the case of fresh mortars, flow and air content were increased due to the dispersion action of entrained air and surfactant with an increase of polymer addition ratio. In the case of mortars after hardening, flexural strength, bonding strength, absorption rate and carbonation resistance were improved due to the increased union and waterproof characteristics of internal structures as a result of the formation of polymer film.

The numerical modeling of a coal gasification reaction occurring in an entrained flow coal gasifier is presented in this study. The purposes of this study are to develop a reliable evaluation method of coal gasifier not only for the basic design but also further system operation optimization using a CFD(Computational Fluid Dynamics) method. The coal gasification reaction consists of a series of reaction processes such as water evaporation, coal devolatilization, heterogeneous char reactions, and coal-off gaseous reaction in two-phase, turbulent and radiation participating media. Both numerical and experimental studies are made for the 1.0 ton/day entrained flow coal gasifier installed in the Korea Institute of Energy Research (KIER). The comprehensive computer program in this study is made basically using commercial CFD program by implementing several subroutines necessary for gasification process, which include Eddy-Breakup model together with the harmonic mean approach for turbulent reaction. Further Lagrangian approach in particle trajectory is adopted with the consideration of turbulent effect caused by the non-linearity of drag force, etc. The program developed is successfully evaluated against experimental data such as profiles of temperature and gaseous species concentration together with the cold gas efficiency. Further intensive investigation has been made in terms of the size distribution of pulverized coal particle, the slurry concentration, and the design parameters of gasifier. These parameters considered in this study are compared and evaluated each other through the calculated syngas production rate and cold gas efficiency, appearing to directly affect gasification performance. Considering the complexity of entrained coal gasification, even if the results of this study looks physically reasonable and consistent in parametric study, more efforts of elaborating modeling together with the systematic evaluation against experimental data are necessary for the development of an reliable design tool using CFD method.

Approx. 200,000 bpd vacuum residue oil is produced from oil refineries in Korea. These are supplying to use asphalt, high sulfur fuel oil, and upgrading at the residue hydro-desulfurization unit. Vacuum residue oil has high energy content, however high sulfur content and high concentration of heavy metals represent improper low grade fuel. To meet growing demand for effective utilization of vacuum residue oil from refineries, recently some of the oil refinery industries in Korea, such as SK oil refinery and LG Caltex refinery, have already proceeded feasibility study to construct 435-500 MWe IGCC power plant and hydrogen production facilities. Recently, KIER(Korea Institute of Energy Research) are studing on the Vacuum Residue gasification process using an oxygen-blown entrained-flow gasifier. The experiment runs were evaluated under the reaction temperature : 1,100~1,25$0^{\circ}C$, reaction pressure : 1~6kg/$\textrm{cm}^2$G, oxygen/V.R ratio : 0.8~0.9 and steam/V.R ratio : 0.4-0.5. Experimental results show the syngas composition(CO+H$_2$) : 85~93%, syngas flow rate : 50~110Mm$^3$/hr, heating value : 2,300~3,000 ㎉/Nm$^3$, carbon conversion : 65~92, cold gas efficiency : 60~70%. Also equilibrium modeling was used to predict the vacuum residue gasification process and the predicted values were compared reasonably well with experimental data.

In order to investigate the smoke movement in three dimensional room fires, the center fire, wall fire and corner fire plume in different sized fires were studied experimentally by rectangular pool fire using methanol as a fuel. As the fire size became larger for the center fires placed at the center of the floor, the air flow rate entrained through the opening, average hot layer temperature, flame angle deflected backwards and mean flame height was observed to increase. On the other hand, as the fire size became smaller, the neutral plane height in the door and time reached steady-state was observed to decrease. The average hot layer temperature, mean flame height and doorway neutral plane height obtained from comer fire were higher than those produced by wall fires and center fires. The simple model for describing the effect of walls on the mean flame height was presented. It was shown that the model provides a good description of the present measurements, when used with the assumption by Hansell(1993), that the increase of the average flame height is equal to the ratio of the open to the total perimeters of the trays. Also the two models for predicting the effects of walls on the mean flame height were presented. These models overestimated the measured values of the mean flame height above fuel trays close to a wall and in a corner by approximately 19-26%, respectively.
To investigate the characteristics of substitute natural gas (SNG) production from direct coal methanation, the continuous lab-scale entrained flow hydrogasifier (I.D. : 0.025 m, Height : 1.0 m) was used in this experiment. The hydrogasification system consisted of high pressure gas handling system, high pressure coal feeder, entrained flow hydrogasifier, and unreacted char separator. The experiment was performed at the various conditions of reaction temperature ($600{\sim}800^{\circ}C$), $H_2$/coal ratio (0.2~0.4), and coal feed rate (0.8~2.5 g/min). Although it was shown that carbon conversion was different trends with coals from the methanation results for 6 sample coals, the carbon conversion increased with increasing reaction temperature. And it increased with increasing H2/coal ratio, whereas the concentration of CH4 decreased. Also. the carbon conversion increased with the carbon content of coal sample and had a maximum value at volatile matter content of 35 wt%.

An experimental investigation on the structure and dynamic behavior of two dimensional over-expanded air jets exiting into water was carried out. The hish speed digital video imaging and static pressure distribution measurement were made to characterize the structure and time-dependant behavior of the jets. Mach number at the jet exit was 2.0 and was slightly less than the value predicted by the ideal nozzle calculation. Variance of jet spreading angle at different stagnation condition was measured as a function of mass flow rate. Periodic nature of the air jet distortion in water was observed and the frequency of the repetition was approximately 5-6 Hz for all cases tested. Three characteristic length scales were defined to characterize jet structure. $L_1$, maximum width of the plume when the periodic instability occurs, $L_2$, width of the jet where secondary reverse flow entrained jet flow and $L_3$, distance from the jet exit to the location where entrainment of the secondary reverse flow occurs. The ratio of $L_1$ and $L_2$ decreased with increasing stagnation pressure, i.e. mass flow rate. $L_3$ increased with increasing stagnation pressure. The temporal behavior of static pressure measurements also showed peak around frequency of 5, which corresponds the frequency obtained by visual measurements

High performance shotcrete has been recently researched partly as a result of high consensus on high strength and durability. However, they are very initial step compared from the advanced countries. For instance, they has been mainly on high strength or durability without any consideration on pumpability and shootability which are very crucial on workability. The purpose of this dissertation was to make a high performance wet-mix shotcrete (high workability) which would solve the general problems of wet-mix process in Korea. For this, the main experimental variables were selected to be silica fume(0.0, 4.5, 9%), air entrained agent(0.0, 0.005%). Rheology with IBB rheometer was measured for evaluating pumpability and shootability as well as pump pressure, rebound rate and build-up thickness. The conclusions from a series of experiments were as follow: The results of analyzing the effects of AE agent and silica fume on rheology indicated that AE agent reduced both of flow resistance(G) and torque viscosity(H) and silica fume increased flow resistance (G) and reduced torque viscosity(H). An increase in the value of torque viscosity(H) produces an increase in the requried pumping pressure. These result indicated that the reduction of torque would work better at improving pumpability. And an increase flow resistance(G) improved shootability(increase build-up thickness and reduce rebound).
An interpretation on the solid circulation characteristics in a fluidized-bed process has been carried out as a first step to simulate the dry entrained-bed absorption and bubbling-bed regeneration system for $CO_2$ removal from flue gas. A particle population balance has been developed to determine the solid flow rates and particle size distributions in the process. Effects of principal process parameters have been discussed in a laboratory scale process (absorption column: 25 mm i.d., 6 m in height; regeneration column: 0.1 m i.d., 1.2 m in height). The particle size distributions in absorption and regeneration columns were nearly the same. As gas velocity or static bed height in the absorption column increased, soild circulation rate and feed rate of fresh sorbent increased, however, mean particle diameter decreased in the absorption column. As cut diameter of the cyclone of the absorption column increased, solid circulation rate decreased, whereas feed rate of fresh sorbent and mean particle diameter in the absorption column increased. As attrition coefficient of sorbent particle increased, solid circulation rate and feed rate of fresh sorbent increased but mean particle diameter in the absorption column decreased.
